Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Eady (Amy Brenneman) discuss their families over drinks.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A successful career criminal considers getting out of the business after one last score, while an obsessive cop desperately tries to put him behind bars in this intelligent thriller written and directed by Michael Mann. Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) is a thief who specializes in big, risky jobs, such as banks and armored cars. He's very good at what he does; he's bright, methodical, and has honed his skills as a thief at the expense of his personal life, vowing never to get involved in a relationship from which he couldn't walk away in 30 seconds. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) is an L.A.P.D. detective determined to catch McCauley, but while McCauley's personal code has forced him to do without a wife and children, Hanna's dedication has made a wreck of the home he's tried to have; he's been divorced twice, he's all but a stranger to his third wife, and he has no idea how to reach out to his troubled step-daughter. While McCauley has enough money to retire and is planning to move to New Zealand, he loves the thrill of robbery as much as the profit, and is blocking out plans for one more job; meanwhile, he's met a woman, Eady (Amy Brenneman), whom he's not so sure he can walk away from. The supporting cast includes Val Kilmer as Chris, one of McCauley's partners; Ashley Judd as his wife Charlene; Jon Voight as Nate; Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano; and Henry Rollins as Hugh, who is beaten up by Hanna.

I never thought much of this scene when I was a teenager. But now that I’m 37, ever since my mother died along time ago, and my father and my brother disappeared, this scene really hit home with me.

There’s a very fine line between the two, which I think this scene shows brilliantly…I think Neil understands that his work isn’t conducive to relationships but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t desire one
He was lonely.
This scene changed my life in a strange way. The beautiful cityscape, the simple dialogue, the electric guitar lingering in the background. It has always stuck with me.
I love the contrast in how they describe their family history.

Truly one of my favorite moments of the entire film. The unlikely, but immediate connection between Neil and Eady, the gorgeous view of the city, and that beautiful music. Well done, Mr. Mann. Well done.

Just saw this movie a few months ago, amazing.
This was a tough scene to shoot. It was at a south central LA home that was up on a cliffside. Tough gang area and they weren't happy for us to be there. Michael Mann wanted to control the look of the city lights through the scene, it was a low light situation but at times he wanted the characters and the city lights way off in the distance in focus at the same time. This was the days of film and you cannot do that. The grip crew had to assemble scaffolding on the hillside tall enough to put stands on that would hold a large green screen that would enable all the city background to be added in the background during post. Some of the shots were done without the green screen in place ( close ups, where lights were out of focus) so the green screen had to be removed as well as the stands and scaffolding, all while everyone waited to shoot those shots. Very difficult on a steep hillside. All the while gang members were taking pot shots at the lights that were up on telescopic man lifts 80' in the air. The electricians were rappelling out to save their own lives. A very tough evening that lasted till dawn so we could do the scene with the two of them on the hillside beside the house.

I imagine that home is worth is over 10 million now, crazy to think that that neighborhood was once a ghetto. And the lights on the telescoptic man lift, were those Arri M40 4ks? The ones they use to light up the whole backdrop .. cheers yo! Also are there any articles to read about this? would love to learn more

What an icon film. Full of class everywhere, brilliant scenes. Heat makes it into my all time Top 10 movies of all time. Im watching it on Sky Movie Classics now for about the 40th time and simultaneously on Sky Movie Greats is The Godfather.. Unbelievable duo!!

I was born in 2000's but when I see this scene and even movie I can feel the great days in LA back in 90's when people had peace and good times.Truly a masterpiece the movie never gets old because of Deniro and Al

The most unrealistic scene in this movie is that Neil is from the Bay Area
Lol like that peaceful time in 92' when they took over the city for a week, killed 65 people, caused about $1,000,000,000 in damages, destroyed thousands of businesses beyond repair and pulled random people out of their car to beat them to death? Yeah, good times.
Love this scene, the city of light between them and that guitar wheeping is just awesome..

The most romantic scene ever! makes me wanna live something similar to that at least once in my life, I mean, city lights, wonderful night, great landscape right in front of you, a special girl you met and end up living such a romantic moment and then making love....man! it's a dream, a great dream.

Heat played in Australian cinemas last year. I wasn't sure if I should attend. Watched Heat dozens of times. Cinema did not disappoint. Not a single boring scene.

I’ve always loved this movie thanks to my mother for showing me this magnificent movie. everything about is perfection but this scene is sublime. it’s magical.
no movie scene has ever been sexier, passionate, incredibly moving and calm and relaxing.

I remember being 22 and I had come over my ex boyfriends house. we were friends. strangers to lovers to strangers that thought could ignore the blinding chemistry between them.
we fell into affection easily and that night, I finally gave into him and we made love for the first time in all the 6 years I’d known him.
we were sitting outside on his parents porch. it was July. it was a hot summer night and we’re laying there on a reclining chair. across from one another. I put on last nite by teryje and asked him if he knew what was my favorite part of being touched by him was?
he smiled shyly and asked me what it was.
I said it was his strength. his power to convince me of a truth he knew was only ever a lie. that we could never be together like we once were. that I love him. and I could live without him.
But never like before. it would never be the same.
i think I’ll miss him forever. i think I know what I have to do to let go of him.

Real for most of the wide shots. (Bad) green screen for the close ups sadly.
From Dante Spinotti, movie dop: It was low frame rate shot of the view on this location combined with characters shot on that site using green screen. So it's all 'real'. Movie negatives wasnt so sensitive to light back in the day to capture it at once.
My God Los Santos looks AMAZING (most overused word in history) at night!

Question for the movie buffs, was this scene shot against a green screen when they are looking out to the city?
It seems so to me. Apart from that, you can seen the reflection of blue spotlights in the window behind them. The blue spotlights that give that gorgeous blue color light throughout all the movie. We see the same blue lighting in the movie Collateral. I have seen Hear ten times al least. Watching this movie gets me so emotional.

Love this movie and scene. But I must ask, why oh why the cheesy green screen background????!!! And remember this is the mid 90s, so green screen was crap then. I just never understood why they did that. The real background was beautiful. Truly baffling

Listen, if you're somebody with well orchestrated plans, don't get sidetracked. Sure, this moment was sweet but ultimately one of the biggest reasonings why Neil's entire plan failed. Aside the fact they've just met, they're also completely unaware of whoever was honest until everybody caught wind of the truth. Them having a one-night-stand would've been fine only if this calculated buffoon simply never contacted her again FOR HER SAFETY instead of deliberately dragging her into what would've became Bonnie and Clyde. This woman wasn't involved in his hectic lifestyle until they stupidly began their pathetic romantic relationship. This curly-headed bookworm should've never met him because now he'd dead and only a weird memory to her.
