As for who writes the songs, usually Arjen writes the music and lyrics and chooses which singers and musicians to invite for the recording. Sometimes his girlfriend helps with the lyrics.

I'd argue the Ayreon Universe show, where this and Everybody Dies are from, is the best one to start. The composing is almost exclusively done by Arjen, but for the live shows Joost (the keybord player) does a lot of the musical production and adaption to play Arjen's music live. And considering that these albums were not written with live performances in mind, they do a amazing job in adopting the music to the live setting. The concert for Into The Electric Castle And Other Tales live is cool too, because they play a whole album. But for a first overview I think the Universe show is better.

In case no one has mentioned it Arjen has another series of albums under the band name Starone (Star One?). All the lyrics for the songs released for this project are inspired by sci-fi movies/shows. It's the same overall concept where Arjen writes the music and songs and pulls in guest musicians and vocalists to record and perform. Think of Arjen being the rabbit hole and Ayreon and Starone being 2 different branches.
I usually don't join premieres, but If you are going to watch Ayreon, I will make an exception for you. ;-). Ayreon is great and an absolute joy to watch and listen to. I have voted. See you in the premiere!

Both singers are great, but imo the musicians don't get enough credit. I like the guitarist obviously enjoying his job as well as cello/ flute and violin players in this rock project.
I voted for The Warning but i will be there for Ayreon if you do it when im not at work. I've been meaning to dive deeper into his stuff since i heard "the day that the world breaks down" but hiss albums are so long and i find that a bit off putting.
