    True Bards are these Scottish men.this is just beyond magical.
    By far best male folk duo of all time their voices are from another world and from very deep place indeed.
    I hope all of Scotland are proud of these lads.
    The Corries forever! Scotland forever!
    Best regards from Ireland .

    Farewell to all our Scottish fame
    Farewell our ancient glory
    Farewell even to our Scottish name
    Sae fam'd in martial story
    Now Sark runs over the Solway sands
    And Tweed runs to the ocean
    To mark where England's province stands:
    Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
    What force Argyle could not subdue
    Through many warlike ages
    Is wrought now by a coward few
    For hireling traitor's wages
    The English steel we could disdain
    Secure in valour's station
    But English gold has been our bane:
    Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
    I would, or I had seen the day
    That treason thus could sell us
    My auld gray head had lain in clay
    Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
    But pith and power, till my last hour
    I'll make this declaration
    We were bought and sold for English gold:
    Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

    Never forget that Rabbie Burns was Anti-Union to the very bone...
    This rendition of Parcel O'Rogues is wonderfully moving.
    For those unfamiliar with the Scots Leid - here are the lyrics
    Fareweel tae a' oor Scottish fame,
    Fareweel oor ancient glory;
    Fareweel ev'n tae oor Scottish name,
    Sae fam'd in martial story.
    Noo Sark rins o'er Solway sands,
    An' Tweed rins tae the ocean,
    Tae mark whaur England's province stands-
    Such a parcel o' rogues in a nation!
    What force or guile could not subdue,
    Thro' many warlike ages,
    Is wrought now by a coward few,
    For hireling traitor's wages.
    The English steel we could disdain,
    Secure in valour's station;
    But English gold has been oor bane -
    Such a parcel o' rogues in a nation!
    O would, ere I had seen the day
    That Treason thus could sell us,
    My auld grey heid had lien in clay,
    Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
    But pith and power, till my last hour,
    I'll mak this declaration;
    We're bought and sold for English gold-
    Such a parcel o' rogues in a nation!

      Many ambitioys young Scotsmen from modest backgrounds joined the local masonic lodge on those days, to be fair. It was a way of networking. As a lowly tenant farmer, he maybe wouldn't have become a published writer without those connections.

    • @MDBellamy
      @MDBellamy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I fully understand what you say, but there will be no slum. Over decades and over centuries, Scots have found ways to reach a goal. I see no reason to disbelieve the endurance of this ability after independence,. Indeed the liberation and energy involved in liberty should guarantee prosperity. Perhaps not mansions for all, but neither should we fear slums. We can do better than that.

    So many comments have this song and its meaning wrong. Burns is referring to the 31 Members of the SCOTTISH Parliament who sold out to the English in 1707 with The Act Of Union. The " Rogues" received land, money, and other considerations" for their treachery. The Act Of Union ended Scotland's independence. Hence Burn's " a parcel of Rogues in the nation"

    That's just ridiculous. I'm both patriotic, and nationalistic. My country has been denied "nationhood" for the past 300+ years, and it has been my goal to help regain our nation since as far back as I can remember. That doesn't make me racist. It just means I am proud of my Scottish heritage, and believe my country is entitled to be called a nation, like most other countries in the world. We were annexed at a time when ordinary people had no say. Now they do, and we will be a nation again.

    Judging by a lot of the comments here, people are misunderstanding this song: the nation in question is Scotland, not England, and the rogues are the Scottish establishment. Burns wasn't blaming the English in any way, but the Scots who sold out to them. Like so many of Burns' works this is more socialist than nationalist.

    Alba and England had combined the crowns and had the same king in 1606 a but tensions arose when England wanted to appoint a Hanoverian Sophie to the throne while the Scots wanted a different king. England also relied heavily on Scottish soldiers to help her fight her wars,and was terrfied Scotland/Alba would align themselves with the French. Thusly Alba was tricked,bribed,bullied you name it into signing the Act Of The Union.

    Here in Canada we have a coterie of pro-American politicians and corporate heads who'd sell us out in a minute if given the chance to turn their coats. I love this song, but it was best sung by Joe MacFadden many years ago on Liam Clancy's TV show. He sang it with gusto and a bit of anger to the accompaniment of his Celts' whistles, pipes, concertinas and mandolins. You could picture a gathering of horseman converging for battle or a raid! Magic!

    I certainly hope you are right. I'm an American, and we've deteriorated so far that many of our so-called free elections are won by the person who spends the most money. It is this way for Scotland: Who cares what might lie under the North Sea? It is not important. What is important is this. Scotland has about five and half percent of the UK population, pays about 8 percent of the taxes, and gets about 4 percent of the benefits. Westminster makes a huge profit having Scotland in the UK, so they are prepared to spend a huge amount of money to keep that asset. Some have said that an independent Scotland does not make sense because it is too small. Look at the world. The countries that cause the most suffering in the world are all large. Small countries are the only kind that make sense. I hope that if the vote is Yes that I will be able to afford to emigrate. And aye, Alba gu brath.

      Independence yes. But not shackled to even bigger bunch of Bastards in Brussels. They will dictate to us all. Selling us to Brussels isn’t independence. Go and look at Scotland’s story. Picts, Scots, Ancient Britons, Norse, Danish, would any of those groups would sell us to Brussels?. Would Kenneth MacAlpine? Would the Kings of Dalraida before him? Would the Kings of Strathclyde? Would the Kings of Alba/ Pictland?. Would all those who fought The Norse?. Who fought the Angles?. Who fought the Norse? Who fought the Romans?. No I don’t think so?. Be independent. That doesn’t mean to hand my country over too Brussels and a European Empire formed by Surviving Nazis big names and Communists. It isn’t independence. It’s just your hatred of England. Yes Westminster can be pricks. But Brussels o my god what a bunch of wankers. Every Country in the EU isn’t happy about what is going on?. And the SNP want to hand my Country over too Brussels. Nicola Sturgeon.. by god I cannot stand the woman. Stand on your own two feet and I will support you. Hand us over too Brussels and by god I won’t. It’s not Independence that the SNP wish? If you look at what they wish to do isn’t Nationalist..it’s a branch of Communism. Be independent. Don’t hand Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 over to an Imperial Europe by God.

    I hope your compulsory history lessons in Scottish schools will include 'the massacre of Glencoe' also by the Corries, the massacre of Scotts by Scotts, and under the most shameful of circumstances. This is the legacy of folk songs, they cant be stopped, and they remember things, lots of things, so you will have to be very selective in which songs you use to educate your kids, so nothing will have changed.

    The Corries used to be three and made at least one LP as the Corrie Folk Trio and another as The Corrie Folk Trio with Paddie Bell. Just for your information, mate. That would be in the 1960's.
    Have a look at the Corries website.

    @kendosendo English is the dominant language because it was forced on the population of Scotland, The English made a concerted effort to rid Scotland of Scots and Gaelic. I would hope an independent Scotland would foster the Gaelic and Scots languages. Alba gu bràth is Gaelic for Scotland forever.

    evenly and thinly over the country then it isn't counted as far as seats go. That is why we had a referendum within the last year to see if people wanted to change it. The Lib Dems within the UK as a whole are handicapped with the current system. Labour within Scotland have normally benefited from it as their support tended to be concentrated in the industrial Lowlands giving them lots of seats - far more than their share of the vote.

    @Chomuno Before the act of the Union that submitted Alba to English dominion the "old" original Scottish Parliament had full control of all affairs across the country of Scotland then known as "The Kingdom Of Scotland" or in Gaelic "Rìoghachd na h-Alba".

    @kos Also in the 1950's (in my lifetime although I was very very young) the Queen was coronated yet the Scottish coronation she needed to undertake in Alba at the time was performed behind closed doors because the government at the time stated that "We don't want to acknowledge the fact Alba is a separate kingdom with their own traditions".

    @kos I in fact know a great deal about Scotlands hostory and it is an enduring myth that the Highlanders were the only one's who spoke Gaelic in Scotland. Gaelic was spoken from the Highlands of Scotland right down to Fife at one point being only replaced with Scots in the 17th century.

      It was spoken in Ayrshire up to the 18th century.
