Flathead Fishing In Heavy Structure

- July 2022, fishing on the lower White River in Eastern Arkansas. Heavy current and thick cover offered prime fishing habitat for Flathead catfish. Getting them out of the thick logs and pile ups proved to be a difficult task, but we caught up a bunch of dinner plate flatties.

Lol I eat them flatheads from 3 to 60lbs they all get released into lake crisco around here!
I wasn’t needing a bunch after the spring we had lol. But I gave everything away to save room for flatheads. If I’m low on food they all get a front row in the freezer. Right now we’re fishing for fun unless something changes 😉

@@RaisedOutdoors wish it wasn’t so low this year. Been rough for pole fishing! Plus I bow fish backwater and last year was a good shoot over 3 months time this year we got a good 5 trips and water fell out
@@DallionShefferFishing you’re telling me! I held a tournament and teams split between White and Arkansas. I went to White and had no clue it was on a hard fall until it was too late. 3 weeks prior we were pole fishing 30lb blues. Lowest I’ve ever seen it this early

We got what we were after….water flatheads, but those few we lost were big and I can’t stop thinking about another try at them lol

Me and my boy been fishin where the Little Red intersects with the White. Ain't caught nothin but gar and them dang jumpin carp. Gonna keep tryin though. Love every minute of it!
@@SawSquatch85 It should pick up from now until November. Low water levels definitely make it a little tougher finding structure that is flooded. Around that 8-15 feet water depth is usually good this time of year. We usually fish a spot around 20- 30 minutes and without a good bite we bounce down river to next spot until we find a bite. Good luck!

@@SawSquatch85 we pretty much bounce all over and seldom fish the same spots repeatedly. From Casscoe South is where I’d focus. If you want to make a trip, anywhere from St Charles to the Mississippi has great structure and multiple water depths.

@@JohnBuerkle-c2g yup. That’s mostly what we use. Some live bluegill and shad or skipjack occasionally. Mostly cut bluegill in heavy cover

Yea we got in some good eaters for sure. The spawn here is over, we hung a few bigger ones that we couldn’t get out. The small ones were biting so quick nothing stood a chance lol

This is my cousins boat. It’s an Express boat, like a 15 or 16’ is best I know about it. It’s a few years old. I’ll see if I can get the information for you

Definitely enough for a fry! We left really happy with the results for a hot day, but determined to go back and get those big ones out of those lay downs

Some good looking fish. Never ate a flathead, what would you say an ideal size is for eating ?
I’m not sure there is an ideal size. It’s all in how they’re cleaned. But usually 3-12 lbs are what are the typical kept for eating.
@@RaisedOutdoors I ment, don't they get too fat once they are over a certain size?
@@BootTrackStories no not really, you hear that from people but blues and flatheads store their fat on the outside of the muscle which makes it easy to remove if you take time to do it. Most people are looking for a beautiful filet. We don’t eat filets from catfish. Every catfish has all red meat and fat removed and is cut into bite sized pieces. They all eat good. Channel cats are different….the excess fat is in the muscle which turns it yellow and is almost impossible to remove. Red meat and fat are what makes catfish taste muddy or fishy and is why many people do not like restaurant catfish

@@RaisedOutdoors I'm new to all this I'm gonna try and get my boys hooked on flats between locks 2 and 3. I was told there's not any flats to speak of in the white due to water being too cold. You have renewed my faith in it thank you for your channel
We have a limb line video of catching a 40lb flathead on the White River. Freaks come out at night is the video. The white river is a completely different water way in the north half of the state than the south part. North half might be a little tougher on big catfish

$3 for ice? That seems like a bit of a mark up. Do channel cats taste different than flatheads?
Flatheads have flakier meat. The channels in that river are really fatty at times. Channel cats store fat differently than flatheads and blues. Their meat turns yellow with fat and it’s difficult to clean out and can have a strong taste. Not like that everywhere. Flathead and blue cats store a layer of fat on outside of meat that can be trimmed off easily

@@RaisedOutdoors what were you using for bait?
Mostly fresh cut bluegill and green sunfish. We use shad or skipjack sometimes but the flatheads really like that cut bait. We use them live too
@@RaisedOutdoors Will Flat heads eat cut bait if it has been frozen? Im assuming they like it fresh. I run limb lines over here in South Georgia on the Flint river which makes lake Seminole. Im actually right at the mouth of the lake. BTW I run by these self serve ice machines that we have around here and pick up several of the 20 pound ice bags that people throw on the ground. I then take my time filling them from my fridge's ice maker and then put them in my stand up freezer for later.
