You can understand how hard it is to bring such a number of big people together for some shows. Seems rehearsals take up more than a year (three songs a month) and then finally in one weekend maybe four or five shows. So no tour!!!! Ayreon shows thus are rare (every two year, in the town of Tilburg, Netherlands) but thank God there will be dvd's. The last show was in September 2023 and the dvd will be released in May. One song has already been released on TH-cam, The Sixth Extinction, and you will love that.

The cool thing about Ayreon is that all the albums sort of tie into the same story. 'The Source' (the album which this song is from) is technically the start of the story. It's about a race of humans that give control of their planet to a computer (the 'frame) to help solve an environmental catastrophe, but the computer determines that the best course of action is to eliminate the humans. Ten humans and the robot TH-1 escape the planet on the only interstellar ship they have (the 'Starblade') along with the ships crew and head to an ocean planet. The chemist creates a drug ('The Source', aka 'Liquid Eternity') that allows them to evolve into an 'aquatic race'. The drug also makes them basically immortal and allows them to communicate telepathically. The album ends with the survivors (ten plus the ships small crew) living on their new planet ('Planet Y') in relative peace, but in the final track we learn that TH-1 is becoming a new version of the 'frame deep in the ocean. The next album in the timeline, 01011001 ('Y') tells us how machines have now taken over this new planet, and the humans have basically merged with the machines are losing their emotions and sense of time. They now call themselves 'The Forever', since they are essentially ageless drones at this point. We also learn about how they seeded a comet with DNA and sent it to Earth, where it creates human life on our planet. The Forever believe they can live through us telepathically and that they may regain their emotions by doing so. Some of The Forever believe that we need to advance more quickly, and use their telepathy to give us medicine/technology, but this results in us advancing quicker than our morality can cope with. Eventually The Forever realize humanity is doomed and has to decide if they will give them the technology to reverse their past mistakes. Somewhere in the timeline sits the album 'The Electric Castle'From a summary by Arjen: "At the end of the journey those that successfully dealt with their personal demons find out that the voice belongs to an alien named 'Forever of the Stars', a member of an alien race living in a distant galaxy. These aliens created planet Earth and its people as an experiment so they could study, and hopefully one day experience emotions, as they themselves lost feelings eons ago." That's only three albums (less than half!) but I believe those three give you a solid foundation for how the story plays out. Also, I highly recommend any of the Electric Castle Live videos; They are just so fun to watch, plus John de Lancie ('Q' from Star Trek) plays the 'Forever of the Stars' character, which Arjen said he originally based on Q.

The cross connections in one of Arjen's projects is always fun. Floor for example has been working with Arjen long before Nightwish and of course Joost was in After Forever also and Ed filled in on drums for one of their tours. Joost also did the Christmas Metal Symphony for years and almost everyone who was anyone in European metal has been involved in that.

Arjen Lucassen seems to be a composer many seem to love to work with. On Wikipedia they have compiled a list of guest vocalists and musicians for the Ayreon project, which is only one of his projects. It contains the likes of a Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, or a Bruce Dickinson to name some of the more well known. For his Star One project he recently worked with Steve Vai.

Ayreon live performances are rare. They only occur over a couple of days every couple of years. My wife and I traveled to the Netherlands this past September for the live performance of the "01" album (full title is 01011001). Amazing show featuring a lot of the folks performing this song and many others.

This is one song from a sci-fi concept regarding computers/AI taking over and trying to eradicate humanity. As usual, a man who knows quality music and performances. The singers are all playing roles in the story. Think of it as a prog/metal Broadway play. Ayreon is a very unique project. Those are the Ayreon angels backup vocalists.

Arjen Lucassen is unique. He composes amazing metal prog rock for 30 years now. And man, it is sooo goooood. The guy writes a scifi story. And then the music based on that story. But he has no band. No problem. He is in high regard the world over by the top vocalists of prog and metal. So he invites up to 25 absolute amazing vocalists the world over from Australia to North America, you name it. And they are all honoured to be asked. They love to participate and turn these projects into one big party. No envy, no look at me attitude. Nothing like that. Instead they love each others performance and turn these events into 1+1=3. It radiates from the podium. He asks the musicians that form a group for these events and picks them well. No doubt about that. The music is put on DVD . Once in a while they do live performances. You can imagine how difficult it can be to organise this. All those professionals putting this in their agenda's. But when they do the concerts are sold out in five minutes. The public consists of more then 60 nationalities the world over. People fly from Australia to South and North America etc just to witness this. And with good reasons. Witnessing this is a life changing event. Nothing compares to it
Please watch "the Sixth Extinction" from the 2023 Life beneath the waves 01011001 live concert in Tilburg. It is only recently put on the internet as a preview for the upcoming DVD. I witnessed that concert. My goosebumps are there to stay. Be sure to watch not the bootleg but the official recording by Arjen Lucassen... He is the very tall guy in red. You'll love it

Well, you did I think Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down, and this song is from the same album. Michael Mills, the lead singer, did the binary part on that other song 🙂 On that album, the 11 vocalists perform different roles (so you may call it a metal prog opera), You did not see Arjen Anthony Lucassen, the brain behind Ayreon, in this video. His live performances are rare.

A pleasant surprise! I thought you might find this one vocally crowded (like The Day That The World Breaks Down), which would've been understandable. Heck, this performance actually has fewer (lead) vocalists than the studio version.
I've always really liked that main guitar/keyboard melody. I remember initially thinking it would be cool if the rhythm stayed more straightforward underneath, with that fast triplet feel, but the syncopated part is a cool twist.

This song is from Ayreon ninth studio album "The Source", prequel to album "01011001" . And the master behind it all (arrangement, lyrics etc, etc...)is the tall Space Hippie that uploaded this video ! Our beloved Arjen Anthony Lucassen !!! The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.
Each Ayreon album tells a different story, but all, with the exceptions of Actual Fantasy, The Theory of Everything, and Transitus, take place in the same fictional, science fiction universe; additionally, Lucassen's solo album Lost in the New Real is also set in the Ayreon universe. Ayreon's music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in rock music mixed with instruments more native to folk and classical music. Lucassen writes the music and the lyrics, sings and plays most of the instruments on all of the Ayreon albums, alongside many guest musicians. His most regular collaborator is drummer Ed Warby.
This DVD is awesome , absolute fire performance by everyone 🤘🔥🤘. And to see Floor with her sister Irene ( one of the backup singers , close to the drums ) on the same stage , is absolutely magical 🥰.
