I was 21 and had just had my son, I was a very lonely depressed stay at home young inexperienced mother and I remember I would have my local Pbs Channel on all the time just to have something on in the background. I don't cook but I found something soothing and comforting having this show on with me and my new born. So underrated and often overlooked the gems and treasures of public broadcasting shows and what they offer.
I remember watching Martin Yan on PBS when I was a young girl. I also remember having a crush on him and I still crush on him now! Great sense of humor, educated, beautiful smile, and a fantastic cook! I still watch his cooking tutorials and have recreated some of his great recipes. 😊
Martin Yan is worth a huge reputation as a Chinese chef in the world. He demonstrates knife skills on the screen beautifully, which is always eye-catching.
My favorite from a much later episode is when he had an audience member helping and she kept paying more attention to him than the pan. 'It's called "stir fry", not "sit there fry"!'
I loved Yan! I watched him in the 90s too in England, when I was in my early 70s..... I guess I'm not long for this Earth now, but I'll always be happy to remember him chopping up things whilst saying "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven..." or "If Yan can cook - so can you!"
I got to see Martin Yan in person some years back. He is just as fast, cooking skills and well as verbal. It was great to watch him in action. And we got to taste his creation!!
My dad used to watch Yan Can cook all the time when I was in my late teens. Always raved about how funny he was. Often we would watch together and just be in fits of laughter. My dad passed away 20 years ago. When I recently found out Yan was still going I was like "wow, I wish I could tell dad" Good to see Yan still going. It makes me remember better times.

I miss this show so much! Mr. Yan was so full of fun energy and was genuinely funny. Plus all the history of food he shared was very interesting to me as a kid who loved cooking. Martin Yen, Julia Child, and Alton Brown are the reasons I fell in love with the joy of cooking. They all were entertaining, fun and knew the history of the food they were making.

Did anyone see the episodes with the lady that was helping him? He would tease her and she was shy, but she started to make comments putting Martin in his place - his reactions were wonderful. My childhood was better with Martin Yan

I discovered Yan Can cook on Christmas Eve back when I was in high school. I was up late and flipping through the channels and I believe he was on PBS. Randomly popped in to my head the other day. What a nice treat to find episodes on YT!

I used to watch this man when I would stay home from school sick. He was always one of my favorites. I grew up with PBS and my daughter has too. I don't really appreciate what they've turned into. But I highly recommend, if you are going to allow your young children to spend time in front of the TV, to put on shows like this. It's because of shows like this that I love to cook and learn.

Martin Yan was my inspiration to start cooking. I got really got into cooking Asian food because of him. I work in restaurants and have been for 25 years. The only thing that keeps me going in kitchens is... IF YAN CAN CCOK SO CAN YOU!!!!
