My oldest was playing the Whitehead port yesterday and LOVED the conveyor belt fight. Using Sonic's speed to melt down the device was incredibly fun! We both agree it's our second favorite boss fight in the game. Of course, nothing beats racing Metal.

Looking at Sonic CD as a product of its time, it really is unquestionably a great game. Even if you look past the cutting edge graphics there was a lot of style and creativity put into the game, which really stands out with the boss fights and level designs.
The boss fights are a huge step up from Sonic 1, and even Sonic 2 in many ways. There is always a gimmick when going against Robotnik and they all stand out as being unique in some way. Very different from the single-screen fights you usually got from Sonic 1 & 2. In many of these boss fights you have to battle with the surroundings, such as pinball mechanics, water, treadmills and the many obstacles along Stardust Speedway's race track.
The time travel aspect in particular opens the way for 4 different versions of each level, each with their own variation of the level's song. You get to see the consequences of your actions when visiting the future, and are even rewarded for making a Good Future when fighting Robotnik.
Classic Sonic has always been about replay value, and Sonic CD delivers by making itself a unique and diverse experience.

Sonic cd is one of the worst 2d sonic games. The boss fights, while creative, pose nearly no challenge outside of metal sonic's terrible rubber-banding and the race's terrible random spike placed layout and the god awful pinball boss.
The time travel is terribly executed given the game literally gives up at times and just lets you travel for free with two springs right next to each other when they couldve *easily* made you access a time period like sonic 2 lets you access it's special stages. Time traveling to the future was a waste of resources in the development room because it only serves as an annoying punishment. EVEN when you make a GOOD future in metallic madness, LITERALLY the only level design change in act 3 is taking out a single enemy. All the spikes are still there, guess I didnt even earn that much for all my hard work.
Sonic cd has replay value at the cost of having some of the worst level design ive seen in a 2d platformer. They stretched themselves way too thin with how many different level layouts they set out to do.

It's my personal favorite of the classic games. I didn't have it as a kid but I used to see an advert on TV for it quite a bit and it looked so vibrant, colourful, fast and fun. I had and still have a Sega Magazine with a several pages long coverage I would look at again and again. I eventually picked it up in I think 2002 when I started work and discovered eBay. It was actually worth the wait and I still love this game today!

wha a year 1993 was , an under rated good game released that sonic cd , but it also where inconsistencies started surfacing for sonic , allowing many different forms of media like sonic satam , sonic archie comic , sonic fleetway comic , adventure of sonic , which had barely any thing to do with what the games were trying to do and had a lot of things that felt out of place for sonic from charcterezation , story telling and art direction , fleetway comic which was a lot faithful to art direction of games but did not help that it has a weird lore of itself and sonic jerk personality and dark sense of humour , resulting in many different introductions of this franchise that is why many people to this day can't agree on what is sonic supposed to be , adventure of sonic and early archie sonic were most successful pther media back then resulting in many critics and casuals believing to this day that sonic is all about going fast , eating chilidogs , collecting rings and fighting robotnik and believing that this is a kid's franchise though it's not just for kids , if only sega of america had better communication with sega of japan and did not change so much of what sega of japan where introducing for sonic , all this inconsistency would not exist

Sonic CD might be the most divisive Sonic game of the Classic Era. It usually comes down to what you want in your Sonic experience. It you gotta go fast this might not be the game for you. If you don't mind a nonlinear playthrough you will probably like this a bit more. The game is slow at times, but it rewards you for your effort in a way no other Classic Sonic game has.

As a kid I heard a rumor that the SEGA CD had fewer sound channels in the US release so they had to make a new soundtrack for Sonic CD to work on American hardware? That's why the past themes were all in both versions, they utilized the channels of the Genesis/Mega Drive to make a more rudimentary sound in the Japanese version, but with the American tech limitations they wouldn't be able to feature the more advanced Present and Future tracks. I thought this was the legit explanation my entire childhood, but I can't find it substantiated anywhere. The SEGA CD's whole point was having CD Quality audio after all, and I don't think the consoles had any differences other than region coding and a different name printed on it.
It seems like the real reason for the different soundtracks was licensing and localization reasons. And to be fair if I were an American kiddo in the 90s and heard a clip of "Sonic Boom" on a commercial that would have made me pretty hype ngl.
I grew up with the Gems Collection port but I remember finding the Japanese soundtrack online and being mad I couldn't switch between them anywhere in the game.
I do like some of the American Bad Future tracks a little better though, there's something so visceral about the vocals and guitar in that version that really adds a level of despair and pain to those Bad Futures. Nowadays I listen to both on shuffle, which may be sacrilege to some but its all good and it all makes me think of this fantastic game.
Thanks for the video, Sonic CD is one of my favorite 2d platformers of all time and one of the strongest and most polished sonic titles imo, it really delivers on its entire premise and is firing on all cylinders. The cutscenes, the visual design, the music, the gameplay, it all feels inspired.

People used to claim it was this brilliant hidden gem before the grand majority had access to it, then the mobile ports came around and way more people could play it and see the faults in this really weird game. The US soundtrack is underrated and I think it does a better job capturing the moodier and more ominous atmosphere that the game is going for in some levels. The boss theme really hammers it all in. Sonic is desperately fighting to save Little Planet, and Dr. Robotnik's efforts to stop Sonic feel more like trolling because Robotnik ALREADY WON. SONIC LOST. The future belongs to Robotnik and he's created a timeline where the world is his and his alone to rule. I personally like both the Japanese and American soundtracks equally, but I really do think the US soundtrack's darker vibes arguably do a better job capturing the dire nature of the situation.

I played twice in the last 24 hours and enjoyed most of it. Sonic 2 is probably still my favourite, but I actually took the time to figure CD out this time. I tried it a few years ago and just found it confusing. Yesterday I completed it with Sonic but didn't get the good ending. Finished it today with Tails and got the good ending with the time stones. Might try it again with Sonic but get the good ending the hard way. It's actually pretty amazing how much replayabuloty the game has. The other classic Sonic games do too but for different reasons. I just love blasting through Sonic 2, getting Super before the end of Green Hill Zone.

Sonic CD is an odd one for me. Might be my least favorite of the classic games….but I still like it lol. It’s my least favorite story too(not a fan of time travel). The muffled sound affects like the jumping is weird along with the silent roll attack. The peel out is fine. I don’t miss it in other games but it’s ok here. Cool visual. I use it more than the spin dash because it’s faster but I usually roll(also I don’t like the sound of the spin dash in this game lol). The animated shorts are amazing tho! And the soundtrack is one of the best in the franchise. The JP version. The US is good, certainly has its own share of bangers, but it’s not the JP version. There’s some tracks I do prefer, really just the US Tidal Tempest and Sonic Boom. That’s it. Lets be honest, the US track is good, but not great. Not Sonic great. And the JP version I’m pretty sure is widely considered the official or main version as it’s used for Generations and Mania. And no matter the version, the JP past themes are on both which makes the US version a little jarring. Palmtree panic is a good zone. CD Zones(mostly) have a direct parallel to Sonic 1 zones. This one is basically Green Hill with triangles rather than squares. Those ramps are cool. Nice music. The boss is pathetic tho. Amy’s here and she’s cute tho she’s essentially pink Sonic in her classic design. I like her(make her playable again, Sega). Collision Chaos is kinda like Spring Yard with more springs and bumpers. Amy is here again along with Metal Sonic, Egg man’s best creation. The zone is fine if a little annoying but the music is great. The boss is annoying but not hard. Tidal Tempest is like Labyrinth but more speed is here so it’s better by default. It’s a good zone. The boss is another chase like in Labyrinth except this time there’s a fight in the end and I like it. Quartz Quadrant with it being in a cave and having outside portions, feels like this is the parallel to Marble. This is one one of my favorite zones. It’s especially fun to speed through. The boss is a neat concept but it’s weak. You just hold right, stop, jump, hold right. Wacky Workbench is an annoying stage with annoying hazards. Easily my least favorite of them all. This is also the one zone that’s entirely unique without a Sonic 1 counterpart. The past music is goofy but I love it lol. The boss is easy. Just hit Eggman and stand on either the left of right. You’ll never get hit. Stardust is great fun. Some don’t like it because there’s the flip signs that change where you go with no visual indication. The boosters that sends you flying all over. Some struggle with the speed tubes. I love this zone. The boss is a race against Metal which is great. There’s obviously some rubber banding but the race is so fun and no matter how you play, it’s exciting! You CAN absolutely dust Metal and prove show him he’ll never be Sonic. You can have the race be neck and neck and barely edge him out. Or if you’re behind, you can make a comeback. It’s fun. Oh and Amy is here. Eggman never use that insta death laser again for some reason. We know he has no issue retreading old mechs lol. Also this zone is like starlight. Metallic Madness is a better Scrap Brain in every way. It’s super maze like tho and there are gimmicks that are confusing like the slow pillars being able to launch you up high. Who would think they’d do that? The game punishes you with one wrong move you will be starting sections of those zone over. I’ve gotten timeouts here lol. The boss is pathetic but not as tedious as Sonic 1’s. Also you have rings here…and this is the final boss. The credits have good animations. I like both endings. Sonic flinging a rock at Robotnik is funny. The credit song I prefer cosmic eternity over Sonic Boom again. The special stages I hate. The ufos even in later ports are hard to hit. They can juke you, sometimes you go under them. They’re annoying to hit imo. It’s a little bearable since you can stay in the stage and you can restart them, but they’re annoying. Half pipe is better. These are still better than Sonic 1 tho. I prefer the generators method which is a hot take. I do for a few reasons. Firstly, I know where they are so I don’t struggle getting them. I will never recommend this way to new players. Some of these generators are annoying to fine and no way someone finds some of these on their own. I believe it is impossible. I know where they are so I find them. The other reason I go this method is because I love all the tracks so much and this way gets the most out of the tracks. Also get the most out of the level design. Overall, it’s a fine game and the soundtrack alone is enough to pick it up. The main reason to pick it up(hearing the music with the zones is better than just YouTubing the soundtrack imo). Not terrible, but one of the classic games has to be the worst and this is that one.

Yeah, I played Sonic CD for the first time yesterday in Origins, and got the good ending with both routes. I loved it. Is it a good Sonic game? Eh, if you come to this game expecting Sonic 2 or 3, you'll hate it, but if you meet the game on its own terms and go for the good ending, you'll find one of the most unique and engaging 2D platformers. Definitely more interesting than Sonic 1, lol.
