    You have cost me so much money since I discovered you a week ago. You are certainly the channel I’ve been looking for to help improve my drawing. So it’s the draw for my pencils from The Works and hello Derwent, staedtler, Tombo, M&R, KUM, Koh I Noor and many more.... Not entirely your fault. If I can make a hobby expensive then I will.

    I had read Lineke’s comment about the kih-i-noor and I also think it is in a class of it’s own. Best eraser I ever had, so smooth and good! Now I need to find an equally good deal on them!

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
    I’m currently looking for fine line erasers and before I found this video I had already looked at both the Koh-i-noor pen eraser and the Tombow Mono Zero
    Luckily I have easy access to both of them in nearby stores, so tomorrow I’ll go and get one of each because why not :)
    Also thanks for your great tutorials, I’m just a happy amateur but watching your stuff have greatly improved my graphite technique!

    I just discovered the Kohi Noor eraser while buying some color pencils. I was so impressed I am doing pencil drawings now, while before that I was only working with watercolor. It feels like drawing with a white pencil. I t was the last one in that shop, but I'll look for it on another and stock up if I find any.

    LYRA makes by far the BEST kneadable eraser. Closest thing to blue tack,however more suited for erasing and highlights!! You can erase all down to a hair thin lines! I,ve tried White blue tack, the regular one as also all the kneadable erasers from the big brand names.LYRAmakes the best by far.(Better than Faber Castell)

  • @zenoist2399
    @zenoist2399 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can sometimes knead different putty rubbers together to get a composite.
    Daler Rowney putty rubber (which is slightly more springy) and Staedtler putty rubber mix well.

    I had a Derwent electric eraser and got really fed up with it, for reasons you've already mentioned and a few more. Eventually it packed up and I was well pleased it did, because I bought a Sakura Electric Eraser on somebodys advise. What a huge quality difference, same thing, but properly made . The lightest touch on the button and it buzzes, but you can't see the eraser go round, but it is, AND you can sharpen the point to the extent you can erase tiny dots. When I bought it, (about two years ago), it cost about £10, but I've just looked on Amazon and they're costing over £30, but in my opinion they're well worth it. I'd buy another tomorrow.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I looked at the Sakura a while ago, I thought they were very pricey compared to the Derwent at about £5 , I heard a lot of good things about the Sakura, and I would buy one if my Derwent packs up, I have had my Derwent for about 4-5 years now and it still going strong.

    • @sibandy
      @sibandy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jon, yeah, they do seem to be expensive now, but as I said, I bought mine on Amazon for about £10. My Derwent packed up about a year after I bought it, the battery connections fell apart due to corrosion, also I had to start it with my hand, but I just wasn't happy with it anyway. The quality of the Sakura is two levels above the Derwent, like getting out of a Ford into a Jag.
      I enjoyed the video, by the way - interesting. I've just ordered five Koh-I-Noor pencil erasers, I think you're putting they're sales up daily!

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its funny that there isn't a battery eraser that falls somewhere in the middle price range, say £15-£20, its quite a gap £5 for a Derwent and £30 for the Sakura, Anyway hope enjoy the Koh i noor erasers, they are superb, maybe I should contact Koh i noor and ask for a commission lol

    With your Pentel ZE31...you can replace the refill with a ZER4 refill. It is made for pencil and ink and is a bit more 'sandy' that you may enjoy. My fav eraser is the Pentel ZE15..it is triangular shape. I also like the Pentel ZE80 which is square.

    Very informative smoothie,blu tack is readily available here in Australia,my kids used to use it to place posters on the wall,when I transfer my drawing onto watercolor paper I can roll it over the graphite ,so I'm left with faint lines,knead able erasers are made from petroleum product.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Maria, I like to roll blu tack over areas of my drawings too, it helps to give a nice faded effect, funny you should mention that as I was demonstrating that techique on my Patreon page the other day, I still use the blu tack for sectioning of my palette the way you told me, that's a clever use for blu tack and works well, It has so many uses, www.marylkaart.com

    Great video! ... Anyway, the KOH-I-NOOR is my next step (found some on eBay). I've tried everything from Pencil Cap erasers (the material they use didn't erase worth a darn) to Tombow types (too flexy and bulky for fine erasing). I've been looking for these old wood jobs like the KOH-I-NOOR [for finer erasing] while Faber Castell are ridiculously expensive (I'm still waiting for some cheap china ones to come out). The electric eraser also looks like it's worth a try.

    For anyone wondering and because he mentioned some confusion in the US about Blu Tack.
    Blu Tack is usually called Sticky Tack (or sometimes labeled "mounting putty" or if you grew up out in the country... 'ticky tack) in the US. It's available in any office or school supply store and it's at Walmart/Target in the office supply section. It can also usually be found at any big box hardware store like lowes/home depot.

  • @josegarcia303
    @josegarcia303 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not pointless to sharpen a eraser! That's why you have an eraser, to use it, to make the finest details... round edges will always form in all eraser. No matter how many times you sharpen the eraser, for what all counts is the drawing. Same cocept goes to pencils, you sharpen them to make FINE details.

    I also like the Koh-I-Noor one! It was very surprising for me because most of these pencil-erasers aren't too good I was most familiar with the ones from Faber Castell, but sometimes I even prefer the KIN over the Tombow mono zero.
    I'm from Germany and Koh-I-Noor is popular enough so that you'll find them without trouble, maybe it's easier or faster if you order these from Germany?
    I also want to give the Staedler Mars plastic a try, it should be very near to the Tombow mono. More in a block eraser, but they also have the option of an pen eraser. In the "pen", the size isn't comparable at all, the Mars plastic is near the size of the derwent pen eraser

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen the Staedtler mars eraser pen, it looks good, but like you said, its not as fine as the KIN, could always trim it down to a sharper point with a craft knife, that may work.

    • @Tippel3
      @Tippel3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, It could still work well for my purposes but that's very individual. As I said, maybe I'll try it as a block first, when my Tombow mono eraser is used up, I'll replace it with the mars plastic and maybe I can get a feeling for it and how fast a fine edge on the eraser will wear down and if the mars plastic pen would still be useful.
      But I also know that you can buy the mars plastic as refills for mechanical pencils, they're much smaller in diameter but obviously way more expensive and very tiny. No real option to think about for me, because I have the Tombow mono zero for very fine details and the surprising good KIN.

    I found that if you use a bit of tape for the clip on the end, it helps to keep it from rotating. Just something that has helped me.

    • @greekveteran2715

      I use a piece of LYRA kneadable eraser on top of my Tombow Mono Zero 2.3mm, shaped as a cone, for even finer erasing/highlights! It also stops the annoying rotation of the Tombow pencil eraser!

    I'm struggling to find a Derwent Eraser pen, there's plenty of the battery operated ones but I can't find the standard chunky one 😒
    I've got the tombow mono zero one on your recommendation and I love it, it's great for rubbing out detail but I want something a bit chunkier.
    There appears to be what looks similar items by other makers but I'm unsure about the size and if they are the same, in the photographs you really cat tell and they don't always have measurements in the item description (I'm looking in eBay)
    Can you make any other recommendations which are close?

      can i just get away with koh-i-noor and not buy tombow anymore? i was initially planning to buy tombow because i really needed a fine tip eraser but after watching your video i feel like the koh-i-noor one is what i really need! but since you almost like the two equally, maybe there's a reason why i would want the tombow one as well? i kinda just want to get koh-i-noor alone since it's way cheaper than the tombow but maybe this eraser will benefit me as well?

    Best kneadabke eraser is the faber castell blue one without a doubt. I have tried a few and that is the only one that remains true. I tried blue-tack but it wasn't as good imho.
