    Thanks for the great vid. What load would you recommend based upon your special testing procedure. I have a sense that the only .380 ACP round that would make the penetration requirement would be FMJ. Am I right? Many thanks....

    Years ago I saw a whole host of videos where they tested bullets on gel blocks with and without fabric or different obstacles such as drywall, car windows and so on. I remember that at the time .380 were considered under powered for defeting barriers reliably. Then Lehigh made the Xtreme Penetrator and suddenly the .380 were able to go through most obstacles reliably and started to over penetrate even though it left a nasty wound channel. That cause Lehigh to release the Xtreme Defense bullet which was about as good as the XP at penetrating obstacles, left a nastier wound channel and didn't over penetrate. What's the status on the XD and XP in these tests? From what *I remember they managed to cause really nasty wound channels even though both were made of massive copper and didn't deform like a hollow point bullet.
    What I also remember is that at the time the XP and later the XD was viewed by many as being suspect just because they didn't deform but relied on hydrodynamics and the bullet shape to cause the wound cavity. It didn't help that they were introduced to the market at about the same time as the Rippjaws or what they were called. Another copper bullet but made with a number of "teeth" designed to break off in the target. The teeth would cause their own very short and small wound channels, while the base of the bullet would continue straight forward. The manufacturer promissed a lot and they delivered very little in wound channels and not that much in penetration depth. So many thought that copper bullets were just a bad thing no matter who made them or how they looked.

    Looks good to me. It's my 2nd go to round in .380acp. I carry 100gr. fnfmj(tmc), penetration is not a concern. You would usually get less depth and more expansion with less clothes.

    After watching the whole video, I did enjoy the content and commentary. You should still try to edit it down to under 10 minutes. I’m a new bodyguard 2.0 user and evaluating self defense rounds. Will be trying out Federal HS-Deep and Hornady CD today. I’m loving the BG 2.0 but it does have feed issues with the wider, more open noses of some of the HP offerings. I had terrible FTF issues with Underwood XD-Platinum. I am hopeful for the Hornady CD round for feed but as your own tests illustrate, it may not be best choice for EDC. Interestingly, so far, I’m having very reliable feed and product performance out of Winchester white box flat nose fmj. After 800+ rounds, I’ve had one FTF and one dud primer. I’m about to settle on that ammo for my EDC and well as target ammo. It’s way cheaper than any of the HP or fluted rounds as well. Given some new gun roll out issues, which I have resolved, I’m still very happy with my BG 2.0 purchase.

    From what I'm hearing you want 18 inches. In a 380 you want fmj. Why are you bothering with testing hp 380? Nothing that expands is going to penetrate that far. Most expanding 9mm doesn't penetrate that far.

    • @131601
      @131601 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree totally, FMJ in 380 ! The rest are just a failed compromise….. go for the reliability and penetration on FMJ ….

    • @jgranger2002
      @jgranger2002 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can get hp 380 that penetrates 12" but not 18 plus inches. There is no real point in trying to find ammunition that, according to the fbi, overpenetrates. If you want to shoot a 300lb guy or a bear, just go with hard cast or ball.

      I test what people carry. Don't you want to know what the load you may stake your life will do? If nobody carried .380s, I wouldn't test 'em, but it is one of the most popular CCW calibers out there. Business is business. Thanks for watching.

      @@locacarnivore900Yes sir, they are carried a lot. My point was just use FMJ and be done. It feeds better in small guns and penetration is adequate. The others fail in either feed reliability, or penetration. I’m talking micro length barrels. You can’t get any round other than ball to consistently work in an LCP Max type pistol ( feeding and or expansion / penetration) Plus most people buy 20 high end rounds and try a mag or two and call it good. Reliability is primary in small 380 pistols, who cares what the bullet does if it double feeds or fails to feed. For me, FMJ in small 380 and 32 acp for obvious reasons. YMMV.

      Also 40, 45, 357. Most expanding ammunition is not designed to penetrate 18+ inches. This is especially true since the FBI set the maximum penetration at 18 inches, considering anything beyond that to be a fail.

    If carrying 380 I use XTP's, which doesn't open as much as FTX, so penetration is better. Split the difference so to speak. Years ago, there was a channel called Ammo Quest, where he tested lots of different rounds in multiple calibers, and he came to the same conclusion on 380.
