Stats can also be misleading, Joe Namath was a damn good quarterback during his era. First one to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. The reason why Namath has more interceptions than touchdowns because back then you could choke out a receiver before he has the chance to catch the ball. Bear Bryant said that Joe Namath was the greatest athlete he ever saw. As a freshmen at Alabama, Namath practiced with the punt return unit. He played the role of the punter because he could throw the ball 80+ yards with over 5 seconds of hang time. He was severely limited his entire pro career because of recurring knee injuries, he should be much higher on this list. He is responsible for higher wages for players and the successful merger of the AFL and NFL. If it was the Pro Football Hall of Stats then Cornelius Bennett, Cliff Branch, Roger Craig, and a host of other great players would be in.

Most people don't know that Joe didn't pass the ball one time during the forth quarter of Super Bowl III, and he called all the plays. You have to consider the rest of the team. If the offensive line is weak, what is the quarterback to do? He has to get rid of the ball quickly, and that is what Broadway Joe did. He got the most out of his playing time. Don Meredith was in a similar position. Even with Bob Hayes, the fastest man on Earth, Dandy Don often did not have enough time to get off a long pass to Bullet Bob. Hayes was often far downfield of the defenders, but stopped running, because Meredith got sacked or was forced out of the pocket.

In Super Bowl III, Namath threw for a very pedestrian 205 yards and zero touchdowns. He did not win the game, his defense, Matt Snell, and a terrible game by Earl Morrell did.

The Bears in 85' was a season to remember, but you wouldn't know unless you were around that time. Anybody young today can say, "Ah, it was the only Bears Superbowl what was so great about it?" That's you, that's pretty much how you sound. "Ah, it's Joe's only Superbowl so what?" Not understanding the impact still to this day that has effected and changed the game.

Bear Bryant said that Joe Namath was the greatest athlete he ever saw. As a freshmen at Alabama, Namath practiced with the punt return unit. He played the role of the punter because he could throw the ball 80+ yards with over 5 seconds of hang time. He was severely limited his entire pro career because of recurring knee injuries, he should be much higher on this list. He is responsible for higher wages for players and the successful merger of the AFL and NFL. If it was the Pro Football Hall of Stats then Cornelius Bennett, Cliff Branch, Roger Craig, and a host of other great players would be in.

@EOLA 05 He may have actually played the best single game a QB has ever played when he won that SB...the Colts Defense was awesome and he called all the correct plays. Sometimes you can't just look at the stats. Okay not #1 of all time...but only QB who had a better arm that I can ever remember was Dan Marino and maybe John Elway.

Most people don't know that Joe didn't pass the ball one time during the forth quarter of Super Bowl III, and he called all the plays. Does anyone doubt he could have passed for a few yard late in that game? He wasn't interested on looking good on the stat sheet, only in winning the game and whatever was the best way to do that, they couldn't stop the run, so he kept feeding the rock to Matt and Emerson. That is why he was the MVP of the game, it was the use of his brain that lead to that trophy.

Joe Namath, John Huarte(Notre Dame) and Cosmo Iacavazzi(Princeton) who played fullback but also quarterback in the option. 2-Houston Rockets picked Hall of Famer Akeem Olajuwon as 1st pick. To those who feel Joe is not a Hall of Famer; Joe changed the game, had perfect passing mechanics that influenced a generation of QBs to follow. If Jets lose to the Colts in Super Bowl 3, most of which Joe called from the line of scrimmage, would there be a Super Bowl 4 and what has practically become a national holiday celebrated annually? NFL was already suggesting that the AFL was inferior and games between the leagues were futile. Joe was also responsible for players finally making their worth, respectable contracts. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

You have to consider the rest of the team. If the offensive line is weak, what is the quarterback to do? He has to get rid of the ball quickly, and that is what Broadway Joe did. He got the most out of his playing time. Don Meredith was in a similar position. Even with Bob Hayes, the fastest man on Earth, Dandy Don often did not have enough time to get off a long pass to Bullet Bob. Hayes was often far downfield of the defenders, but stopped running, because Meredith got sacked or was forced out of the pocket.
