I just fixed my son's 2003 Jeep Liberty... the fan wasn't coming on. It had the same symptoms described here (fuse was good, no codes so the relay and thermostat were likely good). However, when I put power directly to the fan (using a fused power supply) the fan ran. I traced the problem to the connector into which the fan pig tail plugs... It was shorted. I removed the connector and soldered the wires together and it works just fine. I suppose I could have gotten new male and female connectors and sliced them in... but why bother... it's a 17 year old Jeep! Other than my time it cost basically nothing to repair my son's Jeep. The moral of the story is don't automatically assume that the fan motor is bad as outlined in the video... there is alternative problem that will produce the same symptoms.
Thanks for the vid. About a month ago my radiator cracked on my ‘04 Liberty. I replaced that and didn’t have any issues until this week. When I’m sitting in traffic the temp keeps climbing, then when I start rolling again it drops back down to normal. I thought it may be the thermostat, but after watching this vid I’m going to check the fan. I’m very green at car repair so it’s a pretty steep learning curve. Thanks for the vid!!!
Thank you, good sir! I absolutely love learning from other people's trial and errors'. Saves me time and money. You've done us all a wonderful service by publishing this vid. Keep em coming.
Thanks Sir! My 03 Liberty Limited 3.7 103k seized up the factory a/c this summer so I removed that and ran a shortened cheater belt to compensate. Ran somewhat warmer since water pump not fully tensioned that way. Yesterday went full red hot and blew out most of the antifreeze. Dealer ripped me $390 for a new a/c idler replacement pulley, belt, antifreeze fill up, and said water pump and alternator needed replaced too but I ran out of cash by then. Alternator is fine as is, yet I'm still at 3/4 on the temp gauge... but guess what? Yep, fan not turning! So, would've needed belt and antifreeze anyway. I can trade idler core back for 1/2 price - waiting for next Spring to replace the a/c. But without seeing this he'd have got me for another $275 to replace a functional water pump and $350 for a new alternator, when getting a proper belt and fixing the fan is the solution! Thanks again! ... and yes, NO thanks to Jeep for their useless warning system on that! What I got was hot gauge and alternator light - NO CODES!!!
Here is a useful tip for you , Most Chrysler products with OBD II have a little known Easter egg , If you get in the car and close the door , turn the ignition ( without starting ) on , off , on , off , on quickly and leave it on the third time , the odometer will read out the trouble codes. Save yourself a trip to Autozone if you don't have a scan tool.
Thank you for taking the time to put together this great informative video. I was ready to buy a test kit for a head gasket leak and start searching for coolant leaks. Because of your video, I checked the fan first. All I had to do was disconnect my fan and use a meter to see that it was getting power to the plug... didn't even need to check relays etc.
YOU SAVE ME TONS OF MONEY... I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I DID BUY A RELAY BUT I FORGOT THAT IF IT WAS A RELAY PROBLEM I WOULD HAVE HAD AN ENGINE LIGHT... I BOUGHT A NEW FAN MOTOR AND IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM NOW... THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME 2004 JEEP LIBERTY FOLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS ....THANKS AGAIN
I had a cooling problem simultaneous with an Alternator burn out. I learned one relates to the other. Codes P-1682 Alternator. P-1491 main fan relay, the one located down on the right front fender well as you face the vehicle. I replaced the relay, alternator, and engine coolant thermo sensor. Cleared ecm codes and thought all was well. Next thing I find out that afternoon was we overheated with a/c on. "No ecm codes" ?????? P.O. very much because we were not close to home. This gentleman nails it! Replace fan motor and for a few bucks more with peace of mind just replace the high and low relays located in the relay/fuse box by the battery. If you replace the main fan relay and the thermo sensor you have illuminated all potential problems. Our car is 12 years old and has been great car with few problems, some recalls yes but a good safe car. Easy to work on and I like it.
The problem I have is when driving for long periods of time white smoke and burnt smell. Checked the coolant reservoir and was empty. I filled it a week before the first incidents I thought that may be caused by overfilling the reservoir. I checked for hose problems or craks on the tank with no luck. I'm going to check the fan to see if its working or not. Thank you very much for the video man, It really helped me!
Serpentine belt broke and caused engine heat to rise. That made pressure build up in radiator. The radiator had a tiny crack on the side at the top. I had noticed that every couple of weeks the radiator water level was down about 1/4 gallon. Bought a radiator & put & installed along with new hoses & thermostat. 8 months later radiator water level hasn't changed.
thanks for your vid. just had this problem happen a couple of hours ago. ugh!! but its vids like these that saves everyone from getting bent over at the dealership. so ....thanks again
Other things I found were the gasket around the overflow reservoir cap was split. I put a new Cap on the overflow reservoir, that helped. My radiator had a small crack on the side. It leaked about a gallon per month. I would have never found it, but my serpentine belt broke when tensioner pulley bearing locked up. I replaced bearing, all hoses, thermostat & I replaced the radiator and then the car ran perfectly. The radiator can be separated from the condenser and therefore can be done at home.
Thank you for the video. I bought a used Jeep a since then been a nightmare. Thermostat, coil packs, fan relay, alternator, and other issues. Yesterday I definitely had this problem where the dashboard read normal temp meanwhile radiator fluid spewing everywhere. Learned something new. I did noticed that in the past when starting the car the fan would not kick on. Time to go back and replace another part
Good luck with the Jeep. It is definitely a money pit. After I got all the temp problems corrected sludge would build up in the oil & cause oil light to come on. I took oil pan off & cleaned it out & then it circulated oil fine until 4 k miles latter, had to pull oil pan & clean pickup screen.
Stan Thx!! After checking fuse saw no codes via odometer concerning relay or temp sensor so skipped directly to fan replace and VOILA!! Cooling fine now . . . Advance auto had 20% off special and, after $20 reward cpn, final cost $77 plus tax!! P.S. 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited (wish more ppl would list car talking about!!)
Phil is correct. Those fan motors are two speed & low speed tends to go bad. I don’t have the Jeep any more. It was not the trouble free vehicle I wanted for my teenage son.
Check cooling system for rust. Not only on reserve, but by opening the rad faucet on the passenger side of rad. Rust settles on lower side of rad after a few hours. Never buy an used car with a lot of rust in radiator. The engine and heater core is been eaten from the inside by rust. Run away from those big problems...
if the vehicle is up to normal temp and you turn the a/c on high and you dont hear the fan kick on, its usually bad. I did use one from Auto you know who and have had no issues with it for several years now. Today we discovered that the coolant reservoir cap has been going bad, causing the coolant to escape from the the tank and in turn has causes=d a mess of problems so I replaced the cap, hoses, serpentine, water pump and thermostat and housing. All is good in the world of our Jeep Liberty.
Your fan motor is a two speed motor. It may work connecting it straight to the battery at high speed, but then it may not work at low speed. Might also be radiator leaking. Watch your coolant fluid level. If you lose any fluid at all it’s most likely a small crack in the radiator. That was my problem. Once I replace the radiator, I have no more issues with the jeep overheating. The radiator can be removed and replaced without disconnecting any air conditioner lines. The condenser can be disconnected from the radiator, so it is possible to do at home in your garage.
I got an 03 jeep 185 miles and everyone got some coolant issue. If you thinking of getting one don't but if you can get parts for the low and know how to install it yourself try your luck.
Thank you for your clarification. I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty. I have the same problem. I am in Kigali/ Rwanda now. It is very dificult to find spares for American brand cars. How to get this one you call "Relay Factory"?
I have a 04 that had Radiator fan changed can you tell me which way the air should be blowing toward the radiator or toward the engine because now I’m having overheating issues and it’s a three wire fan
Might sound like a dumb question but, what is the brown gunk in the reservoir? I thought it was oil at first because my motor is shot but it doesnt smell like oil
@@stanwgg maybe it is oil then, guy I bought it off of said 2 pistons fell out onto the road. Yet it still runs mint, but it has a crazy crazy engine knock. Maybe bent rod but I don't see how that would cause oil to get in the reservoir. Must have warped head the head.
My overheats when it’s at idle at operating temp. No codes, I’ll check the fan. Should it run constantly even at first start up? Where did you purchase the fan motor? Thanks, Dave.
my jeep is almost to overheating but doesn’t go that far because i’m always local around my neighborhood close by but after i let it sit for awhile like when i go into HEB then that’s enough for me to go back home 🏡 and it stays in the middle so im just confused what it could be but these things i will try and plus i don’t 🤔 think it will hurt the 🚗 vehicle by changing old parts for new so i’m hoping for the best
I'm going through the same thing. The fan works but not all the time. It's tricky because the Jeep doesn't over heat very often but it's been happening 1-2 times per month. Sometimes the fan works, sometimes not. I've changed the temp sensor, thermostat and radiator cap. We had some radiator problems, and has new radiator. I suspect I have a bad fan relay, fan, or fan connection. It's frustrating because it is intermitten.
If the fan is working, there could be a restriction in the water flow to heater core. Or heater core could be disconnected. It is probably not a coincidence that the heat is not working & the vehicle is overheating. I corrected other problems with my Jeep, but the main problem was the radiator. You may also need heatercore, or valve to open water flow to heater core. The things that absolutely needed replacing on my car were the fan motor & radiator. The rest of it was probably not necessary.
I own jeep liberty 04 also last month I took my jeep to the shop ,got mechanic replace my water pump and thermostat ..now its over heat..so should I just replace fan motor ..?
I do the same process like what he does......but after a year it went back the same problem again....Now i tried to use Clutch Fan Assembly that connect to Water Pump....and taken out that Radiator Fan Assembly....it is work and no more electricity involve.
2004 liberty ... Temp gauge looks good but I'm having the burnt smoke/smell after driving from the reservoir area below. Fan comes on while engine running. I noticed the reservoir on the left side is filled to the top and the overflow to the right has some in it and does rise slightly but they may be because revving the engine forces it too. I remember it looking even across if it is overflowing properly and has the correct amount of fluid. I'm going to start at the reservoir with a cleaning or replacement. No warning lights of any kind and fan does come on. Any other suggestions welcome.
I believe its a blocked heater core.which it is causing the overflow side to collect more and spit out that hole in the back as in this video. I had a small vapor leak in my original heater core so I had the heater core replaced 2 months ago at a shop and I told them to flush the system because I new I used a stop leak product for a couple months. They new this, . I have a feeling the system was not flushed adequately which cased a block in the new core. It's speculation right now.
Just to mention. The fluid levels I don't believe would look the same across the whole tank. Just up to the overflow area. Hence the discolored areas you see
@@domingogarcia8389 back to having problems again. I did replace the cap about 3 months ago. Seemed to help but now it boiling in the reservoir. I’ll check the cap again but I wondering if my water pump is shot. It used to be random but now it bubbles all the time after running it for a little bit
What I did to test my fan is run lead to the fan to power it on or off. Some time the coolant fan switch will go bad and not send a code because of the open loot. You can short the line and also see if the fan turn on with the key in the on/acc and the fan will spin.. you right on the fan not given any code. And what I see when this happens is the coolant will fall on top of the spark plug coils giving you code like po300 po304 & po306.. to stop this from happening my TBS FOR THESE JEEP with expansion tank like this is get a rubber hose and put it leading away and down the frame of the jeep.. this was my TBS TO JEEP when these jeep over heat. Dont know if this was your other problem..
Also, could be the Fan Clutch. Just had a similar problem. When it hits the temp limit, I can hear the relay, and I can hear the motor itself speed up, but I can also see the fan barely spinning. Just another thing to check. Thanks for this vid.
Chrysler should of never got rid of the belt driven fan I have the 2002 model and had the problem with the fan relay. I was like why do I need a relay for a belt driven fan until I took a closer look and seen their was a secondary electronic fan. But I think I might have a bad motor on that secondary fan because it doesn't come on.
Chris Robba The fan only comes on when the motor reaches temperature. So the fan will cycle on and off as it needs. After replacing all the parts that I did in this video I also found a small crack in the radiator and I replaced the radiator that’s what finally fixed the temperature problems in the Jeep.
I just bought a 08 Liberty and it doesn’t have heat and it overheats. I replaced the thermostat and it still overheats- tomorrow I will test the relays and the fan motor because my check engine came on today after I replaced the thermostat. Thank you any other advice from anyone please!!
I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty renegade The plastic quick connect clips with the red tab on it they melted and I had to just clip them off splice them together and everything is working perfectly fine now and you could also smell it that they were burnt and see it
I took my 05 liberty to midas today and the guy called me in about 2hrs and said I needed a new head gaskit but the jeep has plenty power and I haven't noticed any smoke so I will be taking it to a radiator shop friday.
I'm having the same problem, I did temperature sensor, cam positioning sensor, crankshaft positioning sensor, two new PCM's, all new pig tails. Now this was by Jeep Grab a in Medford, Massachusetts. they cost thousands of dollars for a loose temp sensor pigtail wire. Now the fan isn't working and this happened last time the temp sensor needed to be replaced.
Jeep Grava in Medford, Massachusetts. I'm gonna try running a direct power feed from the battery. should I do it directly off the battery or fuse block? And should I put a fuse on the power feed from the battery? or does in not matter because it's an electric motor?
I got a positioning sensor failure was about to replace it then my car started running hot. The engine wasn't dying or missing at acceleration like you would expect with the sensor out. It maybe that my fan is out and that's why it ran hot. Is that what you experienced? The error you get for positioning sensor is really the fan? Any feedback would be helpful.
why does your 2003 liberty look COMPLETELY different in engine area than mine?? MINE is a 2003 3.7 engine, but radiator fan is MECHANICAL not electrical, and there is WAAAY less room between engine and the radiator fan shroud than on yours.
Connect it directly to the battery. It should run at fast speed. It is a 2 speed fan. My fan did not work on both speeds. It definitely need replacing, but the radiator was ultimately the reason for overheating. Tiny crack towards top on the side. Once I replaced it there was no more overheating. There is a good video on TH-cam that shows how to replace radiator. It can be separated from the condensing coil, so it is possible to do at home.
I also found crack in radiator. Replaced radiator & never had another over heating problem. There was more than one problem. Two speed radiator fan only ran at one speed. Tiny crack on the side near the top of the radiator leak doubt a little bit of water which helped cause it overheat. Gasket on radiator cap shot, not ceiling correctly. To recap, fan motor replaced, radiator replaced, radiator cap replaced and my overheating problem was fixed. I also replaced the fan relay switch, temperature sensor and the thermostat.
My 05 v6 3.7 has always ran half way never noticed any bubbling or anything however I had Engine light pop on code p0340 and p0344 came up on dash cause you can turn switch 3 times to get some codes well I switched camshaft and crankshaft sensors still doing samething new spark plugs air filter. Hesitates, bucks, black weird smelling smoke and stalls.. no clue

Just to mention. The fluid levels I don't believe would look the same across the whole tank. Just up to the overflow area. Hence the discolored areas you see
LoudBarkDesigns. did you change the radiator cap? I did that. and that was the problem. the gasket of the cap was toasted
@@domingogarcia8389 back to having problems again. I did replace the cap about 3 months ago. Seemed to help but now it boiling in the reservoir. I’ll check the cap again but I wondering if my water pump is shot. It used to be random but now it bubbles all the time after running it for a little bit
You really remind of Dave on king of the hill
Thanks! So the fan didn't not work even with engine on?
Some Liberty's do not have fan clutches, :(
Chrysler should of never got rid of the belt driven fan I have the 2002 model and had the problem with the fan relay. I was like why do I need a relay for a belt driven fan until I took a closer look and seen their was a secondary electronic fan. But I think I might have a bad motor on that secondary fan because it doesn't come on.

Mine’s a radiator with a hairline crack in the drivers side plastic tank. Can’t complain, 19 years old!
Yeah had a tiny crack in radiator also. Replaced it.
@@stanwgg I’m going to do the same!🤓
My fan comes on but not right away, is this the relay not turning on the fan the right amount?
Chris Robba The fan only comes on when the motor reaches temperature. So the fan will cycle on and off as it needs. After replacing all the parts that I did in this video I also found a small crack in the radiator and I replaced the radiator that’s what finally fixed the temperature problems in the Jeep.
Chris Robba , the engine temp controls when fan comes on. When the engine gets hot enough the fan comes on until engine temp falls below set point
I just bought a 08 Liberty and it doesn’t have heat and it overheats. I replaced the thermostat and it still overheats- tomorrow I will test the relays and the fan motor because my check engine came on today after I replaced the thermostat. Thank you any other advice from anyone please!!
Did that fix your issue? I have the same problem
Update?
I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty renegade The plastic quick connect clips with the red tab on it they melted and I had to just clip them off splice them together and everything is working perfectly fine now and you could also smell it that they were burnt and see it
Thank you for the video. I was having this same problem.
Hey my car over heats but my fan is working especially when i turn the ac
Helped alot, thank you!!
I took my 05 liberty to midas today and the guy called me in about 2hrs and said I needed a new head gaskit but the jeep has plenty power and I haven't noticed any smoke so I will be taking it to a radiator shop friday.
Thanks for doing this video ✌️👍
TY for the video it was very helpful
why does your 2003 liberty look COMPLETELY different in engine area than mine?? MINE is a 2003 3.7 engine, but radiator fan is MECHANICAL not electrical, and there is WAAAY less room between engine and the radiator fan shroud than on yours.
You have the towing package
check your water pump if not head casket after all that
Great vid, but my fan is not working, no check engine light n I'm pretty sure the motor is fine.
@@stanwgg NOT a 2 speed fan buddy
I have a 2003 Liberty, it has an electric fan for ac only & clutch fan. I wish it didn't have the clutch fan.
Hi James hope you are ok, why don't you like the fan clutch?
Thank you for this
Thank you video really helped
Hola Melissa, que es de tu linda vida?
Change your radiador, hooses and thermostate
my fan won't cut off
Air blows toward motor. Pulls air through radiator & blows towards motor.
U forgot to check when air cond is off wait to see fan come on at 215 f
That's exactly what mine's doing!
Yup it did help me!
libertys unite !
Thank you.
12 volts will smoke those fans there less then 12 volts
very helpful thank you
Sorry to be the exception, but here we are. No codes, no dash lights; replaced the fan motor-still doesn't work.
Thanks 🙏🏽 I
Hank?? Hank Hill?? Is it really you, in the flesh??
your awesome boss!🖒
Thank you sir
thank you
that fan its a trash, i change it for a v8 durango fan
My 05 v6 3.7 has always ran half way never noticed any bubbling or anything however I had Engine light pop on code p0340 and p0344 came up on dash cause you can turn switch 3 times to get some codes well I switched camshaft and crankshaft sensors still doing samething new spark plugs air filter. Hesitates, bucks, black weird smelling smoke and stalls.. no clue
Thank you👍🏻
