    As a firefighter I highly recommend keeping a CO2 extinguisher located outside your charging area. A standard ABC will work but should a fire occur the CO2 extinguisher wont produce the mess involved with an ABC. Also if you charge in a room. Definitely have that charge box. Been to quite a few fires recently involving battery abuse.

      assault on battery?

      Right on, I just retired after 23yrs on the job, when I got into the hobby 6yrs ago I was a little cocky about the safety, thinking I've seen battery fires before. Had a cheap ass charger and did almost zero research into charging a lipo pack. Was using a lipo bag, but was renovating basement, and my abc and CO2 extinguishers were not in normal place. My first quad was a pre-built racer from a guy online, was common back then to use balance lead to power vtx. So I was charging 4s 1300mah, no balance lead, wrong setting, and bam it went from thermal run away to working fire in like 20sec. Melted lipo safety bag like it was a plastic gas station bag. Drywall started to ignite 3ft away, no flame impingement, straight radiant heat. Dumped 2 lrg glassed of water on it while gf tried to find extinguishers I moved. finally found the ABC one, which was a nice 10lb-er I thought would be plenty, it barely put it out..lol. I've told that story to many people getting into the hobby, they are no joke.

      I meant to say this originally, but went off topic...Was so pissed at myself I went the other way on safety, I built a lipo bunker box with a self extinguishing feature using AFFF. Well, not the real stuff, but it's cheap to make, baking soda with a splash of Potassium Sorbate mixed, and tossed in the bottom of an old mammo box. Then I rigged a system on the peg board above it, using Folgers coffee can with some white vinegar and splash of dish soap in it, tied to fishing string going down into the ammo box. Fire breaks fishing line, dumps can of vinegar n soap on baking soda lined in bottom of box, poof, you got AFFF knock off, foam. I'm working on making a video on how it works, I'll post here when finished.

    I always get a Sharpie and write numbers on my batteries. That way I can effectively rotate them so they all get equal use. I can also keep track of a certain battery if it's not performing on par with the rest of them. Thanks for another informative video!

    • @JohnFHendry
      @JohnFHendry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I do the same and figure most people also number and date their batteries when new too. What I found is important is to always use/charge them in order...1,2,3,4,5,6,7, etc. which creates a pattern and makes a weak battery stand out as well as keeping track of their charge states by memory without guessing. I used to keep a log but found doing that provides enough information to maintain and monitor them. I call it a rule now after doing so exposed a bad charger port on a 4 port multi-charger. Thought it was a bad battery at first.

    • @StupidTVclips

      DATE them also

    • @blue03r6
      @blue03r6 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you had a better charger you would be able to see the IR of them and you wouldn't need to wonder what is going on with the battery. no need to date them etc.

    • @plasticapple704
      @plasticapple704 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blue03r6 My chargers are quite good actually. But I like numbering identical batteries so they all get equal use. Nothing wrong with knowing how old a battery is either.

    • @blue03r6
      @blue03r6 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plasticapple704 but are you actually keeping track of how many cycles they have? Knowing their internal resistance is what you need to know. Also knowing which cells are out of balance. If you don't have a charger that shows you the IR and is capable of balance charging to veey close MV it doesn't matter how much you keep track of things or rotate. That's honestly a waste of time as it doesn't do anything. A good charger such as a icharger 308duo you can actually track all of that with their charging software. But seeing the IR is what you need to see. The more use the higher it goes. And cheap batteries like turnigy come with out of matched cells. The pack is only as good as the worst cell.

    The videos of fires REALLY drive your points home. I am relatively new to drones and I did not know ALL of this stuff until now. In the beginning I was leaving my 2s batteries fully charged for months until i learned about leaving them at 50%. Only one swelled, maybe 1-2mm on each side.(it was safely disposed of) Now, I have a very nice battery charger with lots of diagnostics (Which I need to master). This vid showed me I still have a lot to learn.

      Lithium batteries are neither specifically listed nor exempted from the Federal

    GREAT compiling of valuable information!!! ALL good. 👍👍
    The only one I have difficulty with (and it's NOT YOU, it's my situation), I CAN'T afford a bunch of Batteries like seemingly everyone else in the Hobby...
    I've got ONE 3S for my FlySky Radios (one between ALL of them), ONE 3S for my Aircraft and a 3S and 2S for my Crawlers.
    And those took a long time to acquire! 😖😞
    I may be one of the last People to start using Lipos - because I've READ the information and SAW the Videos.
    I WAITED until I could save up for a GOOD Lipo/LiFe balance Charger!!! It conditions, inspects, balances, REJECTS charging BAD Batteries...
    And will set a Safe, Storage Charge! 👍👍
    In a Hobby where I can no longer afford SQUAT, I sure don't want to LOSE what little I have...

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're discharging your cells down to zero after a run, and then using them AGAIN??
      THAT is a HUGE NO-NO for lipo batteries! If you discharge them down to zero, and then attempt to charge and use them again after that, they CAN become very unstable and self-ignite at ANY point during the very next charging cycle, OR just randomly at ANY time while charged.
      It's VERY dangerous to fully discharge lithium cells, and then attempt to use them again. 💥 🔥

    Good info! One question though. I have three different chargers, EV Peak QC3, Traxxas EZ Peak Live Dual and ISDT T8, and none of them charge to the same voltage. They don't even balance the same. What on charger says is balanced another charger can say is off by 0.1v or more. If lipos are so sensitive why aren't the chargers more equal?

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So it's all about the quality of voltage electronics on your chargers. I would trust the best brand or most expensive as the reference. Ourp Protek 680 and Hobbymate Duo read exactly the same, to .01 volts.
      So the lipos are not really that critical in terms of peak voltage. 4.2 volts per cell is the limit and they all shut off around there.... 4.19, 4.21, 4.25, etc.
      In a test by friends to blow up lipos, they started getting puffy at 4.5 volts. And the really hissing, fire started at 4.8-4.9 volts. So that is pretty far up there.

    Hi, thank you for the video. You explain things in a way a noob like me can easily understand. I really appreciate that. One additional question: If a fire occurs, what is the best way to try and put it out? Is there a specific type of fire extinguisher to keep on hand? I believe that for grease fires in the kitchen you should never use water as it will only cause the fire to spread, that one should instead attempt to smother the flames using a large thick towel, and or cover the area with baking soda. Thanks again!

      They're batteries...it'll ironically result in a _C͟h͟e͟m͟i͟c͟a͟l͟ f͟i͟r͟e͟._ So you would use a Sodium bicarbonate extinguisher; aka class A B; AKAA just a normal extinguisher nothing crazy like buying something expensive & going on TH-cam for the manual that explains all this already.

    Bought batteries with a much too low C-rating once (my first fpv drone). The battery lost power extremely fast, performance became unreliable and all of the sudden the battery was at 2,6V/cell and super hot and puffy. Good thing it was a cold and dry winter so little to no risk of fire spreading. Speaking of which, is there any way of predicting how much power a model will suck down or is it trial and error? These days I err on the side of caution and pretty much always buy C-ratings of 75+ if possible.

    I always put my swollen lipo batterys in salt water, i leave battery for around 3 to 4 days in a bucket to discharge, do not remove once you have placed in salt wateter until 4 days, ihave done this for over twenty years, and disposed of hundreds, thankfully we have great C ratings on batterys today stoping stress on cells giving longer lipo life, discharging a swollen battery with discharge charger is good but i have seen them get agitated and burn up, get an extension lead and discharge in the middle of a open space outside, stay away if you see fire as the gases are strong and temperature can reach 600C, let it burn out no water, i was told over twenty years ago to put them into 20% sea salt to 70% cold water, this information was from a battery manufacturer, the batterys will turn to paper type slug in 4 days making it safe to dispose of in recycling, do this in a open space and away from pets and children and me ;) Stay safe guys and have fun with your toys, don't store lipo batterys in your home, ive come close to house fire in my early days of model flying large aircraft.

      I've heard that immersing in salt water is not a good idea. The terminals can corrode before the charge is all gone from the plates of the cells. So I connect my old batteries to some 12v car bulbs and leave them until the bulbs no longer glow - then I put them in salt water for another couple of days.

      @@stedenvideos3825 i agree, but ive never had a problem with using salt and water over many years with using 2s-3s-4s-5s-6s, draining with a bulb could put strain on the battery depending on what type of wattage bulb you use-and the voltage of battery, draining with low wattage would be good to trickle discharg and then salt water as you mentioned.

      I just won't recommand that because in case of any cell is a little damaged then you will put lithium in your water, water that you will empty in your sink or toilets what is absolutly terrible for nature.
      Just fully discharge by connecting to your battery anything that uses curant such as a light bulb for exemple until is is completly empty, now you can also find some lipo-killers in your hobby store.

    I am just getting used to the Lipo Batteries I used to be a nickel Metal hydride guy and I just got used with them. I ran NiCad batteries back in the day when you had to drain them to completely empty and recharge them ,and you only got five minutes out of a race, because a 4 minute race meant you had to use that battery in 4minutes 30 seconds to get the most out gear ratios and specialty brushed motors to win a race. I have a bunch of drills and everything that I use until they're dead and have a backup for them but I currently only running One battery with my trx4 blazer it's a 3-cell 4000 will it hurt it when I come back from a half an hour or 45 minute cruise to the woods to balance the battery on the charger? Until the next time I take it out a couple days later?

    Another very nice thing about having 2 or more battery packs is that you'll be easily able to tell if something is going wrong with one of them. If one of the packs is suddenly losing punch or runtime, it's much easier to have another pack to compare it to. Using just one all the time, you may not notice the abnormal degradation if you don't have another one to compare it to.

    I don’t use lipo’s for rc’s but I do use them with my Airsoft guns and this information is still very useful thanks. I understand that you can never be too safe but I’ve had lipo’s for years and have never seen a fire… yet. I just charge them on a metal pan that I can quickly grab and toss out the window if need be, and I’m always within a couple of feet whenever I’m charging them so I can catch any early warning signs. That’s also something that should be mentioned is that they will typically give an early warning sign that it’s gonna fail and eventually combust. Things like cracking or popping sounds, a funny fruity smell, or the battery is too hot to the touch. If any of these things occur I tend to stop charging and take the battery outside to give a second to cool off before disposing cause at that point there’s no reason to risk using it again just buy another.

    Storage charge is 3.85 volts per cell. #11: Don't bang them on the table. #12: Don't pull on the wires. #13: Check the internal resistance of the cells occasionally. If one or more cells gets much higher than the others, dispose of the battery.

    Hi thanks for this. really useful. Just a quick question. If I store Lipo batteries in a proper place after doing the "storage Charge" (as per Traxxas Chargers) are they completely safe? My understanding is the risk is a lot higher when charging. but if using an original traxxas battery with the traxxas charger in the Balance charge mode, only before using and when done using the Storage charge for storage, then it should be perfectly safe. correct ?? or are the batteries so unstable the EVEN with the limited storage charge they can ignite/explode while in storage?

    When I started out with fpv quads I had trouble finding how many amps to charge batteries at. I thought maybe 2 amps per battery was probably safe. My phone charges at 2 amps. 1c, 2c. I didn't know what that meant. I was charging 520mah and 450mah batteries at 2amps each. The batteries never got hot or even warm so I thought it was fine. Then I finally found out what 1c meant. I should have been charging my 450mah batteries at 0.4 or 0.5 amps. Not 2 amps. Now it takes 45 to 1 hour to charge batteries, not 15 to 20 minutes like it use to. So I was lucky to not start a fire or damage a battery. I always checked battery temp and checked to see if the charger, wires to the parallel board, or the power wire to the wall plug ever got warm. They never did but I was still charging too fast.
    I do have a question. I know charging at 1c is the safest, but is it considered unsafe to charge at 2c? My 1100 4s, and 13004s batteries charge up in about 45 minutes at 1c. For some reason my 1500mah China Hobby Line 4s batteries take at least an hour at 1c. My charger ISDT 608ac is capable of up to 8 amps, but I never have gone that high. Charging two 1500mah 4s batteries on a parallel board is charged at 3 amps for 1c.

    How often should you balance charger?

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The safest way is 100% of the time. Most chargers today balance charge 100% of the time. It's not necessary but one really can't reliably tell when it's needed. So it's safest to do every time. It does not take any extra time if the battery is already balanced.
      To be clear, when when the battery is charged with the balance plug on, it is balance charging.
