    Sometime I would love for you to show a new quilt before and after washing

      I can do that! Do you mean a new (to me) vintage quilt or a new (newly made) quilt?

      I newly made that you want to make soft

    Great lessons to be learnt, it's a stunning quilt. I didn't think about the space between the blocks because the fabric is a adorable, but I will keep that in mind. I made a mistake with my Granddaughters quilt at Christmas, I'll send a pic in with the other ones and make points, but it is to do with washing a quilt after making it, which I always do, and the benefits of more quilting in squares. I am learning a lot through your videos and my big bloomers lol. Thank you, loved this 💖

    I love the quilt! I also always wash and dry my quilts before I give them! If they start to fall apart I could fix the weakness.
    The wear on these quilts is often in the middle because that’s the place on the bed that you sit , lay down and jump up and down on!
    Thanks for a great video!

      Great tip! As for the wear on the quilts--yes! Also, sometimes if they have been folded for a long time, the centers get more exposure and wear. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

    I like the wide sashing.

    • @SewtheDistance

      It has been growing on me, too! This has become a favorite quilt to snuggle up with on the porch. It is so soft and cozy.

  • @carolinec3951
    @carolinec3951 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Part of the reason for the softness is the hand sewing and hand quilting. All of my quilts that are completely hand done are soft and feel like an old time quilt.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that right? I didn't even think of that! Do you think it is because they are handled so much during the making process? Great observation!

    • @carolinec3951
      @carolinec3951 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SewtheDistance Yes, I think the making process results in the softness. I have had some of my quilts machine quilted and they were stiff. So I surmise that the hand quilting is what does the trick.

    Awe... Im sad that they didn't want to keep the memories too! but, I am glad you rescued it and know you will care for it! I love how simple the nine patch pattern is, but the quilts always look so different because of the different interpretations with patterns, colors, and sashing! I just love quilts! Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you! The nine-patch is a great block.

    I love the softness of the colors. They're so beautiful & don't have such a stark transition between the block & sashing.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isn't that the sweetest? I love that softness throughout.

    Amazing amount of work in this quilt! It is still quite lovely. Maybe some repairs?

      Yes! The quilt, especially the quilting, is amazing. Repairing this quilt is on my list, that's for sure!

    My grandmother made utilitarian quilts (with a similarity to this one) due to no central heating. So, I tend to imagine the history in a quilt such as this rather than doing a critique which is really unfair. This vintage piece is precious in it's own right. I would quilt it then attach a label estimating it's time frame. This would be done for those coming after me whoever they are.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh goodness! I don't mean any disrespect to the maker. I don't judge quilts at all--I simply show what we can learn from the makers who went before us, that's all. I adore all these quilts. I hope you take a look at some of my other videos to see what I mean.

    I always assumed that you should wash a quilt before giving it away.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, not everyone does and when I started quilting, I didn't know I was supposed to.

    The fabrics in 9 patch may have been from used fabric as in clothing

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s a good possibility! Great thought!

    I think you would call that quilt a crib size as opposed to a baby quilt.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True! Crib size would make more sense.
