    You're awesome. I watched a video of an artists tips, she said she sticks a bit of a kneaded eraser on the easel and when her tombo gets dirty she sticks it in the piece of kneaded eraser and twists it and there ya go. Clean

    Just wanted to leave this here, so for the faber castell perfection pencil, that actually does come with a brush as well and a good tip I saw somewhere was to sharpen it and snip off a bit from the tip with scissors to get an even thinner edge

      The problem with that one is that the eraser is hard and it wears off the paper easily, giving a weird texture when you draw on top of it

    great video but what is sometimes forgotten is how does the graphite cover after the area has been erased, some of them damage the paper so that you can't match the tone anymore.

    Thank you. Just a point about the kneaded eraser, you don't need to take any off really, just self clean by kneading it. They last a very long time but if pieces are being pulled off, and then lost, obviously they won't last. Really appreciate the reviews though thanks! :)

      +Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art (wildlife art) What might work for you is if you roll it into a ball and pull the top so the whole eraser is in a teardrop shape, you will find the ball part of the teardrop sits in your palm and doesn't soften as quickly as it is thicker, and then the point of the teardrop can be used to erase fine details. :) Thank you again Jason!

    Demonstration begins at 5:35 for graphite and charcoal. Coloured pencil demo is at 25:22. The polychromo pencil he used, is oil* based so, this requires another type of eraser. Poster putty (check prices but blu/white tac, is in Dealz & £ shops) or just blu tac seems to work best on oil. The demo is superb for graphite and charcoal. My research led me to the best manual (you can get 'electric' aka battery operated ones too - unless an actual re chargeable electric ones are available! ) for wax *based coloured pencils. 'Tombow mono sand' eraser for wax *based coloured pencils and ink&gel pens. (there is some ink in gel pens) Naturally, it's very abrasive so proceed with caution! They cost roughly £10 for 2. I think, that's saucy! A more budget friendly option is Koh - I - Noor twin side one.

    2: Tombow Mono Pastic
    3: Pentel Hi Polymer ( Light,Soft and the Ain Soft!)
    4: Kokuyo
    5: Factis Extra Soft
    There are a couple more Japanese erasers, that could easily be in this Top 5!!!

    Thanks for the info Jason. May favourite ones are ones you did not review. They are the Faber Castel black (they come in white as well) Dust Free erasers. They also make a flat disk like one that is also nice. And Maped makes a nice nice wedge shaped one that is really cheap and does a great job. But I've only tried them with graphite.

    Jason.. I think a better test would be to draw both a ^ triangle and a rounded line. That narrow part of the triangle is where the pencil one would be useful over the first three. Right now they are brand new but they do lose their edges rather quickly which would make much thicker lines and not good at getting into the nooks and crannies.

    Jason. The alternative to the Faber-Castell pink is the 185800 eraser pencil. This comes in a double ended version with the pink one; plus a ‘stand-alone’ version with a brush. I find this one much better than the pink version.
    Also another good one is the Tombow Mono sand & rubber eraser for ink and pen. This is brilliant. I accidentally got a streak of waxy Holbein on my colouring. I went through every eraser I had including the tiny Tombow and also their ‘all sand’ eraser. None of them worked except for the sand end of the duo. There must be a difference between the sand end of the duo and the ‘all sand’ versions.

    Thanks for all your videos on drawing equipment comparisons. Erasers are important. When I was a kid I got really frustrated trying to improve my drawings because all the erasers I had access to were terrible! :( It was bad enough being surrounded by an adult environment of people who didn't know anything about art and just thought it was "playing games" at best. So I hope a lot of really young people and maybe not so young people are watching this video, and your others :) Drawing can be a lot of fun if you have teachers who love to draw and love to teach others how to draw :)

I have another eraser from General's, Magic Black, for Charcoals, may be under another brand I have no idea.. I love my Zero for drawing so much..then I even cut my Vinyl erasers into sharp shapes to get what I need, they are cheap enough. even to use in my electric erasers... great help as always Jason, thank you

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing it. It's certainly very helpful. I personally have used the regular eraser stick, but found it too pliable and wondered if the Tombow Mono Zero would have worked better. Now I know that it does and I have the option of the Tuff Stuff as well. Also, I'm always hearing about blue tack and wondered what it was. Now I know and will likely be switching out my kneaded eraser for blue/white tac.
    Great video. Very informative.

    Hi Jason,
    in your opinion is there any difference between the blue and white "blutac"? I know at least one artist who blends the 2 together...

    • @wildlifeartjm
      @wildlifeartjm  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bradford Yorks hi - to be honest I could see no difference at all. Lots of artists have their favourite things, but have never actually tested anything side by side in the way I did it, so sometimes they just stay with something out of habit. But for me personally I would use either.

    Do you know if anyone other than tombow make very thin eraser refills? Thereason I ask is I got a pack a whileago ago off ebay, that are about 3.2 mm diameter, but I cant remember the makers name. They are fantastic, instantly cut through dense layers of 8b or9b graphite where staetdlters and kneaded etc wouldnt touch it and slide and smear over. Also, doesnt bend and snap off under pressure. I use it in a DIY wood holder. I'm down to my last 1/2 inch. God knows what I'll do next

    I often use the Pentel Clic pen-style eraser.
    Pros: vinyl refills are cheap, picks up quite a lot of graphite
    Cons: Too wide for fine detail (7mm), soft so bends a little in use
    I have the mono fine round tip eraser too which I use for fine lines, its harder than the Pentel so doesn't bend, the refills are expensive if you work out the £$ per kilo ratio.
    Though it is fine I would like something even finer.
    I have also used the pink faber-castell pencil style eraser. Its hard so can be cut to a fine point but because its hard it doesn't pick up as much graphite as a softer material as you found out - it doesn't last very long either esp. if you sharpen it a lot to keep the tip fine.
    The brush ended stick idea is good - I once blew on the paper and accidentally spat on it. Is there a detachable brush top out there? Its good to just flip it around to brush the rubber waste away.

    • @Cutieyum4
      @Cutieyum4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mcquinn01 Try using a drafting brush, they have long handles, long bristle heads, don't damage or blend on the paper. Around 10 inches, $7 US

    Hey Jason. great review,thanks. i have found a black eraser( could be Derwent or Faber-Castell? ) thats great. even does a pretty good job on pastels, I havent tried it with charcoal or coloured pencil yet. Just one thing, i have been told that whilst the Blu-Tak works really well,..it doesnt play as nicely with other mediums. leaving a residue behind that can repel adding extra layers. (especially pastels) so they reccommend using the kneadable eraser for better quality. what are your thoughts?

    • @wildlifeartjm

      +Corina Graham not sure but will certainly look in to it :)

    • @donnaryan71
      @donnaryan71 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Corina Graham The black eraser is Faber Castell. It's marketed as a no-residue eraser (you know how erasers leave their droppings everywhere ) :). Although it does produce eraser dust, they tend to ball up and are easy to brush off. I love the black erasers...but be careful if working on an area you need to keep really light, black being black can sometimes leave an oh-so-slight dark mark on your support, depending on what it is. This eraser works particularly well with coloured pencil on smoother, slicker surfaces, such as drafting film and hot press supports that some artists favour. Hope this helps someone

      +Jason Morgan - Wildlife Art (wildlife art) I'm sure you will like it. I was quite pleased when I first tried it so will be interesing to see your results. It is now my go-to eraser, my first port of call EXCEPT if where I am erasing it is vitally imporant to maintain whites. (or I obviously need to use a tacky eraser like Blu Tac). As I said previously, because it is black, by nature it can leave a subtle stain, but this depends on what support (paper or board for those unfamiliar with the term support) you are using. No problem if you are going to colour over it, but if the area is to remain white white, then this eraser might harm it. The exception is on drafting film, where this eraser will take back the coloured pencil all the way to bare film without harming the film, providing it's done gently. All other erasers that I know of will kill the surface of drafting film (often favoured by coloured pencil artists) so that you can't redraw over it, they remove the surface and leave an annoying shiny patch that the pencil won't cling to. Hope this helps someone.
