Not bad for a $30 tool. I agree with you about the file and upgrading the steel. With your confusion about the weight I'm surprised you didn't weigh it in the sheath with the bits. I'm guessing that's how they're getting that higher weight.
As a person who is a sailor, or Merchant Marine I like the fact that someone is starting to target gear towards us, especially since our occupations take up 1/5 of the job force of america. This would be a good deck hand tool, in my opinion. Cheap enough that you won't miss if loss or stolen. Also, when I was on deck I used needle nose way more often because of cotter pins, shackles, just rigging gear in general. The other assortment are also tools I could see using for deck work. But in my opinion, it needs a whistle. I don't use it often but I have done so with my own tool to get peoples attention in loud areas or to silence 20 or more people during drills or general confusion.
Very cool, thank you for sharing this information. I wasn't sure if this was just the name of the multitool, I'm happy it has a specific tool set aimed for sailors.
Plus the whistle I would add a shackle key and a marlin spike. Then make the whole thing in H2 or other great stainless steel and this would be a tool you can have on your boat forever.
I bought the Sailor Pro a few werks ago, because I'm a sailor. I was disappointed one of the springs that keeps the plier handle from flopping around broke almost immediately from simply opening it a few times. It changes the feel of the pliers that you liked. I did figure out how to open the knife one handed. Open the lever with your thumb and then push open the blade with your index finger. The likely reason for the doubke lock is sailors are sometimes contorting themselves or moving quickly and it's important for tools to not open accidentally. I don't know why they didn't just make them inside open, but a one hand open knife is important for sailors and is considered important for safety. One unique feature is the marlinspike on the end of the file. You use it to untie knots. Its not good because the point needed to be sharp and the edges rounded but a Dremel fixed that.
*As a collector of multitools with marlin spikes, I don't know why this was called the "Sailor Pro." No marlin spike at all. It should not have been named the "Sailor Pro." You can see my collection of multitools with marlin spikes. I was going to get this one when I thought the marlin spike was in it. It's a nice tool but no marlin spike. That locking part I'm not to fond of either. Reminds me of one of the Gerbers. Thanks for showcasing this.* 👊
The total weight includes the bits and adapter. 420 is acceptable for saltwater use if hardened to 56. For terrestrial use then D2 would be a better budget steel. I still like the entry level Leatherman better though. It is almost there so there is hope.
For your head-to-head comparison of multitools, how about starting with a bunch of everyday tasks you might encounter while out and about: tighten the leg screws on a lunchroom table at work, open taped-up packages, open that stinkin plastic packaging around electronics which tear up your hands no matter what you do, file down a burr on your desk drawer, clean crud from under your fingernails, and so on. Evaluate on whether it does the job and whether it's convenient to do the job. Next, systematically use every tool on the device, even if you have to contrive a circumstance where it would be needed. Next, test to destruction or damage: Will the phillips head driver round off if you try to loosen a really stuck bolt? How many inches of trimetal can can the knife blade cut before it's too dull to cut paper? Do the scissors loosen if you cut something tough 100 times? I can see you not wanting to destroy all of your tools, but I think that that would be the most useful of the tests. I've bought any number of multitools over the years and several of them worked fine at first but wore out or broke unacceptably quickly. (It's not that I'm especially destructive. I've been using my first Craftsman hand tools for 35 years and they're still in good shape.)
I must say i appreciate the locking because on some cheap multitools i 've seen that the unfolding tools get loose over time and as you work the pliers, scissors or knife blade pop out.
bailing wire would make a good standard for the wire cutters when you do the inexpensive multitool shoot out. You do wonder how much it would add to the price for these tools to use a better grade of steel.
Wow, impressive. This might be my first multitool. Looks like a nice kit without having to buy additional accessories. Agree that the two-handed operation is very annoying, and also agree that if you can't do the file well, don't bother, but overall I think this would be lovely to have in the glovebox.
Great review, Thanks! I think ALL of these tools need to ditch the Phillips design for Japanese Industrial Standard (aka JIS). JIS isn't [as] cam-out prone.
8:22 More than Leatherman gives you. I've finally broken down and decided to get a Surge for my EDC. My cheapies will always be useful though. After all is said and done I'm looking at around 250 bucks. Surge, bit driver kit, pocket clip, couple other bits and bobs.
Honestly for me a task I always want to see is cutting ethernet cable. In my experience the tiny wires inside usually get chewed up instead of nicely cut on multitools
pleasantly surprised by nextool lately! a budget multitool gauntlet would be amazing! checking the quality of Philips as well as flats(they always suck somehow) also the saws can be a hit or miss ps: near the end i was screaming at the screen begging you to just throw the tool with the bits on the scale!
Great tool for the price - actually well thought out. Glad the weight was wrong! The locking mechanism is frustrating but it's the steel made me cry. 420J2 is about same as 3Cr13 - just above butter knife. I know it's made to a certain price point but in 420HC this would really rock. Sharp blades all.
Not bad for a $30 dollar tool. Especially given the european market, it's good to see more locked-closed tools. I actually quite like that as a feature.
That locking the outside blades is a really good idea I have one of the first models of the leatherman and I’ve gotten hurt many times trying to use the pliers and the blades popped out and cut my hands I liked the tool but quit carrying it because of the knife blades popping out they would lock open but they wouldn’t stay closed. And the lock looks a lot better than most of the others I have which are very hard to get blades and tools out and have to open other tools to unlock the ones out it’s nice to have a tool that you can use if you want a switchblade Knife then get one but they’re not any good as pliers or knife’s
Interesting little tool and impressive it comes with the bits and sheath. I just got a Victorinox Super Tinker today, I know it doesn't have the pliers (I carry Knipex for this), but it's a near perfect multi tool in my eyes. I'll have an unboxing video up on that soon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this tool, great overview.
Great with the Knipex Cobra XS, I carry those with my Climber sometimes. But then I was just so tempted by the inline driver and went for the Swisschamp as I'd tested whether it would fit into my 5th pocket (by putting my Climber and Hiker together in it) and it does...so now I carry that with the Knipex Cobra XS and a Spyderco Urban. Overkill perhaps? But it's all surprisingly pocketable (the Knipex sit deep in my pocket in a leather slip, actually a Phillips case for an iPod Nano!) and gives me a load of capability.
Plus you can get the Super Tinker and a Knipex Cobra XS for just under 50 quid which is what you'd pay for a LM Squirt PS4 (if you can find one) so it's a no brainer.
Just received a used Squirt this morning that I ordered after all of your recent videos on the smaller multi-tools, especially the squirt. In addition to the MUTT, which you recommended to me as a shooter, I’m a very pleased with the Squirt.
I really like spring loaded pliers so I chose the Roxon Phantom but I think I could have gotten by with the Flash. My question for you is, have you seen a really good flashlight on a knife combo? Most times the flashlight is very small and unusable.
For almost the last ten years of my job as an electronic technician, I used a $10 Winchester multi-tool that came with a couple of smaller tools and a carrying pouch. I have been retired for 14 years and still carry it with me on my belt every day. It doesn't lock open or closed, so I guess I am used to easy access. This Nextool looks like a much better tool. I couldn't tell by your demo, but did the tools lock in the open position? If so, I really would have preferred it.
I'd say run some scissors tests and testing the Phillips against some different woods and screws. Also a test on the blades to see how long before they are in need of a sharpening.
100% worth doing a gauntlet for the budget tools. Maybe pick up a roxon Storm to compare to the Phantom, since I heard the new scissors are not as good as the Storm ones.
From what I have seen online 420 J2 Stainless steel has a hardness of about HRC 54 For a knife blade that`s not hard enough for me, HRC 59 - 61 Is more what I prefer
Change the locking mechanism so that once you slide it down, it stays free until you open a tool. The tool locks into place, so you have to unlock it again to close it. It locks closed until you free it, which you can do immediately if you choose.
I don't have a problem with the fact that it's a two-handed tool. My problem is that that thumb stud is clearly a one hand opening feature. It makes no sense that they put a one hand opening feature on a tool that requires you to hold a button down to unlock the tools.

I would take the Bibury 21 function because of the locking bit driver with no sleeve! Sleeves all have too much play. As far as the price point, I agree with the camp that says the ratio of what you get for the price should be important... I don't agree with the somewhat patronizing sounding "Its ok for a 30 dollar tool" statement. I have carbon steel knives that rust if I look at them the wrong way lol, and I have seen soft steel benefit by grabbing a nut where other tools could not.

it looks and acts like a $30 multitool. Yes I think all the lower priced multitools should go through and everyday type scenario and use. They don't want to use better steel because they bank on selling in mass.
Would love a Under $50 Multi-Tool Shoot Out Vid! What's your Favorite Multi-Tool Under $50? After watching the video this Nextool just doesn't do it for me, I picked up the Costco Exclusive Leatherman Bolster for $40. I've also heard good things & been thinking about the Walmart Ozark Trail Multiforce for like $45.
Good day friend, do you still need the sailor pro? we have no inventory on FBA warehouse, if you need this, we can add the inventory for you and would shipping from China directly.
I have a question: Can I disassemble the tools and remove the pin for the double locking mechanism. It is a deal breaker for me and I would be so happy if I can operate it with just one hand. Did you tried this? Let me know, please! :)
it appears to be a copy of the Gerber Strata. Gerber, being a part German company, designed the strata to be German legal. It appears to be mostly discontinued, probably due to limited marketability. It's not an exact copy, but the general shape and locking mecahnism is pretty close. The gerber tool set has a pair of scissors vs the serrated blade. I don't own a next tool but the videos of them look fairly unappealing to me.
I still can't get over the fact that none of these Chinese companies know how to offer / design a multitool that isn't oversized. All those leatherman wave copies like the ozark trail are huge and oversized.
Generally a pretty good pocket tool! I disagree with you on the double lock system! Although a bit incovenient the system provides some safety for the user! As locking the blades into position this protects you from cutting your self and keeps the other tools stored safely so they don't come loose and cause the user harm while using the tool. The name isn't right without the marlin spike but overall it's a handi tool. I have had many multi tools and some are down right dangerously and should nevertheless have been sold or produced!
This isa $30 multi tool. 420 steel is perfectly acceptable, as a knife steel, and does hold an edge well, along with easy of sharpening. People now lambast the steel, because of all the newer budget steel. Read up of 420 steel. Going D2 would raise the price. As an American, I would not buy any knife with a lock keeping it closed. A decent ball would do the job just fine and the cost of the lock, should be equal to the cost of a detent ball. If the file and saw are not good, I also will not buy the tool. You never realize how much you need a stupid file, until you have a crappy one. Same with a saw. As far as the torture test, do ranch work and ship work; as the tests. It’s not over the top work, but if the tool can do that type of work and survive, it’s great. I have a leather an and repair barb wire fencing, file the barb wire, sawed off branches of trees growing it no fences, used the pliers as nail pry, etc. If this tool survived, I’d buy these as EDC starter tools for the young men (20-35) that I work with, who don’t know what EDC means (trust me, there are tons). They can move to Leatherman, if they feel the need, in the future.
What?! No marlin spike on a tool called a "Sailor Pro." Nah, I'll pass! Thanks for showcasing it. 👊

it looks and acts like a $30 multitool. Yes I think all the lower priced multitools should go through and everyday type scenario and use. They don't want to use better steel because they bank on selling in mass.
Weight is including the extra bits and sheath?
Regarding German laws, you can't get a better Mt than the Swisstool, even without still prefer it to Leatherman(look cool, lack refinement)
So what do you feel is the best multi tool under $50?
Is this better than the roxon phantom?
Hmm, value? Or just best overall?
@@maxlvledc fair question lol. I guess both?
I was quite interested on this one but I preferred the black knight over it.
For weight could be the total with the case and tools
Yes you should do the video
Just FYI....
Amazon link to featured tool does
not go to the same tool for sale.
Exact design discontinued ? ? ?
May be sold out
Would love a Under $50 Multi-Tool Shoot Out Vid!
Yep, multiforce is still #1 under $50 most likely.
the link is not going to Nextool Sailor pro. is it no longer available?
I don't own a next tool but the videos of them look fairly unappealing to me.
scissors .. very impressive
Good day friends, NexTool would refine this lock design for better usage. Lets looking forward to the upgrade.
Damn that locking mechanism!!, otherwise a really good unit 👌
Good day friends, NexTool would refine this lock design for more convenient usage. Lets looking forward to the upgrade.
Might get a few as gifts.
when it's closed, it looks like a high tech coffin 😂
Honestly, would you really recommend this multiOOL at $30?
Good question...it's better than many..but I think there are 4-5 that are better.
Maybe they weighed it in the pouch?
What is the knife you use in unboxing on this video
It was a vosteed racoon
@@maxlvledc with a Wharncliffe blade? Also were there custom scales on it?
That knife looks cool, you dona review of it?
uh but that's perfect for Germany, by law we're not allowed to carry single-handed opening Lockblades (§42a WaffG) :)
Sounds like something I could throw in my kayak.
Looks like they dont sell this anymore
Likely weighed the multi tool with the case.
What about Ganzo pliers multi tools?
Never impressed me.
please put the scale away, thanks. nice video.
Bought the mini to replace my squirt, very happy!
Good choice, I believe mini sailor would not let you donwn.
Try Ganzo 202b multitool
Thanks from Germany for the two handed Info. And we dont like it to.
My Gerber and my Leatherman both broke several tools, I no longer trust multitools.
