I live in a very conservative place and I present as masc white man. I find a lot of bros assume I'm on their "side" just because I like camping and shooting and such. But I find I can use that privilege to get them to listen to me about important things more than they'd listen to anyone else. It's unfortunate that certain people will only listen to masculine-presenting men about anything. But we can use it to the advantage of the people we care about. We can use our privilege for very important things.
I have a similar experience. Friends on the left and the right both assume I agree with them on everything major because the issues are so obvious that there's no way any reasonable person could disagree with them, and that provides a lot of opportunity to introduce nuance into black and white issues. Hardest part is holding your tongue until you find the question to ask that causes the most soul searching. "Why should the government get to violate bodily autonomy in cases of abortion when we agree it's wrong in every other case? Wasn't overriding our autonomy to save other lives their whole justification for vaccine mandates?" "What if transfemme athletes start to push AFAB women out of certain sports?" If you're lucky the group will be split over the answer and you won't have to support either side, just let them debate on their own. I kind of assume it's the same for other groups, I'm never going to convince a black woman of anything, but maybe somebody she views as more like her could?
I also live in a very conservative place Southern Georgia and it's sad that so many conservatives don't believe the second amendment should apply basically to any group they don't like. I don't know how many people I've met that thought I was on their side. Talking about if a trans person came into their store to buy a gun. They would only sell them a single bullet and when I didn't laugh they tried to explain the joke to me and I just told him it wasn't funny at all. There are too many conservatives that make fun of fuds for saying nobody needs an assault rifle, but they are the same way. They just don't believe gay people or black people or literally anyone who doesn't look or act just like them deserves to own a firearm
I live is a conservative -ish area with a lot of minorities that voted for Trump. None of them believe the racism, but I'm like, let me tell you as a white guy that people feel comfortable saying the most racist trash imaginable, that racism is alive and well and you should listen to a man when he says he hates you.
@LukeCrawford-n7n my argument for trans women in sports is that sports aren't important so who cares. The fact that sports are so important to so many is a sign that we truly have nothing important to do.

Unfortunately it seems like all sides of the political and social spectrum these days have forgotten how to communicate respectfully or to have a legitimate debate without it devolving into personal attacks, name calling and screaming.

I think you touched on something important here, that I feel like too many people see as the same thing, and that's the difference between proactive and provocative. I see a sentiment in some communities that doing anything less than as loudly as possible is the same thing as doing nothing, and I feel like that can discourage people who can't or don't want to go "all out" from participating at all. Yes, there's absolutely a time for flying the banners high and shouting it from the rooftops, but just as important--and far more often overlooked or discounted, I think--is the quiet support, the personal allyship, and the small acts of kindness. You don't have to save the whole world at once. Helping one person in one small way still makes the world a better place.
The resistance only makes noise when it is advantageous to do so. And it usually has supporters that for very good reasons cannot show open alliance. This has always been the way of things.
Agreed entirely here--a right denied to anyone is a loss to all rights for everyone, and as Martin Niemöller taught us all, we who can speak out from our positions of relative safety had better do so before there's no one left to speak for us.
Hey im trans and from Germany. I have long struggled with my interest and love for Guns, as Gun culture in many places seems so right wing and non inclusive. Your speaking out and inviting tacticoolgf really helped me accepting myself more fully. I have no idea what made you so compassionate to our issues and struggles, but i honestly love you for it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for giving me a space where i can be a gun nerd and a trans girl at the same time without feeling out of place
I am proud to be apart of this community. Being a voice for change and calling out bigotry is something those of us with the privilege to do so should be doing and encouraging. If any part of the message of this video offends you in anyway, that should be a clue to do some internal reflecting.
This is the take that soooo many so-called libertarians miss. A truly free society can construct support and allegiance to an ideal without trampling individualism nor demanding obedience. A humane ethic is critical, do no harm, accept no evil, all will be well.
I'll never forget reading about GCA, and how it specifically targeted 'cheap' handguns (being imported)...cuz gov knew they were being sold to the lower-middle/impoverished classes (new, via pawn shops etc). $30-50 in 50-70s 4 handgun = affordable-ish. So basically gov didn't want blacks and other minorities to have easy access to firearms (in 1960s, NOT 1860s).
Raven Arm's n Co STEPPED UP and made their Zamek line of cheap domestic handguns to make up for Rohm/Rossi/etc that couldn't get imported...GOV took great exception to this; and basically drove them out of business any way they could. (All the way into the 90s). 2000s: Hi-Point makes 'not great' but functional handguns in zamek slide (a la Raven n Co) but w/ modern polymer frame; Keeping the spirit of "Firearms for everybody = better place than nobody w/ them"
I've never really cared about how others live their lives as long as nobody involved is getting harmed. This covers a number of issues including religion, sexual orientation and gender ect. People should be able to feel safe.
This whole video reminded me of my aunt. I was kicked out for being trans in April and a few weeks later my aunt contacted me. We had a chat, she was very supportive of me and understanding of the circumstances. She said if I needed any help, call her first. Well, a couple months later, August if memory serves, I got an eviction notice. Our landlord jacked up the price by 40% and I wasn't gonna make that by my income, so I needed to move out. I called up my aunt and asked her if I could stay over at hers for a week or two, to figure out where I can afford to live in. Her response was "hey umm, it's best that you go on and apologize to your parents, and boymode until you're out of their house". Retrospectively, maybe this is the only option she saw viable for me and didn't trust me with my ability to pull together. I can understand that now. But at the time, telling me to go back into the closet and beg my way back for accommodation felt like betrayal from her end. So I just said okay, hung up and went it my way. Nowadays I'm in a housing with my name on the lease and enough income to do pretty much whatever I fancy as a student. I'm still a bit bitter at what my aunt did, but I cannot entirely blame her for being overwhelmed at the situation - it was my first steps into independence, albeit forced by my parents for completely the wrong reasons.
Fair and reasonable - it ultimately comes down to Kenny Rogers - you've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to run. There are some fights you simply cannot win so in those situations, there's no point in martyring yourself if doing so will make no difference, instead, save your literal or metaphorical heroic last stand for when it will matter.
Treat people with respect. It's not complicated. You don't have to support a person's decisions to treat them politely. If you do want to promote certain ideas, that's up to you. Being vocal about controversial topics draws attention and certain risks, but may benefit others or help spread your beliefs. Try to be polite, either way you decide.
Has the respect brought you peace? Have you found the place you belonged all along? And can you respect those that only respect you now that you fit their ideal of respectable? I am 63 and my default is beareded long hair, and I do ride. I have changed my appearance several times, specifically to be accepted in certain circles. I found that once some people got to know me, my appearance and passion for motorcycles didn't seem to detract from our friendship or association, as the case may be. I've almost always returned to form right before their eyes. For others it was all about their pre-judgement and prejudices based on appearance and stereotypes. I would like to think that any respect the former have for me is based on my abilities and character. And I couldn't care less about the latter. What's your experience?
Theres a line between self preservation and cowardice. By shouldering some discomfort, an Ally allows someone else to live in less genuine danger. I see no reason to be silent.
Knowing about societal issues and the struggles of others will always be an important venture for anyone in any walk of life, especially if it's an issue or struggle that doesn't directly affect you. Having the voice that you have to appeal to the common empathy among humans instead of giving in to hatred borne of fearmongering and to maintain a stance of equality and support for all is why this is the one gun channel I will always follow. I hope one day I can have as much positive impact as you do. Happy Holidays and obligatory KARL BAD MAN!

Thank you, I can tell this was thoughtfully considered and I appreciate your take on this. Some of us don't have the luxury to "grey man" based on appearance or other characteristics, so sometimes it can feel unfair for those with the most privilege, to also choose and hide any allyship when it's convenient for them.
This is a big fat "it depends" given the nature of the crisis and factions involved, let alone if drawing attention to yourself will even be effective, nevermind worth your personal risk. Will it even make a long lasting impact if you do x here and now?

As a trans woman who’s into guns and has always struggled with how much it’s clear this space isn’t a fan of us I really appreciate your openness to stand up for me so much Karl. You’re a real one.
What an interesting question, I had to listen like 3 times in a row to get it but once I did i thought it was really interesting. I like the answer too. Self preservation needs to come first or your no help to anyone. We do what we can, when we can. Sometimes I suppose a situation can arise where we feel we gotta throw down, because we think its right thing to do and we hope that right then the cards we are dealt work out for us.
I’m a trans woman, my options are to hide, detransition, boyMode, or live openly. I have to work so I can’t hide, I’ll walk backwards into folkvangr or Valhalla flying double birds before I detransition, and I can’t do a very convincing boyMode anymore. So 🤷🏻♀️
Not to mansplain, but I would respond by emphasising that survival includes maintaining your mental health, and weighing physical risk against psychological risk is of course 100% valid.

This is definitely an interesting and thought-provoking question. I have often wondered the same thing, and have mostly decided that (for me) keeping to myself and drawing less attention is best. But, that's just because realistically I don't like the attention, discussions, etc. when out and about. I just want to be left alone, and would rather not make a statement while doing so. However, I applaud those who do make the effort to make a clear and obvious statement in their everyday actions, and may occasionally venture into that realm, but rarely. I do recognize that in making my choice, I'm actively doing nothing whatsoever to increase support for a fairly major issue, but I am more worried about inadvertently making us all look bad somehow.

I feel like this came at a good time as people might have to spend Christmas with others they disagree with. Today I'm going to a family gathering and I truly dread it but I can't make my situation worse by not interacting with people. Thankfully(Regretfully?) there's nothing externally different about me (yet) but I hate being around people that I feel go out of their way to be ignorant and disrespectful of people different from themselves. After recent events I have even stronger opinions about those around me and it's exhausting to try to get along with people so radicalized, especially family. It feels like that disgusting bit in The Walking Dead where the characters smear zombie guts on themselves to walk through the horde. As always thanks for your opinion Karl. And to anyone else out there let's just do our best.
This is a wonderful take on this issue that I think more people need to hear. I feel like it’s really hard to tell someone that being an ally is a huge ask. That really all you can hope for is people to be willing to live and let live. But in today’s political climate that ideology is treated like it’s not good enough. Ive had conversations about this to open allies. I had to be honest with them and say that while I never wish any ill will upon anyone in their community. I’ll never prioritize their struggles above my own. That answer never gets a positive response and it sucks because I’m not looking to cause anyone harm. I just don’t have a dog in that race and that shouldn’t be a bad thing. Me not being your ally doesn’t make me your enemy.
I'm a mixed-race trans woman who used to present as a mostly-white guy. The difference between how people listen to me now as opposed to when I looked more like them is honestly a little appalling. The reason why I say that is because I can advocate for my own rights as much as I want but the fact is that the 'moderates' who might change their minds are far more receptive to cis-het, white people saying it than us. Our Allies speaking up for us are super important for chasing away bigotry. I can't speak for everyone but I think your take is spot on and highly appreciated. Thanks Karl.
I think people are most likely to have their mind changed by somebody like them. White-cis-het-neurotypical is the majority/average so the more of those boxes somebody seems to tick the easier they find it to convince others in that group. I don't think a cis-black-lesbian would ever have their mind changed by me, but they might have their mind changed by somebody they saw as more like themself.
Going from the city to the midwest I was stuck by how much was different in terms of lifestyle, transportation and communication. However the most surprising thing was that I didnt notice people were any different. Everyone forgets that the opinions, wants, and views are tied to environment and that until you see how another lives, you can't be an ally. No experiences means you cant even begin to acknowledge your own privileges. Shout out to one of the best gun channels out there. We all need you here. ✊
I have been far too vocal for far too long about far too many issues to hope for any kind of anonymity without completely nuking my online and in-person presences. I am not sure it would even be possible to do completely. And I am...mostly comfortable with that. If people have a problem with that to a degree that they feel the need to confront me aggressively, they are welcome to file with my complaint department.
It's also super important not just to know when to be provocative, but _how_ to be provocative. Too often I see people online and IRL say or do things so inflammatory that it ends up drawing more negative attention towards the ones they're trying to protect. I know it can feel really good to tell off a bigot, but remember that it's not about your own personal satisfaction. It's about making someone's life easier. Don't give them more rocks to carry.

Take charge of your communities. Think globally, act locally. Seek alliances within your communities. Neighbors, friends and family is all that matters. The village is all that matters. Love, acceptance, understanding and compassion. All within the embrace of your community. Don’t forget, if you don’t commit sin over chrissie, Jesus will have died in vain. Cheers.

@ I’m not talking about standard policy though, I’m referring to the hundreds of times (and growing) I’ve heard slurs spouted from people as soon as they think they have a “safe space” talking to “a fellow white man” in the south
the concept of the grey man is to not be noticed. Started with the prepper crowd, the idea that you don't advertise the fact that you're armed and well stocked. Don't wear tactical clothing, ect. Just be a dude that people forget. Its evolved to describe it as a tactical concept of not standing out in a crowd or society. This is not significantly different from how the LGBT community has been protecting itself from discrimination for centuries.
If youtube is demonitazing channels, don´t pay to remove adds. If you pay to be add free, you indirectly are supporting YT antigun policies because they can live wiothout external add support
Fair points, but I see many people use it as a bludgeon. "You guys aren't speaking up about the same things I'm speaking up about, you guys aren't agreeing with me, you guys aren't disrupting your own lives to align with my values, you're wrong, you should be in jail." Very similar to the "Why Mommy Carries a Gun" mentality. I just want to live my life the way I want to live it, and I want everyone else to be able to do the same. I guess it's human nature to use whatever we can as a tool of warfare, even under the guise of being good.
This is an amazing reply. I've already had a deep respect for Karl and his stance on the social issues and subjugation/marginalization faced by so many people in this country (and abroad) for years, but this statement really drives it home. I am a member of a marginalized community, and while I may often appear "stealth" in public, I spend much time with many others who do not. I have been witness to and also the target of multiple hate attacks, and the threat of an escalation of violence in those confrontations is very, very real. "Simply existing" is often enough to put a target on someone's back, especially when politicians and self-important TH-cam demagogues use their position to endorse and encourage violence. Nobody should be asked to put themselves at further risk when they're already fighting for survival, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I feel like negatively talking down to those sorts of people is a bad idea in the sense that keeping the cycle of negativity going is awful. Even if they treat you that way, it's not good to treat them the same way, figure spreading kindness is better than aggravating people, I suppose.

You should learn to be normal and get of the internet
Karl, your thoughts are full of common sense and that is sorely missing these days. When I can next afford to, I will check out your patreon.
I spent years having long hair and being a biker. I got a haircut and bought some Harvard t-shirts on Amazon. Now I finally get respect.
Hah yup got called a libitard at a gun store for wearing a beanie and long hair. Get a haircut and I'm fine now xD

What an interesting question, I had to listen like 3 times in a row to get it but once I did i thought it was really interesting. I like the answer too. Self preservation needs to come first or your no help to anyone. We do what we can, when we can.

Love the shout-out to Margaret Killjoy. She rules.
Going from the city to the midwest I was stuck by how much was different in terms of lifestyle, transportation and communication. However the most surprising thing was that I didnt notice people were any different. No experiences means you cant even begin to acknowledge your own privileges. Shout out to one of the best gun channels out there. We all need you here. ✊
Great video but I have to ask, what’s the make and model of your hat?
I have been far too vocal for far too long about far too many issues to hope for any kind of anonymity without completely nuking my online and in-person presences. I am not sure it would even be possible to do completely. And I am...mostly comfortable with that. If people have a problem with that to a degree that they feel the need to confront me aggressively, they are welcome to file with my complaint department.
thank you. in short, read the situation and play to your strengths. opportunity may arise
Don't give them more rocks to carry.

the concept of the grey man is to not be noticed.
