Introduction: (interview starts at 2.47)
In April 1962, François Truffaut wrote a long letter to Alfred Hitchcock.
“Dear Mr. Hitchcock, along discussions with foreign journalists, especially in New York, I discovered that people often have a somehow superficial idea of your work. Moreover, the propaganda we did in ‘Cahiers du Cinema’ was great for France but not adapted for America, because too intellectual.
Since I’m directing movies, my admiration for your work never decreased, at the contrary it increased and changed. I saw around 5 to 6 time every of your movies, and more and more with a making-process point of view. Lots of directors have love for Cinema but you have love for film, and that’s what I want to discuss with you.
I’d really appreciate a week-long recorded interview, for a 30ish hour long recording, in order to write not articles but a full book, published in the same time in New York and Paris, and after that possibly worldwide”
In Los Angeles, Hitchcock is directing his 48th picture, “The Birds”. He telegraphed to Truffaut to book the meeting on the 13th of August 1962, day of his 63th Birthday, in his Universal’s Office. Truffaut who don’t speak English at the time, came with Helen Scott, an American friend. He told Hitchcock “She can translate so fast that we will have the feeling to speak without mediator”
For one week, Truffaut had a discussion with Hitchcock on his career, movie by movie, starting with the British era at the beginning of the 20ies, covering the entire work of the director ending with “The Birds”
The book about their meeting was published first in 1966, and then republished lots of times. It might still be the most famous book about Cinema nowadays. Corrected a last time by Truffaut in 1983, one year before his death. Luckily, those recording were found in a cardboard box, in half-an-hour tapes. Also those recording where done in 1962 with good technical conditions, so we can enjoy them nowadays.
Listening to their voices, laughs, digressions and collusion, we share their intimacy with the complicity of Helen Scott.
So many friendly moments we will discover along the episodes.
In this first episode, Hitchcock brings up his youth in London, his years in Jesuit school, his formation as an engineer and his first job as a designer for Cinema.

Wow, thanks so much for uploading this !! I've had the book for 30 years and whenever I watch a Hitch again I grab the book and read what he and Francois said about the film. I just went through all of Hitch's films again, would be great if you could upload Murder ! , it's hard to find and not on youtube. The Ring is also a very good film, second best of his silent. The lady doing the translating did an outstanding job! Although, I wish they had recorded her on a separate track because she steps on much that Hitch was saying.
When Truffaut and Hitchcock agreed to do the book they searched for a translator who was familiar with movie terms.
@@Setebos She was a friend of Truffaut and he already knew she would be the interpreter even before he contacted Hitchcock (Translators only translates writings). He said in a French interview that he would not have considered doing this interview with another interpreter. When he contacted Hitchcock to do this interview he explained that the interpreter was so fast and so good, he would not have any impact on the rhythm of the interview nor the moods. Helen Scott worked as a Director of Public Relation at the French Film Office in New York. She collaborated with Truffaut in writing the book after the interviews and also helped him with dialogues for "Fahrenheit 451" and translations of other books. They were very close friends and there is an extensive collection of letters they have written to one another.

I am now reading F. Truffaut correspondance, amongst them letters to Scott. Anyone that love cinema and Truffaut should read those. Spectacular reading, great insight in his life and his profession. He was a genius!

And sometimes a master of dry humor -not sure if it's true, but they say he hosted a party with all the "celebs" back when and stood outside the door dressed in police uniform greeting his guests !..."It's only a movie, Martin . "( answering a nervous Martin Landau).

Update on uploading movies on TH-cam:
I tried to share "The RIng" today but the video was blocked immediatly because of StudioCanal rights. Ther also have the rights for "Blackmail", "Murder!", "The Skin Game", "Foreign Correspondant" and some other lesser known movies.
That explain why most of those are not at all on TH-cam. I'll try to share them anyways but I expect the same blocking.

While studying cinema when I was younger, this was my bible. As it must be for the majority of people studying cinema around the world.
It's in my movie book collection as well. My only wish is that Truffaut had delayed just a bit so that we could've had commentary on "The Birds" as well.

@@Setebos I am now reading Truffaut compilation of correspondence from late 1940s to his death! And writing to Scott about the book (which he wrote with her), he lamented that they had to conclude the writing, all he wanted was to up to date the interviews and the book every year with Hitchcok as well and keep it all for himself! I truly advise to read his correspondance, especially if you love movies. This is a great insight in his life, but also in his profession. BTW, Hitchcock had a real respect for Truffaut, which was not an easy thing for Alfred.
I bought this off a recommendation from a Manga theory and practice book from Hirohiko Araki. He considers it one of his comic book making bibles.
Hitchcock was the ultimate self-promoter. He inherited this attribute from his father, a grocer. Always selling, always promoting, always moving inventory. Instead of canned goods, it was canned reels of film.

You're welcome, the 25 episodes cover the entire book, but there were a lot of "off the record" interviews going on, to discuss more personal or darker/deeper subjects, so the book is more complete in a way, but also less raw if that makes sense

The simultaneous translation although excellent et très professionelle could let the interviewed finish his ideias first instead of translating separately every single sentence

The interpreter has a difficult job in between the two to create a flow and rhythm. Not easy to do and she doesn't always get it right but still not bad. People who get along well can present ideas and communicate to each other in a particular way. It seems they both have a lot to say. Maybe a musician would have been perfect. Stitching together a sing-song, call and response.

What's the "Griffith" sign all about?? Annoying.
Even though everyone in tbis interview has passed away. The interviewer and Translator need to chill. It takes a Hitchcock a while to articulate what he wants to say and all the talking over eachother is frustrating
