Brilliant review, and refreshing to see someone take the time to test this bike. The other reviewers seem to discount this bike, and exclude it from their reviews since it doesn't make 200BHP. To me the difference in HP between this and the other big naked's is irrelevant to riding on the road, and unusable to anyone short of a pro racer even on track. Thanks for covering it.

I suspect part of the issue is that for some the styling hasn't changed enough to define the Speed Triple as "new" and therefore merit a higher score.

I've had my Speed Triple for 3 years now -- older model than this one -- and I love it. Taken it all over Europe, just got back from giving it a 1000km spanking in Spain. Like you say, pegs are high and that means if you're in the saddle for several hours, your knees start to hurt. But that 's my only niggle and it's a tiny one. One other issue. It's a proper hooligan bike so pricey to insure if you live in London like me.

What an ace real world review Sir! Agree the blipper is sublime, faultless and really addictive. The quick shift up can be clunky lower down in the first 3 gears. I enjoy the quick take up on the clutch, with the perfect fuelling you can really crack her and leave the 4 wheel haulage far behind. So much adjustibility between the ohlins, brembos and throttle maps then there is the small attentions to detail like color matching the wheel weights, right angled tyre valves, braided lines and classy branding on the pegs. The Gentlemen's Hooligan!! Regards from Perth AU

This is an honest review which is reflected in a 2018 test when Michael Rutter posted better times on the same spec Speed Triple RS but a 2019 model at Donington than the KTM SuperDuke R, BMW S1000r, Honda FireBlade and MT10, even thought the Triumph was massively down on power. The 2017 Tuono Factory was miles ahead and beat the R1 showing that usability in the used environment is far more important than out right power.

Just bought my beautiful 2020 Speed Triple RS. Going in for its 800km service tomorrow. It really is an everyday sort of bike. Well balanced, sounds awesome, useable power and comfy on my daily 170km commute to work and back. I love it. Didn't`t get the quickshifter as I'm a bit old school. Test rode Speed Triple and Street Triple but the Speedie felt more my style. This review is a very accurate, honest one. Mine has tingling vibes in left handlebar at 4000rpm. Should smooth out with more kms as will the gearbox. It really makes sweet music up to 6000rpm and I'm looking forward to being able to wind it out more as it wears in. Keep up the good reviews Teapotone.

Hallelujah a good RS review. Not too many on the bike available. Its definitely is a handful on bumpy Roads and even at 14st its not compliant. Fine for gentle rides and fantastic on smooth roads. The QS is unbelievable when you use all the revs.

It's great to hear such positivity about this bike (that's sure to p off all the haters still moaning about Triumph moving production to Thailand).
What's your view on the engine modes, did you notice any significant difference between them, or, like most owners you put it in sport/track and leave it there?
I have a 16S but test rode the 19RS which felt faster in road than mine in sport! But higher pegs gave me hip cramp and the ridiculous keyless system put me off.
The whiff of quickshifter/gearbox problems raised in forums still keeps me at bargepole distance.
Only fair to mention this, not hating as I'm still a Triumph fan boy - and all manufacturers have issues.
Love mine and am looking forward to the 1160 😁
    Great review, cheers.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I try the different engine modes just so I can see which ones I prefer to ride that particular bike in. On this bike it’s as you would expect, there’s an increase in power delivery and a decrease in gizmo interference the ‘higher’ up you go all the way to track and custom modes where you can turn abs and traction off completely.

Bruce.. Owner of a a 2016 speed triple r from new.
    Remapped open leo vince cans.
130 bhp @rear wheel. Best handling bike ever had. I had a couple of warranty claims sorted by Triumph. No issues since.
Now after nearly 5 yrs a new steed beckons.
A orange beasty.. Maybe.. If it don't stick like this does to the road though. The new speed could be interesting . Not that bothered about ktms 175 bhp..

From what I know about Ohlins suspension...set it up for you - it can be chalk and cheese. Do it properly and it's like a magic carpet. And it's not difficult to do; I'm the least technical person you could meet and I could do it. Not on this bike...but that's unimportant. I'm thinking of getting one of these as a second bike (built in the UK I think as a bonus) because its a bargain. Choices are Touno or this. Great vid as always Brucie, thanks.

Nyce... I ride the same lump in a slightly different format, about same torque which is the real joy of that 1050cc but the overhaul in the Speed Triple leaves me with a bit less horsepower, 128 you're at a stated 148 !? If u want "agricultural" btw, as you described the quick shifter, you should try the GT's gearbox. When I first got it, it sounded like somebody was dropping a lump hammer inside the engine case everytime I changed down ;D Am a bit smoother now ! Great review thank you. I was thinking taking it over street triple which I used to have. I don’t like the styling though. Also triumphs approached to safety makes me concerned. I had a rr failure due to poor design decisions resulting in burned stator and bike cutting off mid ride. Super dangerous and if this would had happened mid corner It would end up in a accident. Triumph never officially addressed it despite the issue being well known on forums. I like how speed triple is still a reasonable road bike not useless powerhouse like others.

Update: went to the dealer. Found nothing in the oil. Reinstalled the QS and moved the position of the shifter lever a bit downwards. I use it a bit more aggressive now. Still fingers crossed but no more false neutrals so far. Joy to ride!
      ###### a month ago:
I am all ears about the 4th gear story. Purchased mine last August. 2019 model black and red, brand new, zero miles. I experienced two times a false neutral from 4 th to 5 th using the quickshifter. And once it banged in 5th after a false neutral for a split second. It scared the hell out of me and made me insecure regarding the quickshifter. My bloody feet lifted off the pegs when it happened. Not even mentioning the sound. Sometimes the gear changes using the QS are not very smooth. A bit random to be fair. Maybe a good chain tension helps a bit, i don't know. What bothers me is using the QS is not effortless. I did exactly 2577 KM and maybe I shouldn't moan about 3 false neutrals. Just shift and shut up. Another thing is the noise from the cam shaft train (hope its correct English). Its a bit noisy after the oil warmed up. I have no reference here so maybe its normal. Would I purchase the bike again? Hell yeah - the ear to ear smile bike. I came from a z1000sx. Greetings from The Hague
Just have read the post below from Thomas Anderson. My 4th gear is fine. Except from the false neutrals with the quickshifter. I hope I don't get problems with my 4 th gear nor my whole gearbox.

I'm thinking about s used triple or a new 790 Duke, which I liked but the salesman in Birmingham ktm didn't seem that bothered about winning a new customer, not even bothering to offer me his card. Aye sadly it’s the dealer network which seems to let KTM down here - KTM UK are great to work with and very punter focused, but as you’ve found out, that mentality isn’t shared across a lot of their dealerships 🤷‍♂️👍

Thanks for the reply and the feedback. I was thinking about travelling to another dealer for a demo as his attitude cost them a possible sale as the opportunity to have a new bike over a used one sticks quite a few ticks in the ktm plus column. I hope the young, late teen lady, on the clothing counter gets his job. He didn't get off his arse and show an interest until she stated to drag a bike out for me to sit on. Very poor show. The BMW dealer at Cotswold was much better.

I have heard mixed reports about my local triumph dealer but have not dealt with them, other than browsing but they seem very friendly and happy to provide free coffee. it used to be an independent dealer and I knew the owner from my early twenties, they were brilliant, even lending me specialist tools to spanner on my bike! Now they are part of a franchise, all the faces have changed, so I doubt they will be as customer focused once a bike is sold compared to our old independent dealer who has to work much harder to keep satisfied customers.
