- In this video I give you my early thoughts on both the EGO select cut mower and the 80-volt Greenworks Pro mower. When this video was originally filmed I had only limited (1-2 months) experience in using both mowers. As time went by I quickly found that the Greenworks Mower was much more capable at handling touch conditions while the EGO mower was far better at mulching grass clippings.

Hi, I just got my greenworks today. I saw you said it doesn't fold and it is not that easy to storage. I found that not true. It folds the lever in the same manner like the ego one. You have to turn the buttons that alow you to change the hight of the lever (the three positions available) and push the lever towards the front of the machine. You get the same result like you had with the ego.

I store my 80v Greenworks vertically all the time. You're folding the wrong hinge. Hinge at the bottom near the deck has twist locks on each arm, then you drop it down. MAybe not as stone simple as the Ego, but stupid easy. Agree on the propulsion, but not as annoying as you make it out to be. I only use propulsion uphills, not when turning and whatnot. The Greenworks battery is either a 2 or 4 amp hour BTW (package I bought had both)

The designers at Greenworks were listening. The folding action is now as simple as on the Ego and the speed control is right in the middle of the handlebar.
You are mistaken. I have the new Greenworks 80V and it does NOT fold as easily as the Ego. The key difference is the Ego handle telescopes and the Greenworks does not. This allows the Ego to take up less vertical space and it is much easier to fold down because you don't need to bend over as far. This might not be a big issue for anyone who can fold the handles down from the front of the mower, but I store my mower in a nook in my garage. I have to fold the handles down from behind the mower and it just isn't nearly as nice as the Ego. I will admit the Gen2 version is better than the Gen1 in this regard, but it is still way behind the Ego.
I went with EGO and have no regrets. It’s absolutely incredible! This is after using a Silver Pro Series Lawnboy with a 6.5 HP two stroke engine for 21 years! ✌🏻👍🏻
Lots of good info, thanks. One item: I have rough uneven yards and was told that larger rear wheels are better for that terrain. It looks like the Green Works has larger rear wheels. Your thoughts?
Good points... they must have the sensors to increase run time since they are battery-powered, so there's a compromise on mulching, but I like that Ego addressed it with the X-pattern twin blades, and includes a third higher lift blade for bagging
They pretty much all have some type of a sensor and interestingly all brands seem to tout that feature as unique and helpful even though it's not that unique at all. That technology is used to rev down the blades and conserve a battery charge which is great for people with bigger lawns but lots of people have small lawns and they don't like to mow every 5 days so having the option to run at a higher RPM constantly at the sacrifice of battery consumption is the big feature most mowers are missing. The twin blade from EGO goes a long way at improving mulching at the lower blade rpm but simply giving me more RPMs in all situations would be better I think.
@@TurfMechanic hi Brian the Super Recycler 60 volt from Toro is finally the first mower that has a switch to enable either Auto or MAX for power. Comes with an economy and performance blade. Performance one is the same one off their gas SR.

Thanks for your video. I have other Ego brand equipment so I probably will stick to Ego when I get a mower. I like their dual battery mower that will hold two of their largest batteries at the same time. I heard the lights on the Ego most recent mower is much less bright that the lights on the older version. That's really too bad and unfortunate. Now Ego has their electric riding mower coming out soon, maybe it's available already?? Ego also has a huge 10 Amp/hr battery either coming out soon or already available? Enjoy!
I'm wondering how is the power of the greenworks compared to the corded version which I have been using for the past few years.
I love my green works duel 60v but only got one battery with mine what sucks love to have one more battery But I love the power it’s got and I can mow tall grass and a pretty big yard with it works awesome

Just got the ego select cut with 7.5 ah battery kit (LM2135SP) for 475 at home depot it was on sale, I didnt know it was I was expecting to pay 600+, so it was a good surprise.

I have the greenworks and no issues other than the remote doesn’t release right away when backing up. So far so good. Got the Costco model with two batteries and extra blade paid $499.00 on sale this week. Great price for a premium mower.
Agreed... now it has all the features the EGO has. Mine has useless battery drawing headlights too. What were they thinking? But works Great.

Ryobi smart trek/hart adaptive pace went from “weird and kinda clunky” to “this is how all self propel should be”. It’s a jolt but becomes extremely natural to use. It’s as close you can get to the feel of a push only in a self propel

10 years old! Love it. Have a Greenworks battery powered mower 40v (4Ah+2Ah battery pack) Dual Blade Mower (25302) that we bought in April of 2013. It has been a fantastic mower these past 10 years. Sadly, tho', ran it last week for 5 minutes to check it out and mowed a few leaves into lawn. Tried it again the next day, it briefly started and then stopped! Can't find someone to service it. Also, sounds like parts may be hard to come by. At 74, need a self-propelled. After reading TOO many reviews - I don't know which to go with the Eco or another Greenworks. UGH!

So exactly which model number is this EGO mower and exactly what battery does it have...it kinda makes a difference.
Technically, higher voltage doesn’t mean more power in and of itself. Amps (not AH, amp-hours) is the flip side of that coin and just as important. This is to say that all else being equal (internal resistance, equipment design, mechanical friction, etc.) a 56v system @ 20 amps is exactly the same as 80v @ 16 amps, so actually it's about wattage. The calculation is simple, Volts x Amps = Watts.
If you need 2,200 watts to run a lawnmower, there's infinite ways to get there.
36V x 61.1A = 2,200W
56V x 39.3A = 2,200W
108V x 20.4A = 2,200W
As long as you can draw enough current (amps) from the battery, you can get the same amount of power from any voltage.
While this may be true, higher voltage devices seem to be much more responsive in their operation.
Having a higher voltage battery means they are putting higher voltage through the motor. Which will make it more responsive/powerful for otherwise the same size wires and motors.
What I've seen some folk getting wrong is saying that the higher voltage motors having less amp hour in their battery is bad. That's just wrong, because your wat hours might be the same.
Yes, and kind No. ‘Geoffrey’ has a good comment, and is valid. Voltage IS voltage, but Amp draw is very important, as you noted. So, which is better? 80 Volt 2.5 Ah battery, or a 40Volt 5.0 Ah battery? Same watt hours. Ima gonna go with the 80 Volt. It wont run as long, but is the better alternative. I just got the Greenworks 25 inch 60v dual blade and most of the features that you state on the Ego, the Greenworks has as well.
I look forward to using that mower! A 25" wide battery mower with self propelled isn't found in any other mower I know of right now.
How long do the batteries last before you have to charge them? I am having the 40V Kobalt (mower, blower, weed eater) but the 20" cutting width of the kobalt is driving me nuts, and 40V doesnt seem to be enough power either. I have about 1/4 acre lawn, do you think its worth to upgrade to 25" 60V? Thanks
@@Kay-dx8vm I'd say about an hr with both batteries. It comes with a 4mah and a 2mah. That should be enough for a 1/4 acre lot. My lot is small so it only took 2 of 4 bars of the 4mah for my yard.

Son K it works fine for my needs. I can see how some folks might have a problem with the mulching since it doesn’t do a great job. I have St Augustine grass. My main concern is the battery since it’s expensive but the warranty the battery and motor for 4 yrs
Nice comparison. I love my ego. Literally all I've done is change the blade after 3 years and bought a bigger 10ah battery. I use a 5ah for my ego weed eater and blower. I have a 2.5ah but it's pretty much dead

Very nice review. One thing I want to point out though is that manufacturers are misleading people. Volts alone doesn't measure power. Volts times amps equals power! (Measured in watts) If two mowers seem equally powerful, but have different voltages, it is because the lower voltage mower is using more amps. One is no better than the other. It is simply a ratio. Another deceiving thing is the battery size, measured in Amp/hrs. Think of that as the size of the gas tank, however, these two mowers will use the amps at different rates. Amps per hour capacity does not equate to run time. Check the manufacturers rated run time and watts rating for power. The eGo may bog down easier because it is mulching with 2 blades. It is also designed to run on one blade also, f you don't care about mulching. New subscriber!

By ur comparison of 2020's best lawns, u point on the Greenworks to be ur most favorite one. In this video u like the ego more. Im confused? I made this video maybe 2-months before I made my best battery mower video; in this one I was still new to both machines. After using them more through the summer and into August I settled on the Greenworks mower as being my favorite mostly due to it's power which I need for my yard. The EGO probably does mulch better and they offer a high lift blade sold separately which would probably make bagging better but for me power is more important in my somewhat low cut thick turf and in my extended yard where thick field grasses and weeds need to be cut regularly. I don't like the lag on the Greenworks self-propulsion bar and I do like the Touch Drive button on the EGO model a lot but overall I still prefer the GW for pure power. The EGO with 10ah battery will last a long time but if battery length isn't a concern for you then I'd go for a push only version of Snapper XD, a plain Self-propelled or push only Toro 60V Recycler or the 80V greenworks. Whichever is on sale is probably the best value. The Snapper systems come with two small batteries which work really well and can be swapped out almost forever without delay so that's a cool option.

I wonder if the green works has the same "safety" features which is what probably caused it to Stahl. Most of the larger pieces of ego equipment have a limit switch that will cut power when the load hits a certain level. Stops you from tearing everything apart or stripping gears

A new sub right here, I really like and appreciate your content! Electric mowers are intriguing but I will stay with my Honda until it is no longer serviceable. It has so much power and mulches with ease. One thing to note is the batteries are expensive when they die. My Sister has Ego stuff over the past 7 or so years and says the batteries die right around the 3 year mark when the warranty is up. She likes the Ego stuff a lot as it works well and is easier to use then gas stuff. I think she paid $300 for a smaller battery than what she needed.
Glad to have you here! Yeah, if you or anyone else already has a working gas unit I'd never suggest switching unless you wanted to sell off the gas unit used to take advantage of the simplicity of the battery units. I've yet to own a battery mower for three full years but so far I haven't had any of my mower batteries die from any of the brands I own. I'd expect batteries from the 7-year ago timeframe to perform poorly compared to batteries of today but we'll probably say the same thing 7 years from now about today's batteries :D I may be upgrading my mower this coming season and selling off my used battery units. Later in Dec or Jan I want to poll my subs about which unit you all would like to see me pushing around for a lot of the 2023 season. Hope you'll be there for that even though you're a gas guy. :)

I understand it’s because the EPA regulations and they don’t want to invest in R&D since there isn’t much margin in mowers anyway. Battery powered units will continue to get better.
Yeah, that's pretty crazy to see them dropping out but they haven't ever made a push to battery over the past decade and now with robot mowers it almost seems too late for them to jump in. I wish I could do a poll with a bunch of options for the mower so I may have to do a few of them and then compare along with comments. I buy virtually everything I use on this channel so I think viewers opinions are important for what I choose to buy...it not everything but it is important.

I wanted full power all the time so i got the greenworks 13 amp 21" corded electric. Its so light that self propelsion is not needed, no battery and more power than any of the battery electric mowers.
Mowed my front lawn with the Greenworks. It hardly used any battery. (Small yard) I had the larger battery inside.

For a small flat yard I'd buy the 19" Snapper 82v mower every time. It's very low cost and although it's not the best I think it provides the most value and will rarely disappoint.

I've had a Greenworks 21-inch 80v for 7 years and it has never let me down. It can mulch grass 12 in high. Just used it the last 2 days to mow 1.5 acres since my zero turn is inoperable.
Because of the extreme reliability of these 80v batteries, I'm considering the Greenworks zero turn to replace my Ryobi lead-acid zero turn which is been a complete disappointment.
How well does the Greenworks mulch?

I hear and believe the newest ego mowers are better and stronger than the one I have which is from the 2020 season. I haven't tried the newest units out though, im resisting the urge to review mowers, it's too much for me right now 😅

I like that your review emphasized the ease and comfort of use. That EGO mower seemed a bit heavy when you tilted it back. Does it weigh more than the Greenworks? I have a Greenworks 19" mower that I've been using for 5 seasons now. It's not self-propelled, and I almost prefer that. I wouldn't mind a bit wider cut, but I wouldn't want the mower to be a lot heavier. But maybe it's a moot point, because I have four 40V batteries that I use for the Greenworks mower, chainsaw, and a brush cutter, and am no hurry to get into another battery and charger system unless there is some really compelling reason. Still, I think about it, or I wouldn't be watching reviews like this.
The controls on greenworks is pretty terrible. That power sensing your referring to is a hall sensor in the motor, it tracks RPM level, torque, motor load and adjusts output to keep consistency.
Are both bodies of them made of plastic or steel?
I got green works twin blade and hate it because it keeps getting grass clogged up.
Are you talking about the 25" greenworks? I'm somewhat interested in that one, haven't tried it yet though.
Turf Mechanic no the 20 inch
Unless you are cutting bamboo the 56v Ego is more than enough for most lawns. I have the single blade 21" 56v Ego and it is a really sweet mower. In fact any battery mower should be on par with gas models (unless it is some weird off brand). Stay away from corded models as they are not worth the money and resale will suck. Greenworks or Ego are from my experience the benchmarks of battery mowers it goes down to personal preferences.
One thing I would add is the manufacturer's other tools that share the same battery/charging system. Ego has come out with a snowblower but I am not sure if the battery compartment is insulated or heated. If the temperature is around -25°c or colder you will dramatically loose run time, -20°c or warmer the run time is about normal (used the leaf blower in the winter).
Lots of goodies in that comment, thanks. Even still I must say that I regularly bog down my EGO in my lawn when I let it grow 5 to 6 days. The other big mowers get through it fine, but ego is always threatening to stall. Its a great mower but if you let your grass get overgrown or you just have thick turf then its just not the right option imo.
I own the ego, haven't tried the green works, but I swear the ego's self propelled also ramps up to speed and it's annoying as hell too..maybe it's just mine? Maybe there's a setting I'm missing? Maybe it's both mowers with that issue?

For this generation of mowers I'd choose the 80v GW for the raw power but the newest generation of mowers I think the EGO is better...although I haven't tried it in my own yard, only seen other people thoughts and reviews on it.
Seeing is believing. A better review format would be to have a thick lawn, do two lines with each mower first-person-view recording, then show up close the results side by side. That way we can see and hear the results for ourselves, and finally you can do things like a runtime test using the timelapse feature on your phone.
This was one of the earliest vids I made on this channel. I have a number of followups that show some of that. I'm getting out of mower reviews this year though, the market changes so fast and I never let my lawn get overgrown so comparing side by side is hard for me to do without changing the way I manage my lawn. I was skeptical until I used my father in laws 80v greenworks. It was so lightweight I could mow with almost no effort. Longevity Im not sure but if I got 4-5 years out of one Id call it a success at this point. I paid $400 for a toro recycler that has fallen apart and bogs down easily. Id say its a win and at $70 a cut to hire someone it pays for itself in less than a month.
I still have to remind myself that GW80v is as strong as I know it is; you're right, the weight and simple-factor make you want to believe it's just a run-of-the-mill mower even though it's not. I have no idea how long it will hold up but so far I'm in about 11 months with mine and I've beat it up on my hills and it's still going strong.
I've had my greenworks 80v for 3 years now no issues. I don't see why it won't last 10+ years.
4-5 years is a success? That would be a HUGE failure. My toro is going on 20 years now. The lawnboy I had before that lasted about 20 years..
One thing you didn’t mention was cut heights green works has much more settings for height and that’s way I sold my EGO just wouldn’t go low enough
interesting, I wonder if you have a different model EGO, I've always felt that this mower went slightly lower than the 80v greenworks. I can't check any more, I sold this mower off when we moved last fall.

My big problem with Greenworks is that they have too many battery platforms - I don't want to buy an 80v mower and then have to buy a 20/40/60v string trimmer/blower etc
Ego found the right balance with a 60V battery that can be light enough (with the 2.5Ah variant) for a string trimmer, and still powerful enough for a mower. Just a shame that Ego don't make a dethatcher
Me too, I'm annoyed about the seemingly competing 60 and 80 volt lines but so far I'm very happy with their 80v tools. I'm using their 80v mower, blower and edger now and looking to pick up the 80v trimmer too. Ego is nice but I've enjoyed the GW line enough to gravitate towards it.

They do a 40v mower and for small lawns it’s fine. I’ve had one for 5 years no issues and cuts really well, get about two mows per charge, so if I forget to charge it there is enough for next time, also run their chainsaw off same battery. They went to bigger batteries for bigger lawns but this might be overkill it really depends how big your lawn is. I use mulching plug and never had any issues even with long wet grass. It automatically increases revs with longer grass. I’m in NZ and EGO here is like double the price of the Greenworks one.

You said it stalled.....the EGO has 2 blades...does the Greenworks also have 2 blades?
The Ego is the select cut version with two cris,cross blades and the greenworks has only a single (conventional) blade. Egos rpm is a pinch lower 2700 rpm too so it does great at mulching with the dual blade at that speed in normal moowing conditions but in those thicker patches I think the extra blade drag with the lower rpm and lower peak power just bog it down more than the greenworks.
I purchased an EGO self propelled mower in May. During each cutting session there are a few incidents where there is a sudden "shudder" or unusual vibration and the blade scalps the grass often hitting the dirt leaving an semi circular unsightly patch on the lawn. The lawns are flat. I complained to Home Depot and they replaced the mower in July..... only to have the same thing happen 4 + times on the first cut. I never had any problems like this while using a gas mower. I love the mower BUT! HELP!!! Any one else having similar problems. Any suggestions???
Lance Foreman J got one from Home Depot yesterday , took it home charged it this morning i tried to cut the grass nothing wouldnt cut anything weeds weere still standing .
The blade on this mower is .11 inches thick, it will flex a bit and could dig into the lawn like you have described. Ive only seen this happen significantly on the mowers with thinner blade like the SunJoe 100v or my 40v Earthwise. If you want a sturdier blade the Toro 60-volt has a robust .13 inch thick blade and it is barely flexible. That will stop those circles you are finding in your lawn.

Both of those mowers should let you override that adjustable power mechanism. I don’t like how the EGO mulches grass. It really doesn’t mulch well at all. It leaves large blades of grass on the ground. I want to mulch and not see any grass (or leaves in the fall) laying on the ground. I certainly don’t want to go over the lawn twice to accomplish this with the EGO. I had a Snapper gas mower that did that. It chopped everything up so fine, you really could not see anything on the lawn.
I think these electric mowers have improved a lot over the years, but they have a lot of improving yet to do. For now, I’m going to stick with my gas mower.
These are some of the older model mowers now and I'm noticing more new model mowers give you the override option which is usually labeled turbo or something similar. Also the ego has their special mulching blade vs their run time blade vs their high lift blades. The mulching blade does what you want best bur still, the newer model machines will work better than the one I own and featured in this video. Lastly, im a Snapper fan too! 👊
Ego is hard plastic where Greenworks is metal. Greenworks comes with two batteries at $599 (costco) where ego has one at $699 (lowes).

I measured that with a decibel meter about 4 years ago and can't remember...but I can tell you that they are nearly exactly the same on the quiet scale. I'll also say these are four year old mowers. I have never upgraded to a newer version of either but both are still working perfectly all these years later.
Voltage really doesn’t make a difference as much as the wattage of the motors and how it uses the power
Let me be honest with you. One of the biggest reasons i like your videos is that you are not pushing products. Gci grass seed, super juice, mat martin, green county fertilizer, etc, milorganite, etc, throw er down boys, . It just seems slimy for them to pitch products without letting you know they are sponsored. I think you pitch products, but only ones you truely believe in. Like natural products. I believe in organic as well. So good job being credible. Also i cant wait for. The. Grass season to start.
saw on another review that the batteries on the greenworks lose charging capacity with repeated charging unless the batteries are removed asap from charger once fully charged, and very expensive to buy new batteries…is this true of all battery operated mowers?
I haven't noticed this effect yet on any of my battery mowers and I've been using a variety of battery mowers for more than two years now.

Volts is for how long it will run and amps is the power
actually inaccurate about how the greenworks one folds... you do not unscrew anything. you pull the 'plugs' at the bottom and fold. its actually not that bad.
Too bad you didn't do some actual mowing. All this ergonomic stuff is so subjective. One reviewer hated the Ego variable speed adjustment and loved the Greenworks lever. I have a Greenworks on the way, but I would probably be fine with either one.

Just so everyone knows, that greenworks is the exact same mower as the kobalt 80v. The batteries are also identical, except the pinout for the contacts (god forbid there be cross compatibility)
Pin out is IDENTICAL. It is the plastic slots, on the side, that are different.
The EGO has a higher wattage motor from my understanding.
I'm preparing a comparison of the Snapper 82v and the ego select cut so ill pull the EGO manual to check but I think its motor is only 1000 watts whereas the Snapper runs at 1200 watts with their 21" models. I need to find that wattage number for Greenworks, ill update when I have it. Simple fact of the matter is that no matter how good the EGO is ive stalled it in thick grassy weeds a couple of times but I've never stalled the Greenworks 80v or the Snapper for that matter.

@@TurfMechanic So an electric motor does not "stall" the same away a gas engine will. Your Ego is probably shutting off the motor because it's overheating to avoid damaging the motor and/or the lithium ion battery.

But the Greenworks mower you have here is generation 1. The 2nd generation added a turbo button and moved the location of the self propel, there’s a few other changes as well. But the turbo button claims a blade speed of 4500rpm. I have the Ego Select Cut XP but just bought a renewed Greenworks 80v for $350 shipped. Comes with a 4.0 and 2.0. But the MAIN thing I wanted that the Ego lacks is a proper side discharge.

But you said the ego stalled out on the hill, why would you use it on the hill again ? 😂
I have a patch on my hill over the septic that grows very fast and thick. If I let it get overgrown it's easy for me to test if a mower can get through it compared to another mower. I was able to stall the ego on that patch easily. When I normally cut the hill though I don't let it get overgrown and the ego does just fine. This year however I've started using the 25" greenworks 60v mower on the front hill to cover more ground in the same amount of time.
Ryobi is way easier to fold than the Ego, plus lifetime warranty on plastic deck. Seems like Ryobi is advancing over Ego.
The original eGO does a terrible job of bagging!
