So back in The Lake District this week for another solo wild camp, this time on the summit of Red Screes at 776m. Good test for the Wild Country Helm Compact 1 too.
Weather was supposed to turn for the worse during the night so went prepared but managed to get a fantastic sunset. Woke up completely in the clag but managed to get up very early and get back to the car just as the rain come in so was very pleased overall.

Yes I ALWAYS enforce LNT in my wildcamping videos and even in my day hike videos. We all need to do our bit to try and look after the beautiful mountains and countryside and maintain their beauty. It really annoys me when im out and about and see litter etc in places (which I have picked up and taken with my own rubbish multiple times and shown in some of my vids)

The sunset really was awesome and kind of unexpected as it was that dull and hazy when I got up there.
The way I went up though was effort with the pack on, mega steep lol.

Yeah was a real last minute camp haha. Finished work lunch time on the Friday, packed my bag then had a nice 4 hour drive to the Lakes. Was so glad I put the effort in though ended up being an amazing night AND managed to dodge the rain and storm warnings which actually started when I was back in my car so big bonus that haha.
Was incredible there so great to be out in the mountains.

Thanks for watching and joining me on my very last minute camp haha. Finished work lunch time on Friday and knew it was a 4 hour drive, but just packed my bag and off I went. So glad I did had a super night!!
Its definitely worth camping and being outdoors whatever the weather, but so glad I managed to see a decent sunset was pretty cool in the end.
You definitely need to get yourselves there.

Looks like you got a great camp spot in the end mate. I managed to get over to Dove Crag just in time to catch the sunset. Sleeping in the bivvy was bliss. Great vid, keep it up!

Yeah had a little scout round and found that spot looking over towards the sunset, was a no brainer lol.
Me and the other chaps actually noticed a couple if lights on the high and low parts of Dove Crag area, and I wondered if one of them was you haha. Glad you got over there ok and enjoyed the bivvy, think ill definitely be taking one round that area soon.

Another great video, you might not of got the views in the morning but at least you avoided the worst of the weather. Cracking views the night before though with an amazing sunset. It's great meeting people up in the hills they are always the nicest people. Hope you are well mate

I love the little area in yout tent for your pack! Great video and great solitude.
Its cool right!? Its basically a vestibule area the same size as by the door and great for storing things in there. My pack manages to fit quite nicely which gives me more room in the main porch area. This was a 65L pack too!

Another great camping video Chris. I walked Red Screes from Ambleside when I was in the Lakes recently and the weather was horrendous and I couldn’t see anything beyond about 2 metres. It looks an amazing view from your evening footage. Looks like you had a typical misty weather window in the morning. Enjoyable watch again and that’s given me an idea for my first Lakes wild camp. 👍
Ahh cool!! Yeah I can imagine haha so glad I got the views on the night time as the morning was useless lol. Rain and thunderstorm warnings were due from 0800 but so glad I dodged them. Got back to my car around 0750 and as I was driving back on the Kirkstone Pass towards Windermere huge rain drops started hitting my window, so was pleased about that haha.
Hope you get yourself up to the Lakes soon and manage to get a good camp! If you ever want anyone to fly up there to camp with you and the timing worked out give me a shout 😊👍🏻

Thanks Daz!! Yeah was a bit of a disappointment in the morning haha but glad I got that sunset!! It was forecast to be very hazy (like when I first got to the summit) with low cloud coming in early. So pretty happy when it cleared up a bit. Was so gorgeous 😊😊

Haha thanks mate!! Yeah was wacked pal had been up since 0400, done my shift at work then as soon as I finished had 4 n half hour drive then a rush up to the summit 😂😂 So worth it though once I was settled 👌🏻

Haha yeah I was actually going to go up that way then saw the Kilnshaw Chimney and looked a bit mad to attempt with my pack on so went round. Later I found out there was a path kind of next to it I could have just gone up 🤣🤣 Oh well you live and learn haha next time I shall take that route if camping in the area anyway.

Good afternoon Chris, kettle and and let's do this!...mate, the car park here is our first pit stop to ever Lake journey we make, so many selfies of Kat and I guzzling tea after many hours in the car lol. Really interesting to watch you climb Red screes, and middle Dodd, very much on our to do list. Absolutely smashing veiws and really well documented as always. Looked hot mind!

You should definitely get up there some fantastic views when the weather is on your side. Just if you go the way I went be prepared for a steep accent haha. My backpack prob didnt help the situation 🤣🤣

Another great video Chris! I've often wondered if subscribers who have never backpacked up and down a mountain, realise just how physically and mentally draining it is! It sure makes for a wonderful sleep tho huh?
Yeah ive wondered that too haha, plus the steepness never looks as bad on camera. This was short but very steep towards the start. Gained elevation very quick, loved it though haha and definitely helps you have a nice sleep. Well most of the time 😆 I was lucky with this one usually wind keeps me up on summit camps lol but all part of the fun!

@@theheightoflife whistling wind and torrential rain are both perfect for me to sleep too! I've noticed that photos don't show how steep they are either! Its so addictive tho huh? We've done a ten mile walk today, after taking the car for her service and fetching her back later, plus walking town and back! Thats 20 miles on foot in two days! ☺

@@robs_rambles Yeah I can imagine! There was loads of that white foamy stuff on the longer grass from the Spittlebugs / Froghoppers so wanted to tey and avoid pitching all over that lol. Was glad when I found that bit of grass.

It is a very good and strong tent! I have the Helm Compact 2 aswell which is what id compare the Cloud Peak 2 against. Its 220 / 225 cm inside but the 'ends' are quite high so not as bad as a Lanshan for example even though that says the same length.
I use the Helm Compact 2 on my Helvellyn camp video think its the one before this one if you were interested in seeing that one with the room difference etc.

@@theheightoflife class mate no I'm a bit behind and have a queue of vids stacking up so trying to muddle through as best I can. I'll check it out tonight mate. The 1 will be better in the high winds but the 2 offers some nice livable space in those finer months 🙌.

Yeah the 1 would have an edge in the high winds but it got bad in the night, the Lanshan nearly collapsed lol but the Helm 2 was rock steady really surprised me and definitely gave me some confidence in it. So pretty good test really 😃
Think ill still be using the 1 more just wanted a 2 man tent too for that bit of extra space sometimes and only had a Vango Tempest 200 Pro so got the Helm 2 to replace that as I think it would out perform the Tempest in bad weather and winds by far.
