I consider myself bougie. I don’t think I’m better than anyone else, but I like nice things and carry myself in a manner where people have to come to me correct. I value myself and my time and require people to treat me as such. I personally don’t mind when people call me bougie. My opinion and my experience - black people use the term “bougie” to be extremely negative towards black women because of their own insecurities. It’s used to tear us down and hold us back. I have been called bougie because I “went to college”, “moved away from my hometown”, “have goals”, etc. It’s honestly stupid. I refuse to let people who have chosen not to live outside of their bubble make me feel as if something is wrong me because I chose to live outside of what I grew up seeing. Being bougie shouldn’t be negative to those of us who are being called bougie. It’s only negative to those who refuse to grow. Let them be the negative ones and let us embrace the bougie life we worked hard for.

I prefer “classy” than “bougie”, bougie is a backhanded compliment usually and its definitely from people’s insecurities. A lot of times the very people calling a woman bougie are the condescending bougie ones in my experience.

I agree. Classy usually means “I look up to you” (like they wish they were classy too or I want to be friends with you because I need more classy friends while bougie is, “You ask for too much or you're extra (and I don't think you deserve it)”.

They want to fit us in a box because boxes that folks can file away makes them feel comfortable and organized. When you can't be placed in a stereotype box, then they have to actually see you as a fellow/complex human being. It blows their mind that a woman with brown/black skin that they grew up feeling inadvertently (or purposefully) superior to via means of familial anti-blackness tropes, social obsession with skin color and loose/long hair,to media - has now broken all those molds they put previous bw in. Their minds simply can't take it.
You don't want to dance, cuss, and be loud at their will? It annoys them.

The reason it's so problematic is because they constantly place the bougie black woman in spaces with no other bougie people, let alone black people. When you mix classes you have certain issues like with the show Moesha. It's hard to explain but the black community has no concept of class differential. This is why so many of the men think they are entitled to the attention of a successful black woman when they themselves are bus drivers. There wouldn't be a problem if there were more healthy, well rounded bougie black women shown enjoying life with other bougie women and affluent men in a sitcom or movie. The fact that there's always some issue that is usually adjacent to the lower class people in her circle let's me know that she's in the wrong environment. I dont know I just feel like it's done intentionally.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think what you're calling a class issue is more likely a cultural one. I've only ever heard black women speak disparagingly of bus drivers for example. The cultural difference also explains the supposed "Black Wife Effect" too.

I feel like there’s a difference when you talk about the boujie black womens you mentions. To put it, there’s the high-value women ( the one who, looks good, genuine, has or finds a man that will be there for the man that tries his hardest to make her happy and have goals chase them by being productive instead of clubbing it up all the time) vs the low-value women (the bad bitch)(no goals, attention seeker, shit personality, only money driven, gold digger, and usually going after the wrong men who treats them garbage).

@@davruck1I'm white and have been trying to figure out why black men and women seem to constantly be at each other's throats. Part of the problem seems to be the disconnect between what black women and men find "high value". (BTW I want to note that seeing people describe themselves or others as "high value" is absolutely bizarre to me.) I purposely just said "men" there instead of "black men" there because black women seem think the amount of money they make makes them high value to men, but no man (regardless of race) particularly cares about that. A woman's personality, general demeanor and looks matter more than anything to pretty much every man on the planet.

I can relate! I haven’t really had an issues with black men. (Dusties are invisible to me. So I don’t see nor care about their thoughts lol)
But I do get push back from other black women for having standards.
But I do think in some cares some black women can be bougie, but it doesn’t mean you can be rude to people. There needs to be a balance. I think a lot of the negative stereotypes come from black women that may have resources, but they act and treat people as if they are better and others are beneath them. And because of that, any black women with class or resources gets treated and looked at as such regardless of who they really are. It’s a shame. But we gotta start speaking up for ourselves more I guess lol

Given that in this video bougie black women think they're great, have "an energy that makes everyone look at them when they walk into a room", are the originators of pretty much all popular fashions, are "amazing", and are the "stars of everyone's life around them" (!) do you understand how people may get the idea that bougie black women think they're better than others? You yourself refer to "dusties" who are "invisible" to you. Are you getting push back from other black women for having standards or for coming off as conceited and overly self-satisfied?
I'm not trying to criticize black women for seeking material prosperity; I wouldn't criticize anyone for that. That being said I think some bougie black women should reel in the "how awesome are we?" talk a bit. It rubs people the wrong way and to some absolutely reeks of insecurity.

You guys think the most minuscule things make a woman cocky, entitled, or seeking someone else’s money. I don’t struggle with dating or finding a man that wants me and will easily provide me with anything I want. My goal is to be with someone on a deeper level besides the materialistic and surface aspects. Black men primarily tend to try to bring down confident black women period. We can’t show an ounce of confidence without y’all thinking it’s entitlement or cockiness. And I promise it’s not all black men because the black men in my life love the aura I give and the confidence I have. It’s definitely not white men either because they love a confident sister. How about we all come together and stop trying to bring each other down? We get that enough from outside of our race. Good day.

@@ToniBryanneTV Exactly! Black men always tried to bring me down by insulting me or calling me names because of how I carry myself. Why should I settle for less than i give in a relationship? There is nothing wrong with wanting someone who can match me in every aspect. Thankfully I was able to find that in my husband who happens to be Asian.

You basically proved her point. You hate her confidence and the fact that she knows what she likes and doesnt bend that for anything. Its not entitlement its knowing your worth. Money and financial security should everyones goal. Maybe if you worked on your own financial insecurities your manhood wouldn’t be rooted in breaking confident women down.

"No-one expects the Black woman to achieve this level of excellence"... Tracey Chapman, Tyra Banks, Diana Ross (that sparkly dress), Tina Turner, Sade, Skin from Skunk Anansie, Grace Jones, Whitney Houston, Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Nina Simone, Missy Elliott, Lisa Lopez, Beyonce, Noami Campbell, Ella Fitzgerald, W.Goldberg, lizzo.. These were/are famous, glamorous, wealthy, positively portrayed, black women who embody what being a successful woman is. Yet they stay humble. I truly don't think boujee is restricted to a race or gender as I see it portrayed in all and even see it in public.
I see you are mostly honing in on TV Personalities to define the boujee meaning and that does make sense, however it is a large sweeping statement from the start by you. I thought I'd add a bit more context to add depth... I get that we are talking about "presentation" of boujee in the fact they got all that and more going on and I love confidence (a person with confidence can be seen as intimidating to those with none, be it male or female) but sometimes that exceeds the competence or comes across as you say a bit snobbish or Bratty.
If you have haters I hope it's likeky because they can't knock you, or just poor at communicating their differing views without trying to enforce it upon others.
