Frankie not having any clue how to dress coherently is SUCH a concept. I could totally imagine them collecting any article of clothing that has patchwork because they are also patchwork lol.
Yes I thought the same thing long before this video 🤩 I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who loved that idea for Frankie! It just fits so well with both being an amalgamation of different people/monsters and the subversive experimentation of gender queer expression!
I also like to imagine them having several different interests in fashion that don't have anything to do with each other as if all of the bodies they are made out of have some kind of opinion and preference haha
hey guys, this is your reminder to NOT hate on the young actors from this movie. they are all just doing their job and having fun so there is no need to tear them down for things that are out of their control.
Absolutely. Hating on actors is just so childish and stupid. They cannot control how their characters are styled or written. Hating on them would just be stupid.
For those who don't know why Frankie is blue, it is just a copyright issue that they can't be green and have neck bolts. Since they are now working with nickelodeon, they have to follow those guidelines.
@@ayyoo_adrian6453 G1 is owned/associated with Universal Studios hence why G1 Frankie is allowed to have the green skin/bolts but because G3 is under Nickelodeon/Paramount both Paramount and Mattel would have to pay royalties for using Frankenstein’s likeness in their iteration of Monster High. There are other Frankenstein/Frankenstein adjacent characters who don’t have green skin and have to use blue like the Hotel Transylvania Frankenstein or Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
As a doll fan I would also add that short layered hairstyles are very difficult to achieve with commercial hair doll fibres, hence why they probably have long hair.
I had thought Ghoulia was supposed to embody the Claire’s/Hot Topic 2008’s “nerdcore” aesthetic with the layers of prints. Especially the arm warmers. I also like the 50’s school aesthetic because it does lend itself to that nerd vibe as well, though.
I really, really appreciated that you took into account how they're young, and tried to make the outfits modest and non-sexual. I think people forget that even though they grew up with these shows and movies, the target demographic is STILL kids (obvi not some of them, like Winx), and that shouldn't be forgotten when costume designing :) I also thought it was really great that your designs honestly fit the color palettes and aesthetics that were in the movie, just infinitely better.
a preteen here, will i agree and completely understand the reason why,i feel like it’s covering too much and giving dress code like “cover your shoulders” or “no skirts longer then you index” sometimes, also getting treated as 5 yr olds
@@batrieniel I definitely get that, but even as an almost 18yo, and as someone who prefers to cover up mostly except for the occasional croptop, sometimes it can make me really uncomfortable when shows portray teens as always being in non-modest clothing. Especially when most of us are actually in sweats and hoodies anyways. I just don't think showing skin is necessary all the time and I don't think it is really representative of all teens, and especially younger teens/preteens.
@@katedillon1977 i dont know if its a region/country thing, but her in france we tend to show our skin a lot,a bit less due to remarks from ppl especially boys but yeah(we dont pull up in bikini tops either but i think u get the point)
My only issue with the movie's styling is Frankie's lipstick. The rest of their color palette is blues and cool tones. And then you get hit with the red-orange lipstick out of nowhere! Idk if it's just me, but it is the the only thing I can think about when they're on screen
the blue skin-tone for G3 Frankie is less a creative choice and more so a result of copyright issues; while Frankenstein the novel is in the public domain, the green skin, neck bolts, and flat forehead look is an innovation of the 1931 film and thus under Universal Studios copyright. the reason why new G1 Frankie dolls (Haunt Couture, Creeproduction, Reel Drama) are still able to use the green skin image of Boris Karloff Frankenstein’s monster is because G1 was developed in partnership with Universal which is why-to my understanding-new productions of that specific era of MH doesn’t interfere or infringe on it. but because Mattel now works with Paramount, Nickelodeon, etc studio/company instead of Universal, G3 of Monster High can’t really use or take inspiration from the images and iconography of the Universal Monsters brand anymore.
Instead of changing the OG characters. They literally could’ve focused on Howleen (clawdeens little sister) and her ghoul friends. Everything is so toned down and cutesy and I feel like having a younger main character would make more sense because they are catering to a younger generation now. This feels like Monster Middle School.
i feel like we shoud leave things up to the fans at this point. there are so many amazing monster high artists in the fandom, id design and style them for free!
for real!!! fans have been sharing their design ideas for this new generation even before it was released… but we’ve gotten a boom in so much art & creativity since it’s been announced… run the fan artists some money 😩😩😩
I'm fairly certain that the designers who worked on the g3 monster high designs made the characters a lot more..edgy in the prototypes but higher ups decided to dumb down the designs. Unfortunately, I think the same would happen if they hired fans to design the costumes/dolls, maybe something will happen with fangvote though!
lagoona's restyling is definitely my favorite. i love how fashionable it looks despite being a bit more laid-back and chill compared to the other characters' outfits.
For Draculaura, I feel like you definitely could've gotten away with giving her a petticoat. Since in the past, many girls wore petticoats, it would be a nice ode to it, kind of like the corset belt. And having a bit of that white ruffle peeking out from underneath would be pretty cute, I would say! I know I've seen quite a few girls in tik tok wearing these short but fluffy petticoats, and I know for sure that as a Gen Z kid, I would _love_ to have one one day as well!
Friendly reminder to everyone that you can criticise the movie, its plot, and its costumes, without being racist, transphobic, and xenophobic, especially to the very young actors and actresses who have absolutely no say on it
I wouldn’t say actors and actresses “don’t have a say in this” There have been plenty of actors, even small time actors, that have declined roles because they knew they weren’t suited for specific characters. This is the same issue we had with Winx Fate Saga and people acted like the actors were 15 when they were well into their 30s These actors are teens but some are old enough to know about whitewashing and lightwashing
@@moomiira WHOA WHAT?? I hate the racebending too, and especially the Americanization of Drac and Abbey (de-slavification), but I would never call someone something like that. That is gross.
@@finland4ever55 drac is still half romanian, she’s just also taiwanese. she’s lost her accent which is sad, but it was a fake one to begin with. and abbey wasn’t slavic. she just had that accent. she is from the himalayas, she should have had a south asian accent, i’m glad they hired a south asian actress in the reboot movie. she should have always been south asian. i hope in the TV show they keep her south asian. it makes no sense for a girl who grew up in the himalayas to have some random ass russian accent 😭😭 also enough with the “racebending” stuff cmon. all they did was give the characters canon ethnicities instead of ambiguity and bad fake accents. draculaura having a romanian accent (a REAL one) would have been cute, but i’m not all that pressed about a romanian/taiwanese drac who’s nationality is american.
They literally could’ve hired Hayden Williams to come up with the designs for each characters outfit. It’s not bad but I kind of miss the edge monster high used to have.
It's not that, it's more of mattel catering the younger audience. Old prototype designs of the characters had darker tones, lagoona was going to be blue but suited pink better to the younger audience. Hayden Williams could have work for Haunt Couture but he works for mga as stated from the above.
The fact that you reached out to an artist to draw out your concepts was a GENIUS move. I personally struggle with visualizing outfits when just looking at the individual pieces laid out next to each other, so thank you so much for going the extra mile. Loved the looks you came up with, and the artist did a fantastic job.
I knew the people on twitter were being way too dramatic. You were very fair on your criticisms of the fashions and didn't send hate to anyone on the team
Ikr. The replies to her og tweet were just so random and hateful. Like they accused her of hating the child actors and more even before the video came out. She literally said even in her tweet that she knew budget was low and she'll keep that in mind while doing the restyling yet people complained and hated on her. They made random claims and accusing her of hating on the stylists, which she obviously didn't. Twitter is fucking wild istg
@@Wwhdduendjdhhfmwosdn They were sending her hate for this video idea cus they thought she was just gonna trash all the outfits in the movie and therefore influence people to send hate to the team/actors behind the movie. Which clearly didn't happen at all lol
The G1 fans are realizing their getting older and that their generation is dead. If I showed them ever Spider-Man film, they would thing that it's all in the same universe.
@@Wwhdduendjdhhfmwosdn just basically sending her hate about she would hate on the child actors for some reason, hate on the stylists just cause the movie isn't high budget. Or since there have been people who hate Frankie being non-binary, she would do the same and hate on them. Just mindless hate. She even replied and explained, but people refused to listen and just replied with more dumb shit
There redesigns are so perfect, you make it look so easy to style characters i find it really hard to get how the ones in charge of the movie didn't get it right lol my only critique would be regarding Cleo's scarf, i think it's too much around her neck, maybe a sheer, light, long one over her hair (kinda like a handband behind her bangs if you get me) would've made the whole thing a bit more cohesive while still reminding us of egyptian headwear ! But I'm literally nitpicking lolll
Collaborating with an artist was SUCH a smart and appreciated choice. I was just thinking “dang, I wish I could actually picture this” when you put the art on screen!! Anyways very cute video, big fan of the restylings!
i actually really like lagoona’s pink skin and her kind of “mermaid rainbow” hair. i just wish they incorporated her gen 1 girl next door aesthetic with it, then it would’ve been a better and lovelier redesign.
i agree, i love the new lagoona but my god her fashion is atrocious. she's literally one of the cutest dolls and best designs, she just needs a good styling! that being said i can appreciate that she is the weird kid so dresses weird. that was also me at that age. but still LMAO
@@papercut1724 yes that was their intention. it’s a reboot and separate universe. not an updated design, a complete redesign. kids in testing liked her better

Draculaura was my absolute favorite when the Gen 1 dolls came out. (I specifically remember her sleepover outfit, and loving it.) Seeing your interpretation of her is wonderful, it looks like the doll (and the style) that I grew up with, without seeming dated.
The corsets now are the modern 2010s big belts No one can change my mind! By the way, great vid. I wasn’t sure about the first restyling but with the drawing all came together😊
Lagoona being pink could have made sense had they kept her Colombian Her father is from South America and lived in the Amazon Rivers. That’s also where you find the pink river dolphins, which have tons of horror and fairytale stories about them. Also piranhas since Lagoona has sharp teeth like them But apparently she is Honduran in the cartoon, which destroys all my points, and that kinda sucks
@@tonystonem9614 initially, which didn't make sense because the creature of the black lagoon lived in the amazon But no in this reboot she is from latin America. Where exactly? They are loose with that
@@afrolens9532 but the character is Australian tho , not saying anything abt Latin America. She's just a blue sea creature with an Australian accent. Frankenstein was created in Britain in the folklore but Frankie isn't British
@@tonystonem9614 Frankenstein's monster wasn't created in Britain. The author is British And while everyone was Americanized, Frankie's grandfather, the doctor had an accent showing he was from Europe
This might be the nostalgia brain rot but I'm not a fan of Ghoulias new design. A lot of your points hit home tho. To catch you up on the lore: Ghoulia Yelps was a COMIC nerd, not a gamer (they made a whole different doll with the retro game gimmick). She was the smartest one of the group and was most of the time non-verbal. I always loved her old 50's styling and I'm happy you took inspiration from that, but the finished outfit reads more cottagecore to me?? I think a turtleneck or other kind of sweater would have helped. Anyway PLEAAAAAAASE do more restyling videos there so cooool!
To be fair Ghoulia is like a geek , so her entire style is based on geeky interests of the time , so being a gamer today is not so far off , there is even a few occasions when gaming and Ghoulia are mentioned in Gen 1. However I still like elements of the restyling specially the vest.
oh my gosh-i was JUST thinking “how amazing would it be if there was an artist collab to bring the moodboard to life”…..and then you did it!! i love it!!! really helps pull the vision together! love to see it : ) also, just in general i love your restyling videos 🖤
Changes I'd make for the redesigns personally, -Clawdeen's been downgraded so much aaaahhhh! but if she must lose her edge, I would put back in her DIY thing. in the original she was mentioned to make some of her own clothes, upcycle her old ones, and just general DIY stuff. I vividly remember reading in the Monster High novels how she even took some of her natural fur that she had shaved off, dyed it and turned it into fabric to use for projects, or painting woodchips. I would've tried to incorporate maybe some custom resin jewelry, fur trim scarves and jackets and maybe a purse very clearly made from something she found at a thrift store. I really liked her creativity in the original, but it sometimes didn't always come through. -Draculaura I'd adjust her makeup. Since she's a vampire and cannot see herself in the mirror properly, perhaps her makeup would be simplified. She'd just stick to a routine that is easier for her to pull off, or maybe sometimes it'd be visibly messy. Or maybe there's just flavoring somewhere that she has someone else do her makeup. -Cleo needs her bandage wraps. Not just for the look, but like, actually needs it. She doesn't properly read as a mummy in the film, and in the original, it's actually the bandage wraps that are even keeping her alive. It's what's preserved her and families bodies for 5,000+ years and if they were to take them off, they'd disintegrate and die. It's an essential rule that she must have her wraps somewhere on her body at all times. -Lagoona's new design gives very strong 2017 mermaid instagram vibes to me, which I don't hate. It's very cute and aesthetic, she's just a whole different girl to me. I don't consider her the same person as g1 Lagoona. Maybe a cousin. adore the Neptuna backpack in your version though -Abbey i'd prolly adjust her body itself more. She doesn't read vividly as a yeti in the original, just as an ice elemental. Let her be taller, let her have muscle, let her have big feet and body hair. -I kinda disagree with your assessment of Ghoulia, tbh. Your design is cute, but I love Epic Gamer Ghoul so much. And in the original, Ghoulia was long established as both the smart girl and the nerdy girl. She was a comic book nerd, and the skateboard her new doll comes with has the og 2011 artwork of her favorite superhero on it. On top of that, Monster High's 2011 comic con exclusive doll was of Ghoulia attending Comic Con dressed in cosplay of her favorite hero and collecting comic con exclusive merch of that hero. She is a nerd and has always been a nerd, she just has video games on top of comics now. I have the new Ghoulia doll, and I love her lil beanie and combat boots and the frigging Creeptendo Witch sends me. Loathe her new jacket though. Burn it, I hate it.
Such a fun video! It would be cool if you could do this for more franchises like Zombies, Descendants, Bratz, the Netflix version of Winx, etc. It's a creative and unique way to talk about fashion and trends without the regular critique videos that are so popular.
Hi! Thank you for sharing, I really liked your re-designs on the characters you mentioned. •I found out that this new Gen 3 version of Lagoona Blue is supposed to be from the country of Honduras, making her Latina. Which I think kind of makes sense since her father (I think it’s her father) is the creature from the black Lagoon which is originally from the Amazon Rainforest. •But I am kind of confused on why Lagoona is the color pink instead of blue. Maybe it’s because in the Amazon Rainforest, there’s the Amazon river dolphin that is the color pink. I am not sure. •Also, as someone who is South American, I am happy with the representation.
They did testing with a panel of children prior to release and between a blue doll or a pink doll the kids apparently preferred the pink ver more. Personally I love pink Lagoona so I can see why
I thought they made lagoona blue be pink because in the monster high storyline, she had some outcast issues when compared to the other fish people in the original show despite looking just like them. I felt like by making her pink they were trying to make some racial undertones to why she was ostracised by her own kind. Sorry if I badly explained by viewpoint
Draculaura is screaming lolita to me too! Very 2010s though as you said. Split color wigs were SOOO popular during that time in lolita fashion. I was a victim to it haha
Apparently a lot of people don't know this but frankie is actually no longer the child of Frankenstein, instead they're now the child of Dr Mary Shelley (which is apparently the actual name of the woman who wrote the og Frankenstein book). Bc of copyright issues they had to change this, since this new gen is working with Nickelodeon, they can't use the rights to Frankenstein bc it's owned by universal. That also explains why Frankie is no longer green and has no neck bolts.
As much as I do think your look for Frankie is really cute, I do want to say that Frankie having long hair and seeming to be generally femme in presentation is honestly pretty great. I'm a feminine presenting nonbinary person myself, and I see a bit of myself in the version of Frankie G3 has given us. In most cases, if you see AFAB nonbinary people in media, they're almost definitely going to be either masculine or androgynous in presentation, which excludes a whole sect of the nonbinary community most of the time. Frankie existing as they do alleviates that issue, and I'm kinda grateful for it ^^ All that being said, Draculaura is my favorite of the restylings done here. She's by far the cutest one to me! (BTW, even though I don't like the look they gave her, Ghoulia being a gamer does make sense because, in conjuction with generally being the brainiac of the school, her G1 self was also into comics and video games and general nerd culture.)
I use to give a lot of credits to the costumes of productions with short budgets until I entered art school. I attend a small public art school and we all broke but everyone looks fire, you see lot of diversity in fashion because of the creative styling and attention to details. Also, i know they somewhat tried to update the looks of the characters but ended up oversimplifying them in an era where specially younger generations are developing their own personal aesthetics with so much care. I think both the movie and the dolls could have been so much better with the appropriate research, even with the new colorful theme and stuff because now they feel really boring, not only for MH but for the whole doll industry
About Frankie being blue. Generation 1 and 2 of Monster high were in collaboration with Universal. That’s why the main characters were of classic universal monsters. When Nickelodeon got their hands on Monster High, they lost the collaboration with Universal and couldn’t use some of the original characters’ attributes. One of them being a green Frankenstein with bolts coming out of they’re neck. That’s why Frankie’s blue.
Your restylings are so cute, I love how each one looks modern while still clearly evoking their original character. You especially nailed Draculaura and Cleo de Nile, their color palettes and Lolita inspiration are so perfect! I did not expect to love Lagoona's look as much as I do, I was a little iffy about the rash guard at first but it looks amazing with the rest of the styling.
I LOVE that you collaborated with an artist to bring your redesigns to life. It really drives home how much better the outfits could be and your eye for fashion ❤️🔥
Honestly, your designs and LucyDash’s execution made the characters look so good with their new personalities. I especially love your take on Lagoona, Draculaura, and Ghoulia.
I absolutely love everything about this and how much thought you put into every single person/Monster, especially draculaura outfit fits her perfectly (and that you included her age and how that influences her fashion, and frankie not completely knowing how to dress and wearing untypical (yet so fitting) outfits
Frankie's restyling is by far my favourite. I'm so excited that they're nb, they were my favourite when I was a kid - i wanted to collect all of them and had 6 different ones before I stopped. It's nice that I feel even more of a connection with them now :) I also love harajuku and layering big masc pieces like that!
just a note, from a non-binary person: we can look like anyone. I don't wake up every morning and dress in equal parts mens and womens clothing taking care to blend my outfit to perfect androgyny. I tend to dress more like frankie in the show in the sense that some days it comes out fem and some days it doesn't. I've had long hair, I've had short hair.... I think we need to let go of the idea that a non-binary person has to look androgynous. Just my take, love the vid :)
This is true, but her point was that Frankie specifically would dress androgynously bc she is literally patched together from many people. She’s combining different fem and masc styles like she was stitched together from other people
the illustrations helped me so so soooo much to see the vision you had bc I'm a visual learner PLUS I ADORE THE ART STYLE SO MUCH DEFINITELY GIVING THE ARTIST A VISIT AND A FOLLOW
This was so much fun. Love seeing your creative side as a stylist! I’m a millennial who has no connection to the dolls, but I loved what you did with Lagoona Blue 🏝
I think it's interesting that you mentioned a Lolita look for draculaura. Hextian did a doll face up of draculaura and used lolita inspiration. I loved how the doll turned out
I absolutely love the illustrations. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine the full outfit on the person with just styling boards and I’m in love with every single illustration. I’m kind of torn about gen 3. Honestly I was quite surprised how much I actually enjoyed the movie and the doll. But i also dislike a lot of the changes.
thank you so much for the respect shown in this video for things such as race and gender of characters. its such a tiny thing, but god not everyone shows that respect and it can be quite harmful towards those of us in the MH or doll community seeing hateful things about characters we can now see ourselves in more. the designs you guys did are lovely, and have to be my favorite of redesigns ive seen.
ATTENTION! 13:21 I don’t know if you wanted to imply that this outfit is Lolita, because usually you’re a lot more knowledgeable about fashion than I am, but it is NOT Lolita! It’s too figure hugging to classify as Lolita as well as missing the iconic hoop skirt that is CRUCIAL to Lolita. It may be another fashion style like Otome Kei, but not Lolita. The next picture IS Lolita though.
I cant say got sure if that image would best be described as lolita or something else, although I do know that lolita fashion does not need to have hoop skirts. It's the most iconic style for lolita fashion, but it's not what defines something as lolita or not.
@@endieisded I think I confused Petticoats and Hoop Skirts. But if you’re saying that Lolita doesn’t need a petticoat you’re wrong. That’s the NUMBER ONE rule of Lolita. The petticoat has to either be Bell shaped or A shaped. If there’s no petticoat it is not Lolita.
@@endieisded Yes it is. It’s number one of every Lolita Rule list. If you show up at the Lolita meetup without petticoat on people are gonna call you a dirty ita behind your back. I don’t know much about goth, but I think the only requirement there is to listen to the music.
Loved, loved, LOVED this video. Amazing outfits and I love the artwork for the characters. Would honestly buy dolls of all of them but Frankie, Lagoona and Ghoulia are my personal faves.
I think they're all great!! I feel like you did fashion and *style* without it being too busy, it all looks purposeful with intention. A common thing I see nowadays is the maximalism, solely for the sake of maximalism, and it's just missing that one piece of cohesion that would make the look stand out as a singular ~ensemble~. That being said clawdeen and cleo are most like the style I wish I did, (or do in my head), in real life I'm very casual.
This video is great! I don't know anything about Monster High but you made it really open to nonviewers by briefing their characters and giving examples of past outfits. You really thought this out and the labor comes through in the final product. Thanks for a great video!!
Even though it doesn’t have a reboot (yet), I would LOVE it if you did a video like this for Ever After High. Basically, if Ever After High did get a reboot, how would you style the characters?
It’s fun to see your styling! I was really turned off by the initial styling but it honestly grew on me. Even if there’s some clashing and dated looks, I realize that’s inevitable for this movie’s budget and wardrobe access. For the restraints they had, I think they pulled it off well tbh. I also personally prefer the in your face styling for something as campy as a teenage monster musical over subtle motifs but it would’ve been cool if the movie had more iconic looks.
if i can say something sort of controversial, the actor who plays frankie is nb, uses he/they pronouns and is on insta all the time in full length floral dresses! what a person wears doesn't do anything to indicate their pronouns, and frankie can look super feminine and still be nb!
Totally agree! I thought I was the only one thinking this. As a nonbinary person I hate it when people (especially cis people) equate our gender expression to the length of our hair and the style of our clothes. It pushes gender queer people further into boxes that we have always been trying to escape from. Just because G3 Frankie identifies as nonbinary doesn't mean that they need to be wearing "androgynous" clothing. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but it kinda bothered me as a trans person. :/
@@fleawalker9986 totally! gender identity and gender presentation are so different, if you put a cis woman in a suit and cut her hair she would probably still want to be called she. I was a little disappointed with this video - simultaneously acknowledging that gender and presentation are different while forcing frankie to display androgyny to match their gender 🙄
I love the addition of drawing the character in the new outfit, they are cute drawings and helps visualizing - I love these vids even with mood board style normally, but the drawing helps bring it together ❤
I think Abby should have been a bit more hippie. Ghoulia also should have leaned into early 2000s myspace scene style, fitting her character more accurately.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE the frankie and lagoona redesign!! frankie's harajuku/alternate-esque and lagoona's y2k-inspired fashion brings a smile to my quirky self who loves the 2000's fashion to no end!!
No hate to your designs, but I feel like this is an ongoing thing nowadays and I see it specially with Barbie. Because they feel the need to cater to the latest trends and being more accessible? I don't even understand...they make the designs so underwhelming! and boring! It's dolls! and cartoons! Kids want details and beautiful things to look at and discover. That's why I fell in love with Monster High in the beginning. The designs are so elaborate and there are so many details to look for, cool references and just overall they are impactfull. And that's how I remember my barbie dolls from childhood as well. I didn't want a doll that looked like me or looked like she could go to the groceries store, but something glamorous and beautiful that would entertain me just from looking at it. They aren't realistic? It's not meant to be. Specially here where it's a fantasy magic world of monsters. That aside, I actually appreciated some of your designs. The artist collab was genius
You did such a great job, they need someone like you styling for these movies, I love the way you research the outfit inspirations for the characters which is great 😊

I LOOOVE THAT WE GET AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE RESTYLING 😍😍😍
the artwork is beautiful ✨
SAME! I loved that she went the extra mile with this. Definitely helped me envisioned the characters' new looks 😍
yes it was an amazing addition!!
I audibly gasped when I saw Clawdeen, low-key wishing every styling video was like this cause I'm in love
Same especially for Frankie because on paper it seemed like way to much 😂
I had thought Ghoulia was supposed to embody the Claire’s/Hot Topic 2008’s “nerdcore” aesthetic with the layers of prints. Especially the arm warmers. I also like the 50’s school aesthetic because it does lend itself to that nerd vibe as well, though.
Right the 50's aesthetic read more Operetta to me, I would've loved a more 2000's scene vibe for Ghoulia
Honestly yeah, I wouldn’t have such a problem with their design if their lip color was a little more cohesive with the rest of their color story.
I love that you collaborated with an artist to showcase how the clothes would actually look like put together. Amazing video!
the blue skin-tone for G3 Frankie is less a creative choice and more so a result of copyright issues; while Frankenstein the novel is in the public domain, the green skin, neck bolts, and flat forehead look is an innovation of the 1931 film and thus under Universal Studios copyright.
the reason why new G1 Frankie dolls (Haunt Couture, Creeproduction, Reel Drama) are still able to use the green skin image of Boris Karloff Frankenstein’s monster is because G1 was developed in partnership with Universal which is why-to my understanding-new productions of that specific era of MH doesn’t interfere or infringe on it.
but because Mattel now works with Paramount, Nickelodeon, etc studio/company instead of Universal, G3 of Monster High can’t really use or take inspiration from the images and iconography of the Universal Monsters brand anymore.
But universal and paramount have many partnerships. About 40% of universal studios has paramount owned brands.
Commissioning an artist to draw your restylings is so *chef’s kiss* thank you thank you thank you
for realllll !! i loved the art so MUCH 😭 not only did it help show the final outfits, tessa also supported an artist which is rlly cool 😭💗💗💗💗💗💗

I think that was why detective Pikachu did so well is because they hired a fan that did amazing artwork
lagoona's restyling is definitely my favorite. i love how fashionable it looks despite being a bit more laid-back and chill compared to the other characters' outfits.
I know I've seen quite a few girls in tik tok wearing these short but fluffy petticoats, and I know for sure that as a Gen Z kid, I would _love_ to have one one day as well!
considering draculaura's style has always been lolita, a petticoat makes SO much sense for the classic lolita bell skirt shape
Friendly reminder to everyone that you can criticise the movie, its plot, and its costumes, without being racist, transphobic, and xenophobic, especially to the very young actors and actresses who have absolutely no say on it
I wouldn’t say actors and actresses “don’t have a say in this”
There have been plenty of actors, even small time actors, that have declined roles because they knew they weren’t suited for specific characters. This is the same issue we had with Winx Fate Saga and people acted like the actors were 15 when they were well into their 30s
These actors are teens but some are old enough to know about whitewashing and lightwashing

They literally could’ve hired Hayden Williams to come up with the designs for each characters outfit. It’s not bad but I kind of miss the edge monster high used to have.
I don't think they could actually because he works for Bratz and MGA and Mattel hate each other
It's not that, it's more of mattel catering the younger audience. Old prototype designs of the characters had darker tones, lagoona was going to be blue but suited pink better to the younger audience. Hayden Williams could have work for Haunt Couture but he works for mga as stated from the above.
@@lavose8709 he does!?!

Lagoona being pink could have made sense had they kept her Colombian
Her father is from South America and lived in the Amazon Rivers. That’s also where you find the pink river dolphins, which have tons of horror and fairytale stories about them. Also piranhas since Lagoona has sharp teeth like them
But apparently she is Honduran in the cartoon, which destroys all my points, and that kinda sucks
I feel like her mom is from Honduras, and her dad's colombian.
Isn't she Australian tho. There's tons of aboriginal culture to choose from
@@tonystonem9614 initially, which didn't make sense because the creature of the black lagoon lived in the amazon

Changes I'd make for the redesigns personally,
-Clawdeen's been downgraded so much aaaahhhh! but if she must lose her edge, I would put back in her DIY thing. in the original she was mentioned to make some of her own clothes, upcycle her old ones, and just general DIY stuff.
Maybe a cousin. adore the Neptuna backpack in your version though
-Abbey i'd prolly adjust her body itself more.
The situation with Cleo however really makes me wonder if she and her family owns an infinite supply of bandage wraps to change in and out of.
Such a fun video! It would be cool if you could do this for more franchises like Zombies, Descendants, Bratz, the Netflix version of Winx, etc. It's a creative and unique way to talk about fashion and trends without the regular critique videos that are so popular.
I believe she's covered Bratz and Netflix
@@abookishmess She has, but Bratz was in a ranking video. I would like to see updated re-styling videos for that and for season 2 of Netflix Winx!
Thank you for this. I had to explain to someone earlier
from what i remember lagoona is partially based off of axotols?
@@strwbrysodaa I thought she was based on piranhas.
The illustrations for each character with your styling is really cute
Apparently a lot of people don't know this but frankie is actually no longer the child of Frankenstein, instead they're now the child of Dr Mary Shelley (which is apparently the actual name of the woman who wrote the og Frankenstein book). Bc of copyright issues they had to change this, since this new gen is working with Nickelodeon, they can't use the rights to Frankenstein bc it's owned by universal. That also explains why Frankie is no longer green and has no neck bolts.
I mean, Ghoulia was always a Friki in G1 also, she loves superheroes and videogames, so she being a gamer in G3 makes a lots of sense 😅
Frankie existing as they do alleviates that issue, and I'm kinda grateful for it ^^
All that being said, Draculaura is my favorite of the restylings done here.
I think both the movie and the dolls could have been so much better with the appropriate research, even with the new colorful theme and stuff because now they feel really boring, not only for MH but for the whole doll industry
zombies 3 had the best werewolf design. I wished they had hay style more incorporated for this movie.
Wow, this was well done. I'm glad you got an artist to do mockups of each of them. It was cool to see that after discussing the inspiration for them.
I LOVE that you did that collab and let everything be drawn! That's what bothers me about moodboards all the time. Thank you!
wow we need YOU to work on all these new movies/shows - you’re literally incredible
Great how you didn't just complain about the costuming, but gave positive feedback and talked about things that you did like while still critiquing.
I love these restylings, and I really like that you collabed with an illustrator, the final designs all look amazing!!!

Omg I LOVE THAT YOU COLLABED WITH LUCY DASH. SHES ONE OF MY FAV ARTISTS! Her bringing your styling to life is just perfect!
She’s combining different fem and masc styles like she was stitched together from other people
wow you’re really good at styling cause i could totally see those characters with those outfits

thank you so much for the respect shown in this video for things such as race and gender of characters. its such a tiny thing, but god not everyone shows that respect and it can be quite harmful towards those of us in the MH or doll community seeing hateful things about characters we can now see ourselves in more. the designs you guys did are lovely, and have to be my favorite of redesigns ive seen.
@@seyspectra A bell-shaped skirt is typical, but again, not required. Sort of like how Goth fashion typically has black, but it's not a requirement.

FRANKIE'S OUTFIT IS ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT!!
I also personally prefer the in your face styling for something as campy as a teenage monster musical over subtle motifs but it would’ve been cool if the movie had more iconic looks.
i LOVE these redesign videos, its so fun to see your thought process and all the cool clothes you pick out :)
I’m OBSESSED with the art! I have a hard time visualizing mood boards so this was PERFECT
if i can say something sort of controversial, the actor who plays frankie is nb, uses he/they pronouns and is on insta all the time in full length floral dresses! what a person wears doesn't do anything to indicate their pronouns, and frankie can look super feminine and still be nb!
I LOVE the addition of the artist bringing your ideas to life.
IM SOO IN LOVE WITH FRANKIE'S REDESIGN THEY LOOK AWESOME
OHHHHHH i LOVEEEEEE you showing the new outfits on the characters. THANK YOU
Fun fact about dolls is that usually the reason why dolls have long hair is for hair play x3
i love love LOVE your frankie rework !!!!!!
totally loved this
i LOVE LOVE LOVE the frankie and lagoona redesign!! frankie's harajuku/alternate-esque and lagoona's y2k-inspired fashion brings a smile to my quirky self who loves the 2000's fashion to no end!!
It just occured to me that this restyled Clawdeen gives major astrology freak vibes and I kinda love it. Even thoug I HATE furr and animal print
Honestly the draculaura redesign looks like a enhanced version of her doll outfit! It has some of those same kind of concepts just REALLY simplified
A *Monster High* video from ModernGurlz!??? YASSSSSSSSS
The artwork is amazing!!! Lucydash is one of my favorite artists, and the fact that you collaborated with her was such a nice surprise! 💖💕
I missed your restyling videos so much 🥺🤧
You did such a great job, they need someone like you styling for these movies, I love the way you research the outfit inspirations for the characters which is great 😊
I actually really like G3 Gouliah’s doll outfit 😂😅😅😅 I think her intestines jacket and little hat are so cute 😅
Love your videos! 🖤
Ok but making Frankie move like that for the movie is INSANE. Such complexity!! Ive never seen something like that
omg im actually crying the artwork is STUNNING and all the thought that went into the restylings is just sooooo!!!! *CHEF'S KISS*
When I saw the artist collabs I actually said "oh my god!" out loud! What a lovely surprise and gorgeous illustrations, really appreciate the care that goes into this channel
Really appreciate your fashion redesigns also respecting the fact that these characters are supposed to be minors.
frankie would totally wear the loafers but i also think they would wear converse/sneakers decorated with decals and doodles :•)
*rubs hands manically* this ought to be good
I really enjoy their platforms and it's a reference to Frankensteins monster cuz he had those big shoes
