I want to thank the makers of the 1-1 and 1-2 Super Worlds for the inspiration, my playtesters for helping me refine the levels, and of course Dave for the excellent playing and Chris for condensing the experience to the essential highlights. I am beyond pleased with how this playthrough went, I could not have scripted a better scenario. The victories are satisfying and the failures are so comedically timed! In honor of this playthrough reaching youtube, I have uploaded 6 more 5-2 levels just now! They may not be as refined, but I hope you will enjoy those as well. I promised developer commentary in the comments, so I'll make a reply here as soon as I've got something typed up.
The first few levels require the most commentary. 0:58 In SMB1, 5-2's pipes are white! I suspect that's because the color palette swap that makes the trees all white and gray also applies to the pipes. One could argue that it'd be in the spirit of the intent of the original for me to create this remake in the Snow theme, but I'd argue it's more important to have the correct music. There's a lot else that SMB1 does that you can't adapt perfectly. SMB1 has both the secret coin heaven bonus stage at the top of the beanstalk as well as the underwater subworld in the pipes. The infinitely looping elevator lifts and randomly spawning fish of the water section can't be perfectly recreated either, nor the lack of re-entry. I toyed with the idea of having some levels feature the the sky section, but ultimately I decided that uniformity was more important and that as often as possible I wanted to avoid having a vertical scroll in the main world to retain the feel of the original. But I left the vine there and an applause sfx to allude to its role in SMB1. 2:22 It was extremely important to me to get this quiz level in early. I wanted to make a statement that this Super World would be doing things you haven't seen in previous SMB1 remakes, and that it's something that only works because of the level's relative obscurity. It also functions as a bit of a tutorial. If you didn't know about the secret star by the hammer bros, this level will point it out. In the trailer I made for this Super World I mention that the levels that are indicated with a hammer bro are optional and generally harder. There's nowhere else I could put that information in-game, but the quiz level is one of those. 7:06 The inverted level also functions as a tutorial of sorts, because up until that point nothing has forced you to enter the subworld. Or, you might have used the underwater passage every time and not seen the topside part. This level forces you to go through both. 9:23 While straightforward, World 1 needed at least one level that wasn't in SMB1 style to set the expectations from here on that things will be remixed. 14:26 As I learned much too late in the process of making this, you can't actually make vertical levels as long as horizontal ones. Hence I had to use the doors to extend the segment and get it all in there. 19:56 The bean burrito is an optional level :) While we now understand the term to mean a level that requires a precise but repetitive input for a very long time, the specific input you did in Bean Burrito 2 (where the term stuck) was spinjumping on a spiny. Implementing that was as close I could get without dramatically altering the layout of the level. 27:30 This level was inspired by an SMM1 level with the Lil Mac amiibo costume and invisible blocks constantly over your head because of how poor Mac's aerial recovery is in Smash Bros. I am happy with how well I could make that format work within the 5-2 framework.
Wow! Hopefully whoever is in charge of DGR's youtube account pins this (after verifying you as the creator). You did an absolutely phenomenal job with the level design. You even made level types that are often annoying actually super fun. A vine ride level, an underwater level, an escort mission, and even an upside down level, were all sooo good! When I saw this video title, I thought it might be good, so before watching this, I looked up videos of SMB1 level 5-2 on the NES with the different routes. What a great level to do this with! It seems like a super underrated level from SMB1, with much more interesting elements than anything in 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, or 1-4, etc.

I really like the idea of remixing levels like this. Imagine a whole game like SMB3 or SMW but each level has its own twist, boss fights and all. That would be sick.
Finally another creative x-x world. The guy who did the 1-3 levels was a genius, but those 1-2 and 1-4 worlds were kind of weak imo. This 5-2 world looks great!

That 'test your memory' stage is really smart, considering that the creator is picking up not-so-common stage to expand the idea. I can see that as a common thing if people wanted to do it on other stages, especially on world 7.
This is really a great one! Not many people even play 5-2! It’s not an overly long level but interesting. These are fantastic level ideas! To include the water part! Just wonderful!

This was fun to watch, even with the annoying scrolling chat. I still hope the scrolling goes away - we can read chat without it, and the scrolling just pulls the eye over there.
They probably chose 5-2 because it’s one of the 10 levels you have to complete for the world record speedrun. 1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 4-2. 5-1, 5-2, 8-1, 8-2, 8-3, 8-4. Those are probably the most played original SMB levels of the past decade. Major time saves in 4-2 and 5-2 have resulted in the time inching further and further below 5 minutes. It’s insane what some of the best runners can do.
This ought to be interesting, considering there are several versions of world 5-2: Super Mario Bros., The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 3, New Super Mario Bros., etc.
Okay I was planning on watching this. But I find it funny that I watched the music video to fly by Nikki Minaj ft Rhianna because it helped me through my day today and this was under the people who also watched category.

the minor thing I noticed was if you die you can see where others died too and as such you only really need 2 tries if you dont remember
