    Once you've mastered the start and finish position of the forehand topspin, you can start to focus on finer details. In this video we talk about the position of your legs, weight transfer, varying the finish position, incorporating footwork, the use of your wrist, and the angle of your bat for the stroke.
    Thanks for watching! We love making table tennis videos and hope they'll help you understand the game of table tennis. Make sure you subscribe to keep up with our latest videos. You can also follow us through:

      +rvsd44 We see a lot of people who when starting out really swing the bat way across the body so we find this direction really helps people understand how the stroke should look and feel. As long as you finish up nice and high then you can come across slightly.

    What is the best way to return a fast low ball top spin? Should I block or should I loop kill?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can loop it back then go for it. It is a difficult shot which is why a lot of people choose to block the ball back.

    • @Khrylezon
      @Khrylezon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PingSkills... That's true.. It's very difficult to loop kill a fast top spin but very low ball... It always goes into the net or off the table otherwise... Thanks. I think it's better to block that shots.

    • @jeffplumb8870
      @jeffplumb8870 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's certainly more likely to go back on the table! But as I said, if you feel confident and can execute the counter attack then it's far more devastating.

    • @RobertoCostas
      @RobertoCostas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Close the angle of the bat as much as you can and maximize the speed of the arm movement. In case the ball still comes down directly into the net, move the bat more vertically.

    I noticed that Jeff has a rather small snap of the forearm during his topspin. The angle between the forearm and the upper arm is almost the same before and after the stroke. He compensates for the potential lack of power with a good body rotation but it might still be a thing to keep an eye on for further instructional videos.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good observations. This can vary between top level players. Most of the Chinese have a longer backspin extending the elbow but some Europeans like Timo Boll have a much smaller backswing and use their rotation.

  • @AANasseh
    @AANasseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You said not to cross the midline in the forehand top spin but in every shot you hit you crossed it. Was that an ideal statement or a practical one as the hand crosses the nose in every forehand top spin I see in this video!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main point is to make sure you don't swing too low and lose the shape and therefore the consistency of your stroke. Also note that as the body twists so does that middle line.

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. But wouldn't the head rotate along with the body twisting? Seems to me the relationship of the cervical and thoracic spine would stay the same on the pelvis. Thank you for your reply! I'm going to become a member to your site. You have excellent videos!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome. Yeah the main point is to keep the finish position up high near your forehead. As soon as you swing low and across your body the stroke becomes very inconsistent.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SKhuder AQW Unfortunately it is not allowed. You must throw the ball up without imparting spin on it.
      It certainly does generate more spin when you do this but I guess that is why they banned it.

  • @sughidev7596
    @sughidev7596 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    6:15 min the blue 👕 couch he is crossing the centre of the body while hitting the topspin ball which comes with a block

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice to see you taking notice. The bat can go past a little bit and the stroke will still be consistent and this is fine as a technique. The main point about not crossing the line is to ensure you don't go right across your body which a lot of players tend to do when learning the stroke, as this will cause the stroke to be very inconsistent.

  • @KidLightning33
    @KidLightning33 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    amazing video! my only question is that you recommend not to cross "center line" on the loop forehand finish position, but it looks like you cross the center line on the bigger forehand loop stroke every time.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The center line is really just to highlight not going across your body too much. If you pass it just a little bit that is fine.

  • @RobertoCostas
    @RobertoCostas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen trainers advising their players to move the bat leg forward while hitting de ball. I think it's unnecesary if you correctly transfer your body weight from leg to leg and that it compromises your balance and the recovery of the legs for the next stroke. What do you think about that?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly is important to maintain your balance, hence I like the weight transfer not to be from your back leg to your front leg. However sometimes when people are hitting the ball really fast they can jump into the ball.

      Between the middle and the edge of the rubber is a good spot. Having said that, experiment yourself and see what results you get from hitting the ball in different spots. There's nothing like seeing the results yourself for learning something like this. It's great to see you thinking about these things. Keep up the good work!

    great information thanks. I've always had trouble with proper technique on my forehand. Just a few questions though. Does this technique change for close to table or far from table hitting? Also what changes for hitting backspin other than angle of the stroke?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rocky s Great questions. The basic technique stays the same but if you are closer to the table you may need to shorten your swing a little since you'll have less time. And if you are further away you can lengthen it a little. Against backspin you need to swing a bit more vertically to counter the spin. Take a look at our Forehand Topspin Against Backspin video for more details on this. You can find all the videos nicely presented in order on the PingSkills website. Let me know if this helps out. Good luck with your table tennis.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good observation. We mention this to make sure that players aren't bringing their swing way across their body. As long as the bat finishes quite high and you don't go too far past the stroke will be more consistent.

    I have got a faster racquet, palio expert2 and now i am having hard time playing powerful strokes. All i am able to do is block, or sometime play half hearted strokes. Can you suggest some ways i can adjust quickly. With my previous racquet, i was able to play so many shots, from different positions and now if i am not in position i always miss time it. Looks like margin of error is very less.

      With a faster rubber it can seem like it is hard to control but once you get used to it and are able to trust yourself to play full shots, you will then be able to generate the topspin on the ball which will give you the extra margin for error for attacking strokes. Take a look at this answer to a question and see if it helps you: www.pingskills.com/table-tennis-forum/adjusting-myself-with-new-bat
      You can always leave a comment on the website if you have further questions. Good luck with your new bat. I have heard it is a good bat.

    are there any differences in doing this when using a tacky and a grippy rubber? I was using grippy rubbers for 3 years then i'm planning to change my rubber. Thank you for the reply.

    What are the approximate BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES that you use for your OPENING LOOP against HEAVY BACKSPIN? And how do these same angles compare to the BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES you personally use for your COUNTER-LOOPS against HEAVY TOPSPIN?

    I've an issue with forehand.. I've just started playing table tennis a year ago...
    Whenever I try to make forehand smash, i kinda brush the ball for top spin which means i can't hit the ball flat.. That's why I lack speed in forehand smash which is definitely not good... I've tried to flatten the contact but most of the time it goes off table if I try to be more flatter..

    In the past i have tried to add a bit of wrist movement (as you suggest here), but found it threw my timing off. Is there an easy way to get started with that? Also, I could be wrong, but is this the first video where I see Alois hitting shots?!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zazen forever I don't think you really need to focus too much on the wrist if it is throwing your timing off. The key is to relax it and let it work naturally.
      Alois has done the hitting in other videos too. You can see them all easily on the PingSkills website.

    Nice tutorial! I'd like to see a Very Advanced Tutorial with emphasis on more power. You're leaving some power behind when not extending the arm fully on the back-swing. The instructions here are more "whip like" and closer to Timo Boll's style than Ma Long's.

    Hi Alos, I noticed that Jeff's arm is bent at a 90 degree angle at the bottom of his backswing, yet most of the Chinese instruction videos I see (and Brett Clark"s) show the arm fully extended. Is this just a matter of personal preference?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zazen forever It is a matter of personal preference. As you mention a lot of the Chinese have the arm straight and Alois generally prefers this. Some of the Europeans have there arm bent more. Do you have a preference yourself? If not go for the shot with the arm extended a bit and see how it goes.
      Cheers,
      Jeff.

      Put your two hands together in front of you. This is about the distance you want to hit the ball away from your body.

    So, Jeff obviously has a bent arm loop with his elbow bent at 90 degrees. Many others advocate a straight arm loop (Brett Clarke, for one). What are advantages/disadvantages of either? Its hard for me to get a lot of power with a bent arm loop. Am i doing something wrong? Thanks.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Zazen, I like to have my arm bent at the start as I feel I get more control like this. A lot of European players have forehands like this. Alois though starts with his arm much straighter and more Chinese players play their forehands like that. If you feel more comfortable then start with your arm straighter. In fact Alois generally recommends this too. Great question! Good luck improving your forehand.
      Cheers,
      Jeff.

  • @deuce25ab

    Thanks a lot great video :D. I just have one question which nobody can seem to answer, I get too much sidespin on the ball and players at my club say that is not a good thing. I'm an intermediate player so I can control the sidespin but I can't seem to get straight forehand topspin shots there's always a little sidespin to it. This problem is only for my forehand and i'm a lefty. Please suggest something I can do to tackle this problem.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ahmed Bilal Getting sidespin is not a problem if that's what you mean to do. The sidespin is caused by the bat being on an angle and it's often because you've locked your wrist. If you try and relax you wrist then you should be able to hit the ball with your wrist not on an angle and get just topspin. Let me know if this helps.

    • @mayankgupta2543

      And one reason which I think is that you hit ball close to your body when it is in front of you.
      To hit pure top spin you will need to let ball come to your side or if it is coming towards to your body you need to move away to make space so that ball comes to your side and there is arm length gap and then you hit.
      I think i am slightly late in replying

    i have a question regarding the forward force
    are you using the turning of the body primarily for the forward force? or does the shoulder/arm also turn forward just a bit? it seems like arm basically snaps and adds spin and the turning of the body delivers most of the forward power? is that correct?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a combination of all that you mention. We like to call it the summation of forces.

    Hey Alois I'm a J-pen player and I'm wondering when to block and when to forehand topspin. I know Ryu Seung Min used (well he's a fat middle aged man now so he can't) his lighting fast footwork across the table to forehand topspin but he also blocked as well. How did he make the decision to forehand topspin or to block? How did would he come to the conclusion that he wouldn't be able to forehand topspin in certain situations?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was an incredible player. I think he tried to attack at every opportunity. Even when he blocked it was a fast block! I think that you try and topspin when you feel confident and have time for the bigger swing. When you have less time that's when to use the block.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we need to be a bit more precise with our instructions :) The main point regarding the centre line is to ensure players don't come right across their bodies as this causes the stroke to become inconsistent and we see many beginners making this mistake. That's why we provide that advice. If you go past a little bit it is fine but we like players to start by ensuring the stroke starts low, ends high and not too far across the body.

      There is no one suitable racket. It comes down to personal preference. And once you have a decent racket the most important thing is to keep improving your technique.

    Why do you guys bend your arm instead of straightening it out for more bat speed? Just curious.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to start with my arm bent as I feel I have more control that way but certainly you can start with your arm straight and then when you bend it you get even more bat speed. Alois tends to play more like this. Cheers, Jeff.
