  • Sammy Miller had tweaked the rocket in Vanishing Point to try and beat the 3.7 second rocket car record of Kitty O'Neil. He only managed a 4.73 but succeeded in shattering virtually every window pane in Santa Pod's control tower!!! timetraveldvds.blogspot.co.uk/

I remember being there and reckon that the glass hit the track before he completed the run! Probably the most remarkable sight I have ever seen in motor sport. The bang from the rocket engine produced a huge shock that shattered the windows. Amazing.

Miller what a legend...he still has the fastest terminal speed and elapsed time on a drag strip anywhere in the World....he use to stay in the same hotel as us in Wellingborough and we chatted with him on many occasions....and without a shadow of doubt, him, Jim Reed and Dave Grady were three of the nicest guys you're ever likely to meet in drag racing....may they all be resting in peace !.....by the way Miller's fastest time in the 80's at Santa Pod was 3.58 secs elapsed time at 386 mph ,and I was lucky enough to be stood on the banking that day !

You won't even see the car and the bulk of the second you will, your eyeballs experience serious pressure and you hair could get burnt. No. You won't find her quarter mile time/speed was ever officially ratified by any governing body (either NHRA or FIA) because it did not meet the relevant stipulations. She did set the absolute speed record for a woman driver (a two-way average of 512.71mph) but the FIA only recognises the outright LSR. It doesn't have separate classes by gender.

What has Kitty's time got to do with POLLUTION PACKER? One iteration of that car was wrecked and its driver Dave Anderson killed at Charlotte Motor Speedway in March 1974. Vern Anderson drove another (a different car) to the FIA record in August of that year at Bonneville. That is listed on the official FIA site. Kitty's claimed e.t. didn't occur until 3 years later. Did I mention I have the FIA printout from Dick Keller who built Sammy Miller's engines ? And the BLUE FLAME .
Kitty's engine was a Tony Fox rocket in the POLLUTION PACKER
I make T shirts of these cars .

@@NCOGNTO Thanks for the link. A mere statement in a video commentary is not proof. If the FIA printout you have confirms the 3.22 e.t. then why does it not show up in their OFFICIAL World Record listing for Category C Group TH Class RT Rocket Thrust Propulsion? AFAIK the car she drove to that time was Ky Michaelson's 'Rocket Kat'. It the Fox rocket motor in that car was previously fitted to POLLUTION PACKER that Vern Anderson drove to the FIA official quarter mile WR in August 1974 at Bonneville, so what? It doesn't therefore follow that the FIA somehow recognises her e.t. as the current record.
