Wes Studi’s performance as Magua is one of the most underrated and nuanced villains in film history. He doesn’t chew scenery, or behave erratically. He’s patient, observant, intelligent, even sympathetic once he lays out his backstory. And while he doesn’t shrink from brutality, the movie makes it clear he’s not a monster. Just a man shaped by a brutal environment.
#detroitenergy
I don't see him as the villain he's just the antagonist virtually no Native watching this sees it that way his village was burned down by the British this was how warfare was back then
Easily Wes' best performance. His hatred is so visceral, but once the 'grey hair' is dead and the matter is settled by the Huron elder, he has this calmness - even when facing his death. It's very nuanced. Everyone in Last of the Mohicans is fantastic.
@@northeastokwari1889 I definitely don't see him as a villain either. Antagonist sure. His only aspect approaching villain is letting himself lose who he is to the people who took everything else from him. Even then... I sympathize, not condemn.
His look of sheer incomprehension, followed by dismissal, when Alice jumps after Uncas is what really nails it for me. Top notch acting, and nary a word spoken.
I totally agree. Stunning performance.
Being lakota myself, movies like Last of the Mohicans and Dances with Wolves will always be in my most favorite films of all time. I love Daniel Day lewis & always wished Russell Means and Eric Schweig had been in more stuff. Also that music man... 😩 There are no words.
Russell Means was the real shit in terms of being one of the founders of the Native American Rights movement in the 60s and 70s. My uncle knew some of A.I.M. guys from just after the Wounded Knee stuff.
Eric Schweig. ❤
That was so funny when you said, “when I get these 16 layers of clothes off, I’m gonna get that ass.” I laughed for 10 minutes straight…
Same!!
I’ll always laugh at that part! 😂
Sooo funny
LOL they didn't call those old romance novels "bodice rippers" for nothing
One of the best soundtracks ever...that actually matches the acting and beauty of this film.
O yeah 👍
Michael Mann movies always have great soundtracks.
Agreed.
35:56 Chingachgook could have ended Magua in 1 or 2 moves. He wanted dude to suffer the pain of being dismantled. He wanted Magua to reflect on his life and bad decisions while he broke him down.
Chingachgook grief in that moment was palpable.
The silent scream as he watches Uncas die is amazing acting.
"Silk...tight weave..40 more yards" refers to the patch that seals the ball and powder in the barrel. Greased linen was normally used but silk was markedly superior at providing a gas seal. The effective range of the Long Rifle was about 300 yards, so adding 12% more range was significant.
Nathaniel was able to walk into the Huron camp under the Wampum belt as a flag of truce. He could not make any resistance to any of the assaults from tribe members or they could (and would) kill him.
If he can take the abuse, he gets a hearing and(usually) safe passage out. You had to be DEAD serious to attempt this...and obviously swinging huge balls.
Good movie! "I WILL FIND YOU!!!" D.D.Lewis is such a versatile actor. I could barely recognize him in Gangs of New York. :D
“ I will find you. You do whatever you have to to stay alive because I will find you.”
34:49 Alice has severe PTSD throughout this film. Everyone was just pushing and dragging her along like she had no will of her own. But in the end when faced with a life as Magua’s slave or death, she made her final decision. She joined Uncas.
Even more tragic because if she had just held on, Chingachgook would have saved her and taken care of her to honor his son's love.
I think she was just done at that point@@LordVolkov
That scene is my favorite of the whole movie. Heartbreaking
It wasn't called ptsd she had depression
I think is more like she's *experiencing* traumatic stress throughout the movie, and is probably in shock by the end. Poor Alice never reached the "Post" part of PTSD.
Incas and Alice’s love story is something many of us fans of this epic movie want told. From the beginning. You see them, little moments, that let you know. Alice’s asks Duncan in the beginning “have you seen the red man”
When they first show up, uncas grabs Alice’s arms. In the darkness in the buriel ground. Uncas puts his gun down and pulls Alice close to protect and comfort her. The moment he steps into the light and is watching her intently as she goes up the falls. At the fort, she’s walking with him.
There is an actual live scene between her and Uncas in the script. That never made it on screen. She jumped because she didn’t want to live without him.
It’s their story that grabs my heart.
The love scene was in the original script but was never shot because Jodhi May was sixteen and her mother refused.
I'm glad it wasn't put in but I wish they'd had more of a story.
While I haven't read the book, I don't expect it elaborates too much on Uncas/Alice because it's focused on Hawkeye.
I find their understated love story very beautiful. Uncas isn't a loud or showy man, so his love is also quiet and secret. But Alice feels it and responds in kind. It makes their tragic end even moreso 😭😭😭
I like through various clues the director left throughout the film we can conclude this was a relationship. Really great filmmaking.
@@LordVolkov Hate to break it to you, but Alice and Uncas don't have any kind of love story in the book. It's Alice and Duncan.
@@71lizgoeshardt Figures. James Fenimore Cooper and his racism 😬
The mountains scenes were filmed here in Chimney Rock, NC! It's absolutely beautiful here on the Blue Ridge Parkway!
LOVE this movie! And one of the absolute best soundtracks ever made! Duncan’s redemption arc… “Did you tell him?” “Yes.” What a moment. 🥺
“My compliments sir, take her and get out!”
Without giving away any spoilers, one of my favorite parts of this movie is a section of the movie were there is so much happening and you are so involved in the plot as it unfolds that you don’t realize that no one‘s spoken a word for 10 minutes. The scene is shot and executed so precisely and so powerfully, no words are needed.
Reminds me exactly of the ending of Thief..
The music though!
24:46 comment 24:50 -Ernie Moore Jr.
The ending sequence? Yeah its epic!! I've been hiking on that trail many times
👏🏽 one of my favorite movies ever!
I cried when Uncas and Alice died. Uncas was my favorite character. He was so chill, kind, smart and compassionate but took care of business when he needed to. And poor Alice! Her PTSD went into overdrive and Uncas was the only one who could comfort her after they met.
Jay when you said “Aye they legit sniff the dirt dudes” I immediately thought about Aragorn and Legolas!
Happy Birthday Caleb!! 🎂🎁🎈🎉 My son’s name is Caleb! 🤗
Uncas & Alice one of the best cinematic love stories in the past 40 years. ♥
@@nataliefaust7959And it’s more endearing because the only time you see them embracing is when Uncas stopped Alice from jumping off the waterfall. It was subtle, not intense like Nathaniel and Cora. And he didn’t even have to say anything to his father when he went to try and save her (although I think his father should have gone with him).
@@joellenglass2344 True, but Uncas went to slay the dragon and rescue his lady! I wish they had shown more of those two together. I did hear from someone that the braid in Alice's hair that was not there before the waterfall scene but was there after, was put in her hair by Uncas as a sign of commitment.
Oh yeah, Magua is _TOTALLY_ about that action!
What a stellar performance from Wes Studi. loved him ever since
Wes Studi is for real. Whatever he's in I'm a fan of, even Deep Rising and Mystery Men
“He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions.”
Always worth mentioning that the actress who played the younger sister Alice also played the Queen in the Witcher.
She certainly wasn’t frail and scared in that Witcher role
When I started the Witcher I was like "oh wait it's Alice!" Lol!!
@@michelea3366 I didn’t make the connection at all until I saw the credits
Queen Calanthe? Omg
She was also the witch in Game Of Thrones that gave Cersei the prophecy about her children. She's in a lot of really good period pies.
33:44 Uncas was so danged brave in this moment. He knew he was dying and had lost. But that warrior spirit made him get back up and go out standing. So sad and admirable.
Say what you will about Magua, he at least let him get back up on his feet to die like a warrior.
@@hisdudeness8328Magua also faces his death with dignity. He meets Chingachgook face to face.
Duncan made a comeback in the honor department by convincing the Huron chief to burn him instead of Cora or Natty (DD-Lewis).
@@hisdudeness8328 True that. Even enemies can show respect
He called Magua the "Captain of the Detroit Squad" - that is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile!🤣
The gorgeous scenery is from The Great Smokey Mountains in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. The song that you loved (and I love it too) is heavily based on a fiddle tune written in 1990 by Dougie MacLean, called The Gael (pronounced Gale). Daniel Day Lewis is masterful as always, and Wes Studi as Magua was phenomenal. As a native of Oklahoma, he represented the Cherokee Nation well in this movie, even though he portrayed a Huron. Wes Studi and Maurice Roeves, who played Colonel Munro, became lifelong friends after this movie, until Roeves death in 2020.
Dougie is still performing on a very regular schedule. He does a weekly podcast performance as well. I love his music. ❤️🏴❤️
Well 👏👏 You turned a very serious, war-torn, sad drama into a top-notch, high-brow comedy in many, many places. Didn't know that could be done. 🏆👏
Also: Happy Birthday 🎂 🎈 🎉 Caleb!
REPRESENT!!! I appreciate this one EOM!!. Being a Proud Native this is one of the biggest and best Native American Movie of all time! Much love for doing this on Indigenous people month!! 💪🏾
Maybe we shouldn't have any month..maybe no one should..all are something good to recognize or celebrate any time of a year..there should be no designated time ..how about a Holliday with celebrations about people treating each other right?
@@UncutSavage9858 Great! When that happens, people ignored by history can stop getting their own months. Until that utopia comes, however...
@@nataliefaust7959. Maybe so..
@@UncutSavage9858is up to you or everyone else to achieve that, no day will tell you how important certain people is
I was in college when this movie came out, and I listened to the soundtrack while writing papers for the next 3 years. Heartbreaking and gorgeous.
Happy birthday Caleb!
An absolute classic. Such an amazing movie, and still looks so good for 1992. The soundtrack is breath-taking, as well.
This in part featured my culture to, Kanienkehaka but the thing about the Mohicans is they're not actually extinct heir land was right by ours and we long since stopped warring with them when the O'serroni (Whites) came here. The word for African Americans is Rotihontsi by the way. The Huron tribe that Magua is from is also an Iroquois language speaking tribe and yeah they were bad ass. This movie did get a lot wrong but not as much as say, Dances With Wolves. In a lot of ways, a lot of of the myths about our culture came from this movie and Dances With Wolves,. But as far as this movie i laughed when Uncas said Joseph Brant (Kanienkehaka chief named Thayendanegea) owned acres yeah he did but not as a teenager which he was when this movie happened he was like 13 when he had his first battle against the French. He wouldn't have had all that at 13
Magua is an amazing movie antagonist and he goes f'ing hard. He's one of the few movie villains who has real justification for the actions he takes.
YES! Love love LOVE this movie.
Not sure what they were going for with Alice in the movie, but in the book she was just younger, more delicate and scared than Cora. She just sorta went into shock after going through all of that.
A lot of the characters vary considerably from the book, especially the British ones. Been ages since I read it, but IIRC Duncan is a far more honourable man in the book than he is in the film; pretty sure he doesn't die, either.
@@tommcewan7936 If I remember right, Duncan was into Alice and they both survived! Duncan was also from Virginia and not so clueless/anti colonial as in the movie.
The movie changed A LOT but I forgive it because it's just that amazing.
YES!! Been waiting for this one! Thanks JL for the reactions. I always look forward to them.
Famous novel. There have been numerous version going all the way back to the silent era.
One of my favorite movies along with Dances with Wolves!
Some of the chase scenes were filmed in and around North Carolina mountains :D
When you are talking about "I wouldn't've had time to say hello to nobody", the person who says "Hello boys" in that moment of the movie is Mark Baker, who helped teach the cast how to shoot muzzle loading rifles. He also worked with the cast of The Patriot. It is really weird to watch a movie you've sat down and watched before then realize "Oh, that's my next door neighbor".
One of the greatest epic films ever made. From the novel by James Fennimore Cooper
Hell yeah. Can't wait to see your reaction to this classic.
No doubt.... a legendary movie coupled with a legendary reactor 😄.
Happiest of birthday's to Caleb bruh 🙌🎂🎉
👌😎🇹🇹👍👍
I've always been a fan of this one. I'd also want to add Legends Of The Fall to the list, that one's been in my Top 5 since the first time I saw it. Definitely a must watch, imo, iffin' you haven't seen it before.
This movie is beautiful music wise and cinematography, when you add Danie Day Lewis performance, this is amazing master piece. Its mind blowing considering this book was written 1826.
The soundtrack to this film is one of my favorites.
One of Michael Mann's most powerful films and Daniel-Day Lewis, as usual, is absolutely mesmerizing in this.
Definitely watch Mann's 'Thief' (his neo-noir film debut masterwork) 'Manhunter' (the FIRST Hannibal Lecter film), 'Ali' (featuring the once great Will Smith's greatest performance), 'The Insider,' 'Collateral,' 'Public Enemies,' and.. well, everything else in his filmography!
Red Dragon > Manhunter, tbh.
@@I_AM_BAYTOR No way. Brett Ratner is a hack.
The Insider is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen. Fantastic, underrated movie.
@@lunacouer ABSOLUTELY! Russell Crowe gives, arguably, a performance that BESTS his performance in Gladiator.
@@hokemoseley2934 He may be. He still made the better movie of the two. Wasn't tough, just copy the original with a better cast and production.
Oh.... this is gonna be good. Buckle up my man....
Damn I love this movie. This and boy in the striped pajamas, make me blub 😭😅
Honestly haven't had the cohonas to watch that one yet. I've had it recommended to me since it first came out, but man...I just know it's going to obliterate my tiny black heart.
@@nattyboh2944It's cool. It won't traumatise, just be a bit of a blub fest. Well worth, dude. You'll be good 😎👍
@@chriswilletts3621Just so you know who I'm coming for if I end up weeping on the floor of my apartment, yeah?
@@nattyboh2944😂 Bless you. You've got this 💪
Oh no. The boy in the striped pajamas is a one time watch for me. I sobbed for like 2 hours after finishing that one. If EOM watches, I might have to skip. It’s been many years since I’ve seen it and I still remember my heart being ripped out and I wasn’t even a mother then. Now. I can’t even.
Daniel Day Lewis is the greatest actor to ever grace this planet. Change my mind. Also one of the all time great soundtracks!
The ending has to be some of the best 10 minutes ever filmed!
Seriously can’t wait for this one! Gonna watch it as soon as I can!! 😀😀😀
Ive been watching your channel for a while. Love the channel. Im a native. Both parents and if you ever meet a native American tell them you dig magua instant friends lol
Happy birthday to your godson
The beautiful mountain scenery in the chase scene near the end is a place you can visit. Chimney Rock State Park is probably about 30-40 mins. south of Asheville,NC, and you can hike up to the points where they filmed this. Further down mountain is a cliffside vistors center and the namesake rock you can walk on and catch an insane view.
The part when he was walking through the village towards the Chechem, when the villagers were attacking him, is a Native American ritual for outsiders. If they make it past the beating to The Great Sachem, they deserve the right to talk and are deemed brave
You would enjoy "Amadeus" for sure! 💙🎼🎵
Also "Apocalypto"
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Beautiful scenery, beautiful score, brutal violence. I think the waterfall, the forest glen ambush, and the ending on the mountainside are my favorite scenes. All the actors did such a wonderful job. Alice was PTSD'd as all hell being dragged around from battle to battle seeing dead bodies for the first time as a teenager.
Not just a teenager, but also a gently reared lady. This would have been an enormous shock to her senses!
This is certainly my favorite version of this story. I usually like the book better than any movie, but this novel is so hard, at least for me.
Magua - "...he got Detroit energy all day long, he might be the captain of the Detroit squad"" :D Thanks for the reaction on such a great film. Music, acting, locations its got it all
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Man. “once I get through this 16 layers of clothing “ 😂😂😂😂 I’m dying laughing. I love your work man. Made my day. ❤ and Happy Birthday Caleb! Your Godfather is a good one!
Jay, have you watch Apocalypto yet? If not you should!
This movie really bringing out the heathen in J!!! “If he eats his heart I’m watching!!” 😂
40:05 Hey Duncan laid down his life for Cora despite being friend zoned.
In a way it's honorable
There's a company called Cold Steel that makes a real battle club exactly like the one in this movie (the one that looks like a rifle with the spike on the back). It is truly badass and fully usable.
As a Lenni Lenape (the native Algonquin name of the Mohican or Delaware tribes) myself, I am happy to be a part of your cinema watching journey. Whenever someone asks me which Native American tribe I belong to and I tell them, 'Delaware' (to make it easy for them). Then, I point them to this movie or to the James Fennimore Cooper book series that the real 'Last of the Mohican' book is from.
"He said silk, another 40 yards, what do that mean?"
Okay, so... muskets of the time used what were called cartridges: shot and powder that had been individually wrapped at a previous time. This wrapping was most often paper. Other fabrics could be used and in this case, Nathaniel was using silk with the claim it could add forty yards to the range (which is considerable because we're talking normally about 100 yard range). I don't know if silk adding range has any basis in reality or if it's pure fiction. If anyone can speak to the veracity of it though, I'd love to know!
God, I love this movie. I cry non-stop from the moment Duncan is taken to be killed and the Promentory starts playing. Russell Means is such a bad-ass. So many amazing performances. I still have a low-key crush on Wes Studi. Thanks, J! ♥
One of the best soundtracks of all time. This is in my top 3 films of all time. Beautiful
10:40 He is adopted by the last Mohican. When he said his father (Mohican) warned him about people like you, he means the British of which he is biologically. This film is great
Most of the scenes that you found so beautiful were filmed in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. If you ever get the chance, drive south down the Blue Ridge Parkway. I promise you that you won’t regret it!
Oh, and Happy Birthday, Caleb!
The kiss- trevor jones is the song. Love the strings and drums. I agree with the others of alice and her ptsd. She was in shock also she would of been young and sheltered. Her sister Cora was fiesty. She was grown enough to see the goings on. Her sister was still childlike enough its was all to much.
Plus she jumped to die free. They said she was a slave a
dog. Nothing would ever be normal for her again. She would not of survived. Sadly she didnt have the strength.
Only good thing duncan did in the whole movie was sacrifice himself. I saw he really loved cora. But it was more of seeing her as a possession. She would controlled and miserable if not a widow soon. She went with the honourable one.
And Uncas, dont know the actors name, is gorgeous. Actually distracted me from DDL and this was the sexiest i think he ever looked😍
I saw this in the theater when it opened. Went straight out & bought the soundtrack...called the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce & requested their literature on the area where it was filmed...spent a couple of afternoons sitting in a pretty wooded area here in "Can-tuck-ee" thinking about the 18th century history of this part of the country & my own ancestry..English, Irish, Scandinavian & Cherokee.
I think this film has the most beautiful score...the most beautiful scenery..I love the history & the literature it's based on (read James Fenimore Cooper long ago). One of my favorite movies of all time. .
And Happy Birthday, Caleb!!💙💝
We all love your Godfather & by extension, send some of that love to you.
Best wishes for now & a wonderful future! Much love from western Kentucky...I mean Can-tuck-ee.
💙🎂🎉🎆💋🌞🥳🖖💝💫💙
"The Last of the Mohicans" did a really good job showing what warfare and military tactics were like during this time.
Hands down, one of the best movies of the 90s
Magua and Mike Tyson are the only guys I know of that made public declarations that they would eat someone's heart and kill their children and only Magua really put in the effort to get half way there.
" legit sniff the dirt dudes"... Fam that was priceless!🤣🤣😂
“Once I get these 16 layers of clothes off…..” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you look closely you can see a couple Bigfoots in the background.
One of my history teachers in high school did French and Indian War and Revolutionary War reenactments. So he had a little parts in this movie in basically all the battle scenes.
@JL Underrated gem I am glad you did a reaction for. Much appreciation. Thanks to the EOM staff and the patreons

The story was from a book written in 1826
Magua was indeed, "About that action."
I see these sights every day, I live where this was filmed. I'm glad you appreciate the scenery!
Daniel Day Lewis is such a great actor. You should watch My Left Foot & tell me he’s not disabled. Watch Gangs of New York and Lincoln.
I’ve recommended My Left Foot and Gangs of New York 😊 Especially My Left Foot though! Such a beautifully touching and impactful true story and the acting among not only Daniel Day Lewis but the actress that plays the mother is just heartwarmingly sublime ♥️
One of the greatest movies I have ever seen......
One of the best films of the 90's in my opinion and that last 10 minutes (from the Sachem meeting onwards) is just off the scale.
Great choice and great movie
Apocalypto is a good movie to watch too. 😊
It’s easy to throw around words like “masterpiece” but goddamn this movie is absolute 🔥
This is a great movie, a masterpiece
The Last of the Mohican soundtracks is quite possible one of the greatest of all time. Almost everything about this film is masterpiece level. My only complaint is that at some point the director did a slight "re-cut" of the film for DVD and it removed a few of Daniel Day Lewis's one liners, as well as a vocal track in the third act. The only way to find the original theatrical cut of the film (which is superior in my opinion) was for me to order an international release of the DVD on Region 2 from the UK.
