To my beloved wife, gone three years now. I do my best to carry on our support of the four beautiful daughters you gave me and the now four wonderful Grandkids we have. To those who felt they had to dislike this I say, you have not lived enough to understand my friend.
Peace maker: your words are poignant and precious. Thank you for sharing them. you have inspired many and your wife lives through you and your children and grandchildren. Thank you
My mother loved the Corries. Gone coming up on 23 years now. Never fails to move me every time I hear them. Eddie Reader really does this song justice though
Hi folks, as a scot old enough to have lived through the years of school being taught about william pitt the junior and senior etc .The corries helped begin my education about being scottish and telling me about my celtic heritage. We were and will be again an independant nation.I hope to live along enought to see it. slainte
I remember to when we were forced to learn English history at school, like Scotland never existed. The Corries with their old ballads helped keep our history alive.
As a lad growing up in Montreal, Quebec 40 years ago, I was force fed the melodies of Scotland. It didn't register much then. Now I appreciate the TIMELESS quality of this music. These are the classics of the future. Thank you Robert Burns. I distinctly remember listening to the great Thomas L.Thomas who was not a Scot but a Welsh baritone singing the songs of Scotland. My old 33 RPM disc has seen better days. Does anyone know if this gem is available on CD or downloadable somewhere ?
Thank you for sharing :)i love The Corries they sing with such heart and soul for there beloved SCOTLAND my soul and heart feels there every words of such beauty for a home with such beauty the highlands ,valleys and glens and lochs i can not wait to come home to you Bonnie Scotland my soul and heart longs for your beauty and the feel of such a pure innocence i shall love you for all the days of my life xxx
fantastic, just listened to a few version of this song on youtube by other "artists". This is the only one that doesn't make my skin crawl with disgust. Absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!!
This song was written by Robert Burns after he bade farewell to his lover Mrs Agnes (Nancy) Maclehose. She left to rejoin her estranged husband in Jamaica. Burns never saw her again.....
fire side music/ the tunes - flickering flames/ warming cold night of loneliness/ What is cradled/ cradling?/ mother's arms/ find their trace/ they'll be with you/ at the end of the journey/fire side music/ what is cradled/ cradling?/ your soul. The Corries tunes accompany my journey from beginning to end.
Luvly! I've never heard this, despite having grown up on the Corries. I prefer this tune to the Rory Dall's Port one it's often sung to. It goes great on slide guitar!
Ae Fond Kiss BY ROBERT BURNS Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, and then forever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee. Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me; Dark despair around benights me. I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy, Naething could resist my Nancy; But to see her was to love her; Love but her, and love forever. Had we never lov'd sae kindly, Had we never lov'd sae blindly, Never met-or never parted- We had ne'er been broken-hearted. Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest! Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest! Thine be ilka joy and treasure, Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure! Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, alas, forever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!
Peter Dawson, we must be of a similar age. I can never forget "When Pitt the Younger camein to office ..... Pit the Elder etc. ad naseum". But the times have changed thank heavens. Saor Alba!
to gataflacha: I recentlly researched and learned a bunch of Burns' songs to do with my singing partner. It was the first time I ever encountered them with proper music, and I now regret a lifetime of having felt apathetic about them, having only read them as poems. Now I am a fervent fan!
I love this traditional application of the mandolin; it's a very different style of playing, compared to how one often hears mandolin in bluegrass or country music. Does anyone know the name of the larger stringed instrument? Is it a lute, or something else? Thank you.
It's funny how the quality varies in this BBC 1987 TV series. Some of the songs are ho-hum, how many times have we done this already, others are absolutely brilliant. This one is not so spectacular (though not bad), but Roy's singing of Loch Lomond, for example, is probably the best Corries video in existence, their crowning glory. Certainly not topped by anyone else and unlikely to be.
So you want to smack the Corry, Roy Williamson, when he spontaneously exclaims during the song? You can see him vocalize on this video around 0:17, not to mention that the voice is clearly on a microphone.
@RABENUTAM Sorry about the delay in responding as my private message said, yes i live in scotland and possibly just maybe ? I have travelled scotland a wee bitty more than yourself. Unfortunately bad weather stopped me from getting to st kilda but will compare any island with you !! Re braveheart a complete nonsense but hell a was there in glen nevis during filming as my sister only stayed less than a mile away.Scottish history bring it on.!!!!
peacemaker hope alls well and daughters are fine i,m ex cop and ambulance and see stuff i wish i never had enjoy your kids and family thais song is beutiful
@peteralba mate, i'm of the young ilk taught about the period between the wars, the tudors and anything nothing to do with scotland. the fact that i and millions of kids knew nothing about the reformation (a significant part of scottish history whatever your beliefs) is a national disgrace.
@Kinlochbervie50 Your absolutely right. but unfortunately religion has been our downfall, we replaced one that had gone bad and replaced it with one that zealots etc made just as bad.Hell thats being a scot for you.
I liked the corries, but the more I listen the more I realize that they seem to compress all the songs to 1/2 of what they once where. I like Ronnie's more traditional sounds but here he kinda races through. not bad but try Andy Stewart, or Fionna Kennedy they have fantastic versions of this one.
Why do these folks think they should rewrite a great poet like Robert Burns, leave out verses... poor. Shall I compare thee to a Christina Aguilara at the Super Bowl? But the music itself is fine.

The definitive version, and a great vocal performance from Ronnie.

This tune tugs at the heart strings just beautiful. Jimmy from Perth.
WOW..ALWAYS BE ON MY BEST FOLK DUO EVER
The best sung version of this love song xxx
This song was written by Robert Burns after he bade farewell to his lover Mrs Agnes (Nancy) Maclehose. She left to rejoin her estranged husband in Jamaica. Burns never saw her again.....
What a beautiful song so sweet and so softly sung great pleasure
The most beautiful of Burns songs by a wonderful singer.
This song is lovely a truly great by Robert Burns. Wish the Corries sang all the song. But great never the less.
@cakemania321 How on this earth or any other place people can dislike this lovely version of the Rabbie Burns words is beyond me also. Well said.

Such a beautiful song.
this was one of my mothers favourites.. i often wondered who she thought of when singing it.
Peter Dawson, we must be of a similar age. I can never forget "When Pitt the Younger camein to office ..... Pit the Elder etc. ad naseum". But the times have changed thank heavens. Saor Alba!
have you heard the one from eddi reader? it's my favourite, absolutely stunning.
Just beautiful.

this is wonderful! I like the Eddie Reader version too but this is beautifully sung.
So beautiful
@RABENUTAM and they don't sing rubbish they sing beautiful songs, and the way they sing them is beautiful.
Completely beautiful.
@firstaid10101010
I think you'd have to say that Edinburgh isn't in Scotland, if you think that Ronnie Browne isn't a Scot :-)
perfect version.
very true. how well put.

Grew up listening the Corries, whatever happened to "Scotland will flourish" the "A" side of "Flower of Scotland"
Just a beautiful song sung by two Scottish diehards. Jimmy from Perth.
Amen, Brother Robin.
@BlackTalon53 Lol. That is understandable. I simply had to defend Roy's honour. Cheers to a fellow Corries listener. =)
@fdarling27 are you related to the newzealand darlings???
Master Class
Aye...sheer brilliance, if those that don't agree, please just leave. You have my respect that it is not what you intended to find..
cheers John
magical
Am I imagining the sad look in Ronnie's eyes?
CHRIS TULLY: HE LOST HIS WIFE TO CANCER, SO YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT IMAGINING IT.
enought was spelt by the aid of a good islay malt called ardbeg. cheers.
So you want to smack the Corry, Roy Williamson, when he spontaneously exclaims during the song? You can see him vocalize on this video around 0:17, not to mention that the voice is clearly on a microphone.
very effective - a wee bit fast but who could equal them??
Scots free yourselfs and country 🏴 Gain your Independence, Break Away from London England Government.

lol, I hadn´t noticed that. I thought it was somebody unseen from the audience...
peacemaker hope alls well and daughters are fine i,m ex cop and ambulance and see stuff i wish i never had enjoy your kids and family thais song is beutiful
Burns wrote the poems but the corries made them anthems of our nation. God bless the corries one day we will rid ourselves of foreign Saxon rule.
Shut up and just enjoy the music. Take you bigotry to your out house and flush it with the rest of your pathetic opinions.
Oh and GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
@@jamitchell421 sounds like you give your opinion yourself anyway. Hypocritical idiot.
❤
me too
wel sadly thers only one left now
a generous partner
Aye, we had this for Mum's funeral, a haunting rendition, even though Ronnie misses a verse out here, listen closely, he says so at the end.
Phil*
@7777bigjim : Dougie MacLean's version is good, too.
compared to this all the other versions of this song on youtube sound pathetic ... it is like they just don´t get this song.
Try Michael Marra's version. He gets this song.
@peteralba mate, i'm of the young ilk taught about the period between the wars, the tudors and anything nothing to do with scotland. the fact that i and millions of kids knew nothing about the reformation (a significant part of scottish history whatever your beliefs) is a national disgrace.
Thought I would look at the comments for a change. Never again WTF is wrong with some of you? If you dislike the song don't watch the video.
@fdarling27
Anything by the corries missed Racheal , I I married her !
@Kinlochbervie50 Your absolutely right. but unfortunately religion has been our downfall, we replaced one that had gone bad and replaced it with one that zealots etc made just as bad.Hell thats being a scot for you.

I still prefer Eddi Reader’s version as her voice is like a harp. ♥️

I play this to my wife. She f*cking hates the Corries so its great for annoying her.
So beautiful
