    Thank you man from Queensland Australia our climates are similar. Im using pidgeon pea and needed this video to keep adding onto 1. I’m winging it watching what weeds grow and how each common weed changes the soil. After 2 years on our block I just toss what removes health and keep what adds health. I’m still learning their names so this video has been really helpful . Thank you for taking the time to make it. 🙏🇦🇺

    I use crotalaria to fix nitrogen in Puerto Rico. It’s related to pigeon pea. It grows really fast and can fix a good amount of nitrogen in just two months. Why stop at two months? Because it has a stem like hemp and at two months it’s easier to cut. Another way to use longer is to leave it until it flowers then you run it over flat on the ground with a stick or a roller then cover it with a plastic ground cover for a month. The reason it is my favorite is because it has a nematocide in its roots that kills vegetarian nematodes and leaves carnivorous nematodes that eat protozoa, fungi, and bacteria that eat rocks. This process makes minerals available for plants.

      Thanks for sharing. That grows here too. I’ll have to try encouraging it a bit more.

    Great video! A couple that I like that weren’t on the list are the Coral tree which has beautiful flowers and the Wiliwili which needs drier conditions but is such a unique looking plant. We’ve been trying unsuccessfully so far to get some more native NF’s to grow like Uhiuhi and Mamane. Both should be well suited to our area so we may keep trying. Maybe we just need the right bacteria in the soil. A hui hou! 🤙

      I didn’t know wiliwili was a nitrogen fixer, that’s pretty cool. I know mamane thrives in dry higher elevation areas, good luck with them!

    Great topic for anywhere. We don't hear much about Pigeon pea in the states. The variety I have are 120 day and can grow as far North as Ohio. Where you are, it will live 3-5 years. Animals tend not to eat it in it's natural stand because it tends to be too bitter but when the branches are cut, the bitterness I'd gone in a couple hours. Milk goats and cows love it.

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Impressive! I didn’t know it could do so well so far north. Thanks for the tips.

      @@HomesteadinHawaii Typically, it's true that the older varieties will not grow that far North because they are 270-290 to mature peas. The variety I have here were developed(non GMO) by a friend of mine at the University of GA are a 120 day crop. The 120 days allows it to grow further North. All about the time between frosts. I cut mine just before flowering at 50 days for hay then let it come back to mature. The yeilds are insane on the peas. Cheers

    Do you know if the perrenial peanut will grow through the county mulch here? I have done like you said and built up my gardens with dirt and mulch to grow on the lava. I have the perrenial peanut growing as well. Every month I get more mulch and spread it around but I do not cover the peanut. The areas where the peanut is now is about a foot lower than the rest of the beds. I want to bring those areas up. but I don't want to lose my nitrogen fixers.

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Give it time and the perennial peanut will take over. Mine always comes back when I spread mulch

    Awesome video! Thanks for sharing this info man :) Here on the Caribbean island of Curacao we also have lots of tamarind, mata raton (gliricidia sepium), prosopis juliflora (we call it Pal'i Indju) and leucaena amongst nitrogen fixing trees. Shrubs like pigeon pea also grow but due to the arid-dry climate we have to water them at least once or twice a week. Also recently many farmers have been using mombasa grass as ground cover - mulch and food for animals. I wonder if perennial peanut would be a better alternative as it requires less chop and drop and covers the ground evenly.. any tips where I can order perennial peanut?

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not know how to order perennial peanut. It is mostly grown from cutting, in fact I’ve never seen mine go to seed, but I will let you know if I do find any. Thanks for sharing how you use nitrogen fixers in the Caribbean. We are all so similar.

    Hi Scott
    Thanks for the agroforestry tips!
    I am wondering if you have any leads on shipping containers and a way to haul to Ocean View?
    water tight and fairly good shape paint not important if water tight.
    Mahalo and keep it up buddy!

      There’s a place in shipman industrial in keaau that can help you. I forget their name though, just drive around in there and look for a lot with a bunch of shipping containers

      @@HomesteadinHawaii Thanks Sean. A guy out of Kona said $8300 for a 20’ and $10k+ for a 40’. That seem pretty high to you?
