Used to own a very late model LSE 4.2 V8. Best car I ever had - by far. Cost me a bloody fortune, but it was worth every penny 😁😊😊 Miss it like crazy. Replaced the air suspension with progressive springs and rally shocks with a 5cm lift. Stuck track wideners on it too. Was amazing off-road. Word of warning though: buy with your heart and not with your head, or you'll spend every waking moment regretting it 🤣🤣🤣 Had to wave it goodbye when my wife decided to open the roof up like a tin of sardines on the ceiling of an underground car park. Broke my heart.
Hi Morgan, will it still be a money pit if the owner got it restored nicely? I'm thinking to get one but to be very honest my wallet doesn't agree with my heart unfortunately.
Utterly love this car. Fond memories of my late Dad's RR Classic in the late '80s. I learnt to drive in it and we got up to all sorts in the countryside. Good times! I have to get one.
Loved my old classic, had it for about 2 years, it cost me $7000 in repairs, but it was bloody brilliant and made you feel special every time you drove it. I miss it every day but as a young person not making big money i just couldn't afford to keep it going. One day i'll buy another. Oh and i just wanted to say, while parts and servicing we're expensive, and i put money into i didn't need too, the car never ever broke down once in 2 years of regular driving, until the gearbox let go on the motoway which was the end of it. Also 100% you are wrong about the turning circle, they have an amazing turning circle. Not sure about the air suspension models but the coil sprung ones can turn bloody tight and with adjustable steering stops fitted as started, with a slight suspension lift you can give yourself even more lock with standard tyres.
G'day Jay Emm. I bought one of these in 2014 which was a basket case! I'm an ex-Essex boy living in NZ and flew from one end of the country to the other to collect it and drive it back upto the North Island! Cut a long story short it started loosing oil at a rapid rate and I had to leave at Christchurch airport and flew home! Luckily the guy I bought from had connections in the car transporter biz and we split the cost to get back to where I lived. I had the intention of restoring it but one day I went to a nearby country park and reversed between two trees when another jumped out between them and smashed the rear bumper, tailgate and broke the rear hatch window! Consequently I put on a NZ auction site and sold it for what I paid for it to a Rangie enthusiast who had already had restored a Vogue SE in white and wanted one in black! Lucky me!
Love love these cars. Saw a old 2 door rooting away by a road I haven't been on in a while.. I want to get what I saw today!. These cars are so beautiful and classic.
I was initially given one of these while working for a humanitarian organization in a third world country. I very much liked it but only because I didn’t have to service it myself as it belonged to the company’s fleet. The hydraulics kept breaking down and after the third time I was given a Toyota Landcruiser 100 for security reasons. Not as appealing by any means but definitely much higher build quality and frankly just as good as far as the off-roading was concerned. Strangely enough, I still missed the Range Rover though... Nice video!

I owned exactly this age and model with the air suspension. The most comfortable go anywhere car I’ve owned. An armchair that could take you anywhere. Converted to LPG (with underslung tanks under the sills) it was ‘almost’ affordable to run! Any that are for sale now will have undoubtedly been restored and had the rust etc sorted so could actually make a good buy so long as you can afford the fuel (14mpg!) or convert to LPG as I did and I think the looks have aged well 👍
@@risengabaloyi8126 no cons at all in terms of runnning. The engine would start on petrol (it retained a small 6 gallon tank in the rear wing) and then as soon as you used the throttle it switched automatically over to LPG and just drove normally. There was a small electrical switch on the dash where you could switch back to petrol if needed, ie running out of lpg. That was the only drawback, the lack of lpg filling stations which you would have to seek out if on a long journey. The only thing I would say is to get the conversion done by an expert. There are plenty of ‘back street’ converters who will chuck a donut gas tank in the boot and won’t set the whole system up properly. Pay for it to be done correctly (the tanks underslung out of the way give you bigger capacity and range) and you’ll have no issues 👍

Hey Jay ! You keep on saying you’re Big, but how big are you ? I’m 1.85 m high and weigh 88 kg.....and fit nicely in my P38, haven’t been in the good ‘ol classic though, really that small ?
If you're over six foot tall, you have to adopt the Italian car driving posture. Slouched down in the seat. Legs spread. It's quite comfortable. FYI the 3.9 is adequate for the car. if you're heavy with your foot from standstill, it takes off like a scalded cat. This is a 40 year old design, or older. So comparing it with anything modern is apples and oranges.
Even the 3.5 is As quick as you need. But the 3.9 EFi Should be AWESOME QUICK. Give it a service. Any Faster & City NUMPTIES would Crash them. Crapping their pants at the Natural Bodyroll on bends..
I've had two e38 7-Series and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy! The running costs were astronomical, reliability was dodgy, at best, and they rusted just from thinking of rain. The 7-Series is what killed my enthusiasm for BMW entirely. I've since moved to Jaguar and couldn't be happier... yes, from German engineering to Jag, and it's worlds better. Let that sink in :-D

I spent my childhood climbing about inside one of these like it was someone's drawing room. What the hell kind of Godzilla are you that you find it cramped??? 😂😂😂
Great review, mate! Cheers
Wished I bought one ,, always admired and respected despite the odd horror story ,, cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
I owned a $4000.00 TD 5 Discovery, which sadly was written off recently.
It cost about $18000.00 in restoration in the seven years I owned it. Ridiculous I know but I miss it so much.
It has to be the epitome of a love hate scenario
Mk1 VW Golf GTi would be my suggestion. Iconic car that ignited the hot hatch frenzy❓Even if the Alfa-sud was the 1st.....discuss😁
Mike Shacklock or just watch the other thousand videos of them
9:20 I think that RR is haunted.
Really good review, never been in one so never realised just how cramped they could be for us 6 footers.
I own one...they are not cramped and I'm 1,92 tall!
@@mauricewanink1452 You make a valid point, Ed China from Wheeler Dealers drives one and he's 2 metres/6ft 7in tall and he's not cramped....what is JayEmm talking about?!
@@graemew7001 I don't know? The seat position is trucklike... Very different from a normal or sports car.
@@mauricewanink1452 Thats probably it then, Jay doesn't tend to test cars like the Range Rover very often so the position felt alien to him. I prefer to be sat up like that in a car....but that's probably an age thing, I struggle with the low down stuff now 😂
I drive a '92 Vogue LSE and I am 200 cm tall (6' 6"). Not very spacious, but I fit.
Good solid review. I have always thought when I first saw one in 1969 that it is the most beautiful car ever made! I still do! Would I buy one, nearly did but the mpg put me off!
Elegant, just beautiful! ooohhhh! I'm getting a warm feeling.....damm! It's incontinence!
Do they have the unreliable air suspension? Or the simple and reliable leaf springs?
I enjoyed this review. I’d also like to see you feature;
Mk1 Mini Cooper S
Mk1 Golf GTI
BMW E30 325i
Lotus sunbeam
Porsche 930 Turbo
Ferrari 308
R32 Skyline GTR
At least two of those are on the cards
Take the 20mm spacers out from under the seat mounts, feels lower of coarse then the sunvisors are next bu to useless for most of us
"it drives like a Defender" because the the RRC chassis, axles etc. were used for the Defender. It is identical except from some little details.
I drive a crusty '86 with 2.4 VM Diesel (now fitted with a '74 V8) and I love it!
And I have another two "under (re-)construction".
Hey Jay ! You keep on saying you’re Big, but how big are you ? I’m 1.85 m high and weigh 88 kg.....and fit nicely in my P38, haven’t been in the good ‘ol classic though, really that small ?
The legend car..
great video
I do like these classic,s, but i hate the soft dash and prefer the older hard dash cars.
Icon....how about e-type, Defender, Mini, the old Ford mini-vans, Jeep CJ, 1st gen water-cooled FWD VW
Nosferatu in the passenger seat?
very good
If you're over six foot tall, you have to adopt the Italian car driving posture.
Crapping their pants at the Natural Bodyroll on bends..
see comment above reference 1.5 inch spacers installed as standard
I've had two e38 7-Series and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy! The running costs were astronomical, reliability was dodgy, at best, and they rusted just from thinking of rain.
The 7-Series is what killed my enthusiasm for BMW entirely. I've since moved to Jaguar and couldn't be happier... yes, from German engineering to Jag, and it's worlds better. Let that sink in :-D
@ Maybe I had a pair of lemons, hard to say, but based on my personal account, I don't see any Bavarians returning to our garage :-D
Couldn't agree more, had an e34 525i awful thing! The Germans aren't very good at rust protection.
My E60 hasn't rusted.
Quick nip down to an isolated farm in Essex....
Thank you for the video. Regards from Costa Rica.
How much is coke selling for.??? 😀😀
@@stringer-ik1pc Coke selling of 600 ml is $2.
@@caballero9974 😀😀👍
@@stringer-ik1pc ;)
I fit in mine quite well, cut down on the pukka pies big lad
What main camera mount is that on the windscreen?
This channel and Harry's Garage are probably the only two car reviewers actually worth bothering with now. pls don't feel the need to take every car to the track.
Cheers!
Ive re watched this again today... its such a lovely old girl..
I have a very special rangerover classic recovery unit
Where filmed thanks
These old land rovers always remind me of the Essex boys murder, look it up.
I know it well, used to drive past Rettendon a lot
Jason Juggler I always think the same, always conjures up that image of F424NPE in that snowy lane in my mind 🤣
Yeah I think that infamous blue Range Rover was the same model as this one, same year as well
The first car I ever ran out of petrol in. 😊
He say he is big , but did not mention how tall is he. Do someone knows?
5'10" or about 180 cm
Renault 5 gt turbo, Renault clio vr6 both rare cars. My father has a Peugeot m16i brilliant motor how ever needs alot of tlc now due to ill health.
Car sos I would suggest
Ford fiesta rs from the 90s uber cool
How tall are you.
Well I would probably go with the landrover 80 inch.
Thanks Jay, would you be interested in covering the Jeep "Overland" Grand Cherokee 2.7TD with the Merc engine around 2004/5?
Yeah, you got one?
@@JayEmmOnCars I had 2 but I miss 'em like hell, I loved em.
I like your shows, you don't copper-coat things and ad-lib, you say it as it is, cheers.
