The Linda Donaldson 'East Lancashire Ripper' murder has never been solved - the killer has been potentially linked to a number of other murders. In 1996, the police carried out 'Operation Enigma' at the unsolved murders of over 200 sex workers and vulnerable women in the 80s and 90s. Police believed that there were probably at least two serial killers who were at work at the time. Two names were given, the first being David Smith who was convicted of killing a Paddington sex worker in 1999 but is suspected of many more - he was a suspect in Linda's murder and had been questioned by police about it. The second name was Alun Kyte. He was convicted of two murders, but was suspected of killing many more female sex workers, including the crimewatch case of Yvonne Coley in 1984. He was in the news recently as he has also has just been convicted of the serious physical and sexual abuse of a boy over an extended period in the late 1980s. The boy that Kyte abused was a neighbour, and he made threats against the boy's family if he told anyone.

If Robert Smith was spun a line by Lambert, fair enough, but if he’d covered for lambert, even though lambert was a convicted child molester, there would have to be some serious questions raised on what Lambert had over Smith. I live in this area & it doesn't really feature in the local rags or what is left of them these days-they have covered other unsolved murders from the past but I don't recall anything on this one. Wonder if he had tried muscling in on the local drug scene, a decade ago a guy said to be involved in drug dealing was shot dead at his home near Margate after a night out in the area-also unsolved & despite his wacky fathers best efforts Crimewatch refused to do a segment. Maybe the threat from the heavies was to stop selling his crap at their clubs? Although it seems whatever it was he was given a good pasting for that & the DCI indicates that was 1986.
I can remember CS gas was quite the thing here in the late 1980's/early 1990's-my brother was at a pub gig where somebody threw it in the room, he even had the videotape of it which I saw.

The James Gibson murder is illustrative of what was happening in the crime world of the 1980s. Gibson was part of the armed robbery gang featured in a previous episode who robbed a branch of NatWest. As regular Crimewatch viewers will know, those violent armed robberies, often involving kidnap, had become more and more common in the 80s. These gangs were often at the epicentre of a lot of other other crime and so prison sentences were hugely increased. That, and improvements in technology, subsequently made arned robbery significantly more difficult/ not worth it and many of the gangs then moved into drugs instead, forming the origin of a lot of drugs crime that still blights places like Liverpool. It's believed that James Gibson may have been shot to silence him. Murder amongst gang members was not uncommon.

Although it seems the case has been unofficially solved. The police believe that Lee's body is likely hidden in a grave in a local churchyard where a paedophile, William Lambert, was operating a youth club. They dug up a lot of the churchyard but weren't allowed to disturb the graves. Lee's dad has spoken recently about how he has accepted that Lambert very likely killed Lee.

@@olegenie1007 the case has been more or less unofficially solved. It wasn't anything to do with Sidney Cooke - lee was not the type of victim the Cooke gang preyed on at all (they focussed on vulnerable kids from chaotic families, usually younger than Lee). What seems to have happened is that lee was attending an unofficial youth club at a local church. One of the local grave diggers seems to have run it and was abusing a number of local girls there. The man was called William Lambert. Several women came forward to say they were abused by him as children. His own kids also spoke out, saying what a monster he was and how they believe he did it. If you want some further details, mark Williams Thomas, the man who exposed Jimmy saville, did an investigation into it in his podcast "The Detective". Lee Boxell's father has spoken out recently to say that he believes Lambert did it.

If any Met police officers look at this episode, maybe they could push for a cold case review of that shocking rape crime?
Those two black men may have committed other crimes and be on the national DNA data base.
It was a vile and shocking attack.

She'd had a terrible life. The type of drug addicts take always says something. Heroin is the drug of choice for people who've had deeply traumatic childhoods and suffered abuse. The effects of heroin are described as being 'like a warm hug from someone who loves you'. The perfect escape for someone trying to black out past traumas.
