In wive carrying competition you don't need to carry your actual wive and any female will do. However, the winning price is as much beer your "wive" weights😂
Before mobile phone throwing there was (and still is) rubber boot throwing. Nokia made both, so it's a natural transition :-) Mostly these are humor, but I think one reason why we invent weird sports is that we can be the best in the world in them. Finns used to be very good in long distance running in the 20's when we were recovering from brutal civil war, and it became an important think for national self esteem. Later we were good in things like javelin and ski jumping. These days it's difficult to be best in actual sports, but we can invent ridiculous ones that nobody else does :-)
And I absolutely love and enjoy those weird Finnish sports! I'm super happy they exist and it's super fun to review them. I definitely have to see one of them live. :)

Some say "air sex" competition was invented in Japan, but in 2003, before Japanese, there was a Finnish comedy show Ranuan Kummit which had a sketch called "air fucking Finnish championships 2002 - ilmanussinnan SM 2002".
Being finnish, the only ones I knew were wife carrying and air guitar. A guy I know won the air guitar competition when he was young. You should check out Mölkky and Kyykkä. Mölkky is one of those games you play in the summer at your summer cabin with your friends. Kyykkä has academic world championship contest at Tampere, all the universities compete at Hervanta university of technology.
The announcer said in the mosquito hunting that the killed bugs equals the amount of bites. Usually not. when you're waiting for them to land on your arms and legs, you usually catch most of them before they manage to bite - or more like sting with a 'trunk'. Their mouth is like a straw of sorts. The insect who injects, a compound that prevents the blood from coagulating. Then it sucks. The problem is not how to catch them here in the north, my Mediterranean friend noted the Finnish ones are very slow compared to their mosquitoes - though they do sometimes avoid the slaps. The problem is that usually you want to spend your day doing something else than wait for them, and then they sneak on you.
@@TootsieBlabber OK: correction: Southern Mediterranean then. The man who told me this was an Israeli living in Finland. So there are faster mosquitos in some parts of the Mediterranean.

But because the rules didn't limit the style, some sporty people came up with this style risking the lady's head. Yeah, they do gasp some water occasionally. Then they must hold on tight and spit it out during the rest of the run. There's a slight catch with the prize, the reward. Namely it is the weight of your wife in beers. So, a dilemma arises: a small 'wife' to carry: to win it - or a bigger 'wife', to get more beer? Tough decision.
