i gotta ask, how long does the plastic last for? i saw a documentary on a museum trying to find ways to preserve items from like the 1920's and stuff made from plastic, with things like glasses, and art pieces etc, and apparently its very hard because the plastic degrades over time way quicker than something made from stone or wood or metal, and the plastic begins changing and getting sticky etc. the other thing i saw was someone with a huge action figure collection, and his teenage mutant ninja turtles despite being only 30 years old, if that, the plastic has actually become sticky enough that he can stick them to a wall and they stay there. pieces like these costumes, and even 3D printed artwork, how the heck do you preserve something like that for future generations?
As a fashion student, the innovation of the making that Sophy Wong uses is incredible. For instance using the seams or biding to hide cables or putting pieces together with a 3D own rather than sewing. So inspiring
It's still just 3D printed cosmetics on top of a traditional mesh garment. Costume makers have been doing this for decades if not millennia to make intricate detailing. The only innovation here is that it's a lot less pain staking to prototype and create.
That 1st jacket would be great for people who ride motorcycles at night, so not just for fashion but for extra safety. She should look into holographic chocolate, as the holographic look doesnt come from a layer of plastic but the structure of the surface the chocolate is pored onto. I have been designing futuristic clothing for a while now , I would love to speak with her and maybe do a piece together, it would really show off a whole new dimension in fashion design and show what 3d printing is actually capable of.
Dude, that's an amazing idea.. what if your glass bed surface had the holographic layer on it? Every print (assuming you didn't destroy the texture) would be holographic on the flat side.
@@Danuxsy Yeah, Sure but you can not go to a Party using Reflex!!. But You could use the jacket turned off. So you could only turn on the back of the jacket while you are riding.
@@Danuxsy A reflex vest does not serve the same purpose. A reflex vest does not produce its own light. In addition, the lighted jacket could easily be programmed to more clearly show things like turn signals more clearly. Also, going from casual wear/street wear and bike wear fluidly is not at all possible with a reflex vest. That isn’t even factoring in practical aspects such as wind protection and even armoured protection for riding. Ultimately, a reflex vest and this jacket could not be interchangeable when functioning as a bike jacket.
That shine wave at 20:26. This on a long dress, the shine effect when someone walks and the drapé follows smoothly with that incredible specular shine. Or even on long large hanging sleeves, like techno mage robe or something. This is awesome, we need more of it.
I love the creator showcase. Using the platform to highlight fellow artists, as well as seeing Adam's excitement about all the awesome stuff he himself isn't so familiar with is just awesome
This is the reason why I love looking at different skillset that is out of your major. Something like, as a graphic designer you can always learn something from an example a ballerina or a pilot. The technique may be so different but the dicipline is always the same.
I think videos like this are some of the most important ones this channel provides. It excites me to think of all the young designers you are inspiring by showcasing this kind of talent.
Sophy is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge. While most of us were still just fildding with swatches of tulle just trying to figure out optimal layer heights & best practices to get this to work at all Sophy was already miles ahead with numerous real world applications & developing that institutional knowledge and design philosophy. She's DEFINITELY my favorite person when it comes to wearable prints and one of my favorite makers in general. She always has an answer, and in many cases several answers with the various pros & cons for each approach.
I absolutely love the Show and Tell's Adam does with other makers! That is SUCH a good use of the platform, and gives us viewers new people to follow and appreciate! :)
As someone who went to art college, this video is a masterclass. It shows how artists create and reveals some important aspects of the creative process: the repetitive and iterative discovery of the aesthetic characteristics of the material; the acceptance of it as it is, not as a simulacrum of another material; the use of the unavoidable seams to create patterns instead of accepting it as a flaw, and the rebellion against the normal process of printing by inserting a net mid-process, or not using it as it was supposed to, submitting it to her desired outcome. These and Adam's last comment about knowing the direction after jumping head-first into the project make for a great interview!!!!
I really love these "Look and Ask" type episodes with other makers. It's a joy to watch them share their work and see Adam so excited about all the possibilities that have just been opened up to him. Sophy's work is beautiful and it was really interesting to see and hear about her iterative and explorative approach to creating it.
Adam, come a decade or two, I can foresee your Tested work being a bigger inspiration to creators and engineers and artists and more people generally, than your work with -- dare I say -- Mythbusters! Thanks so much Adam, your passion for all of this clearly shows in these videos, and it's obvious you have a clear vision of where you want yourself (and the community) to be, and are taking us all towards your vision! Thanks man!
fashion and cosplay are not my jam but that technique is still really fascinating. Its like she figured out how to apply a 3D modeling texture to a person.
That bit Adam said about something not working for a current project but has future potential is something I've always liked. "From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success."
This stuff really blows my mind. When I think about 3D printing, I think of the typical things that get printed. Mechanical parts and models to be painted, scaled down items, test items. Things with a functional purpose. These things on display in this video, however, have more of that artistic life sort of feel as opposed to the hardware feel of your typical 3D item. What Sophy and others like her are doing really is expanding what I imagine 3D printers doing and how creative they can really get. The flexible integration of that mesh fabric was just something else.
I absolutely LOVE it. My generation (boomer) celebrated the dawn of a new age. Now, half a century has passed, and you wonderful people have started the work day of the new age. This clothing you are inventing is so new, beautiful, innovative. Your generation is doing it. Thank you.
I'd never heard os Sophy Wong before. The stuff she's doing with 3D printing is amazing. The headress looked like something from the Star Wars universe and the glove looked like it would fit into Blade Runner. I could see Adam thinking about a new spacesuit design when he was wearing the glove. Thanks for sharing, Adam.
This is soo amazing. I wish I could see her shop and how she has it set up with all the different fabrics versus 3d printed items and so forth... It look soooo organized and amazing. This was great thank you
The garments are amazing I love them - but what I love more is hearing about the process, the interation approach and the knowledge, techniques that come from it. Really inspiring. Go Sophie!
This is so cool, thank you for highlighting Sophy Wong's work! If anyone is interested in a high-fashion version (in the sense that it's on the runway) of 3D printed garments, check out Iris Van Herpen's stuff.
adam always has the best hosts, thanks for telling us about her. I saw this kind of stuff before and didn't find it that interesting, but now that I get a closer look it's more exiting.
It is amazing to see what people are doing with 3D printing and how it is being used in completely unexpected ways. Combine that with the variety of filaments being created for people to use with their 3D printers and you get some really incredible objects.
when I first saw makers 3d print logos directly onto shirts I thought "ooh, this could be a game changer", but seeing it at this level I realize how much possibility there really is.
As a professional seamstress/costume designer for 45 years, THIS IS FREAKIN’ FANTASTIC!!!! The possibilities for this are mind blowing!!! Genious!! Pure Genious!! I am awe struck! Speechless! ( my three daughters will tell you I am never speechless! What mom with 3 daughters caring for 2 of my best friends daughters could be LOL!) the possibilities are infinite!
Love love love to see Sophy's work. She is a brilliant creator and so generous sharing her knowledge with so many tutorials on Adafruit, Make magazine and more. It would be THRILLING to see her work at the Met or in a movie. She is already creating work for music videos.
I love these episodes that showcases other makers. Very interesting how light reflects of these prints. I can imagine the fashion industry getting interested by this
Oh my God, I've been doing 3D modeling and design for as long as I can rememeber. More recently in the last year pivoting to 3D printing. I do all sorts of mechanical and quirky things. This is a technique that I have got to try. Amazing work and love it so much. Sophy Wong is now a new favorite inspiration.
This is amazing stuff. During the Pandemic I printed PETG masks over a dual layer cotton fabric and loved it. Love doing this and love love the jacket.

What was going through Adams mind was a lot more coherent than mine. My mind was just going ooooh, wow, shiiit. Sophy Wong never fails to blow my mind with her creations.
An easy way to test a design before you print it would be to use a cnc router to cut it out of a thin sheet of ridge foam glued to a fabric backer. Once the cnc router is finished, you can easily run a blade between the pieces to separate them. You probably wouldn't even need to do that if you get it thin enough from the cut, it wou just break as soon as it is flexed. This should be able to save you days of print time on redesigns.
I don’t know if Sophy Wong is still or at all reading the comments, but I bet the book Grid Index would be a great inspiration for different patterns. Besides that, I really love to see how far she pushes this technique to it‘s limits. Really inspiring!
I've always wanted a 3D printer but never found anything that I wanted to print bad enough to get one. I think I just found my new hobby. I'm in love with this!
Great imagination and eye opening application to the 3D print technique. Being a product designer that touch on a lot of consumer products, this concept of infusing 3D print on fabric would be really interesting.
