Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

The opening dissonance is intended to produce the adverse emotional reaction. You as the listener are not supposed to like it. Your job is to not like it and be disturbed by it. You are then properly prepped for the beauty and serenity to follow. Without the ugly, there is no beauty.

I thought it was the chaos of nature juxtaposed to the chaos of human emotions. The whole piece is, after all, based on the novel Siddhartha, whose them is finding enlightenment, centered on a river ("the edge").

For 50 years I have taken this ride and it never gets old. In the intro we enter a world with fresh eyes and senses and then the chaotic part starts. To me that represents the noises and distractions of everyday life, maybe starting with going to school. But we never really getting anywhere. Do not ask profound questions or seek answers. When Jon's AHHH comes in then you think but maybe there is more and questions start. From that the journey of self-discovery takes over and builds to the climax with the organ solos. After that it is journey home to end up where you started in the first place, that magical place. This is great music and has stood on the peak of prog rock for 50 years. And that 18 mins 42 secs is so very short.

You can get over the intro once you realize how coordinated and well arranged it was and it's not chaos at all. It's actually pretty strategic and on further listens youll see past the abstraction. Its not as discordant as it first seems. In fact the first vocal AHHHHH in the middle of the intro is signaling that they know exactly what they are doing and it's not just discordant for discordant 's sake.

Beautiful esoteric song about chaos into order through to enlightenment. Very hermetically written song. Lots of references to very, very old texts and knowledge that a lot of people don't know about. The song is actually a spiritual experience. I hope everyone eventually gets to hear this and understand it because it is a genuine piece of divinely given art. There is far, far more to this song in every line and even if you don't understand the meaning it still finds a way to evoke the feelings you would get if you had understood them. The song is literally magic.

I listened to closed to the edge the first time when I was 12 years old in 1972, this song the more you hear and experience it the more it changes… after 50 years of listening I believe the first few seconds of calmness before the chaos represents time before existence and the chaos is the Big Bang of the universe or it could be the chaos of your own birth… the journey of life begins whether is personal or Mother Earth, I get up I get down signifies passage of time, and the the last movement is finding the divine and answers to your life or earth life …just at the moment of death or the end and all is calmed again.

The discordant opening was done for a single purpose: to set up the listener up for the *_release_* of built up tension that follows with a section of comforting, comparatively quiet _melody._ It's beautiful. Upon repeated listenings, you notice that even the chaos has structure. Since the first time l listened to CTTE, I saw it as "the weak spot" in the composition, but once it's out of the way everything that follows is complexity arranged into something beautiful and extremely ambitious. Repeated listenings are a must.
I used to wonder why classical orchestra fans will listen to a composition again and again, but with YES' masterpieces, I get it. For decades, every time I listened to Close To The Edge, I'd hear something I hadn't noticed before, how each of the musicians had added an element that helped to glorify the final product. It always gave me a renewed appreciation for how the members of YES were able to pack so much complexity into these creations without it all sounding like a muddle. Just amazing. All because they were 100% dedicated to _perfecting the mix_ at the sound board with Eddy Offord. Complexity in Prog music never sounded so good...

"Since the first time l listened to CTTE, I saw it as 'the weak spot' in the composition...."
I always used to think of it as something I had to endure until I got to the good part, but now I absolutely love it. The clash and interplay of the individual instruments is fun to listen to. I think of my development in that respect as being similar to that of a child who hates a particular food, but grows to love it as his taste buds mature.

I really like Dave's interpretation. For fifty years, this has been one of the absolute masterpieces of progressive rock. I have known this piece for half a century and am embarrassed to admit that today was the first time I ever read the lyrics. I love the part where Rick Wakeman takes you to church, then takes you to space, then brings you back to earth with the Hammond solo. A suggestion for interesting and insightful lyrics: Neil Young. He is one of the finest songwriters of the 20th century and his use of words is amazing.

Longtime Yes fan here. Always love seeing people's first-time reactions to the music that's been the soundtrack of my life. I've always admired Jon Anderson's creative turns of phrase; his lyrics exude spirituality but are vague enough to let you impart your own meaning. I often find that what may not make sense in the moment later takes shape in the overall context of the song. The funny thing is, even Anderson has said the meaning of his lyrics often don't reveal themselves until years after the fact.
I love that you picked up on the feeling that "death isn't scary at all." Anderson had this to say about his lyrics on this song: "The lyrical content became a kind of dream sequence in a way. The end verse is a dream that I had a long time ago about passing on from this world to another world, yet feeling so fantastic about it that death never frightened me ever since."
Fair warning: If you don't like discordance, you'd hate "The Gates of Delirium"! But I think you might enjoy "Heart of the Sunrise" or "The Revealing Science of God."

Guys You Two made me cry, even when the Perfection of CTTE was over. This "Masterpiece" is certainly cathartic, and elevating. I first heard this in '74 when I was 12, and I knew then
that I would never hear anything quite at this level, ever again. The ending of "Gates Of Delirium" may be tough for Dave, but we will get through it. and "Soon" will soothe everything.

The first time to hear close to the edge you experience it. You then go back time after time to listen to it. I was in h.s. when this first came out and to this day, once you're drawn into the music, it amazes me how fast the 20 minutes goes. And each time that ending, oh that ending! For me, the greatest ending ever written for a 'rock' song. The last line expresses the human experience in a nutshell... 'seasons will pass you by, I get up, I get down'... Now 65, that line pretty much sums up the last 50 years since I first heard it. My dad passed a year ago and his death has driven home in a big way ... Where did the time go? Then I think of that line that ends close to the edge.

    Three things on the opening:
    1. Notice how the natural sound of the birds chirping becomes mechanical just before the chaos begins.
    2. The "chaotic" section is less chaotic than it seems. It is polyrhythms -- if you can separate out the two separate rhythms they make more sense.
    3. Techniques like dissonance and polyrhythms are meant to make the listener uncomfortable. Without that initial discomfort the sublime themes at the end would not have quite the same feeling of "release".

  • @HollowGolem

The chaotic bit at the start is a bit rough, but I think it's that way because when they reprise it after that solo, in that new context, it doesn't sound as chaotic. Like the point is to show you that what seems nonsensical and meaningless can fit into a greater whole, and can be melodic once you have been prepared.

I heard this song when it first came out, so here's my take on the lyrical/musical message of the song:
Anderson said the lyrics were inspired by Hermann Hesse's 1922 novel "Siddhartha", which charts a journey of self-discovery, so... It opens with the peaceful sounds of nature, followed by the chaos of individual life in human society (hence the "discordance" you mentioned), the search for spiritual enlightenment, the notion that it cannot be found in human society ("Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space, He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race, I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place"), and ending with the sounds of nature one again (the Buddhist idea of enlightenment as being one with nature). The end of the journey was thus there at the beginning, all along.
50 years after the novel, and now 50 years ago, but still timeless.

That wasn't Max Hutchins, was it? Always wondered what happened to him. Anyway...how cool that you mention the cave drip sound. I thought I was the only one who processed it as such. It really is atmospheric. And this really is one of the greatest songs, classical or otherwise, in the history of the western canon, and maybe musket too. The crescendo never fails to give me horripilations of exuberance. The beginning chaos, once learned, is no longer chaotic, but merely complex. There is a learning curve that is rewarded with repetition. I am never not moved when hearing this.
Awaken and Gates of Delirium seem next. Great show. New subscriber.

HEY DAVE! TRY the intro again! LIKE the COSMOS , what seems like chaos at first impression is actually a very well organized series of elements synchronized . IT'S UP TO YOU to LISTEN again & adjust your mind to hearing it. It's like a puzzle of various pieces, all which lock together once you realize how they all connect. This is why, the voices suddenly enter in order to show that the intro isn't just random and that they know exactly what they are doing! THIS DEMONSTRATES - JUST HOW GREAT & AMAZING YES WERE! Their ability & agility to interweave sound patterns, textures & rhythms often created a mesmerizing sonic vortex which was one of their greatest techniques as a group! This signature style is even used throughout each segment of the song in various ways. Even the beginning of the ambient quiet segment is a ballet of choreographed swirling subtle arrangement of atmospheric instrumentation. I like that you interpreted that part to be about Mother Earth! THIS IS WHY Fans can listen to CTTE again and again for 50 years and still amazed and surprised. BTW many overlook BILL BRUFORD'S drumming throughout this album. He is CLEVERLY & SKILLFULLY just as engaged tonally, melodically & rhythmically as ANY of the other members. CTTE was a Prog GAME CHANGER for everyone in 1972! Every single time my eyes tear up by the end!

Dave, what might help you "get" the first section is watching a 90s era live version or the 2001 Symphonic concert version. It's played with a more solid beat and that kind of helps bring it together. I did not like that section for many years all that much, and that is what helped me. Now I absolutely love it as I understand what it is meant for and how it is actually very organized.

    *CLOSE TO THE EDGE* [LYRICS]
A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace,
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace,
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar,
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour
And assessing points to nowhere, leading every single one
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun,
And take away the plain in which we move,
And choose the course you're running
Down at the edge, round by the corner,
Not right away, not right away
Close to the edge, down by a river,
Not right away, not right away
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer,
Reaching out to call the colour of the sky
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see
Getting over all the time I had to worry,
Leaving all the changes far from far behind
We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name
Down at the end, round by the corner
Close to the edge, just by the river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
Now that it's all over and done,
Now that you find... Now that you're whole
My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand...
Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see,
As armoured movers took approach to overlook the sea
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be
Down at the edge, close by a river
Close to the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by the corner
Down at the edge, round by the river
Sudden call shouldn't take away the startled memory
All in all, the journey takes you all the way
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention,
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void...
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain:
Down at the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by a river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
In her white lace, you could clearly see the lady sadly looking
Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain
    I get up,
    I get down,
    I get up,
    I get down
    Two million people barely satisfy
Two hundred women watch one woman cry, too late
The eyes of honesty can achieve
How many millions do we deceive each day?
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
In charge of who is there in charge of me
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way?
The truth is written all along the page
How old will I be before I come of age for you?
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
The time between the notes relates the color to the scenes
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, so it seems
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love
As song and chance develop time, lost social temperance rules above
    Ah, ah
Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space,
He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race
I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place
On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley,
Called to witness cycles only of the past
And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark
Close to the edge, down by the river
Down at the end, round by the corner
    Seasons will pass you by,
Now that it's all over and done,
Called to the seed, right to the sun
Now that you find, now that you're whole
    Seasons will pass you by,
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down

Can't blame someone for not liking this - it's work. But this is the one piece of music I would listen to if I could listen to no other. I get lost in this piece both lyrically and musically. I love the avuncular opening. It is like a portal into the music, mirroring the chaos found in nature that inevitably achieves balance and harmony. One of my three favorite bands, but my favorite composition. It's just exalting...
Gonna recommend "Natural Science" by Rush. A little shorter. But a great ride...

Progressive truly is the new classical, right? What a journey of a song. I find a different interpretation every decade.
But I replied to give a recommendation! Dave's story of talking with a stranger during the eclipse made me think of Rush's 'Hand over Fist' from the Presto album. I think he'd grok that.

Lyrically, “I get up/get down” is the key to unlocking the song.
In the beginning, the narrator find the ups and down of existence as something negative, irritating and confusing. Why can’t life be all good?
After the meditation he reaches an enlightenment and realizes that the ups and downs a both essential to the journey of life and both should be embraced as positive.
So pre-enlightenment “I get up i get down is a lament, a complain, but at the end, this phrase is sung like a celebration.

I see Jon's lyrics on CTTE as a meditation on the Journey of Life as he's experienced it, with a constant awareness of God as a source of revealed Truth to him personally. Though he's described it differently, I think the "seasoned witch" he refers to is marijuana which opened his mind up to a more optimistic view of his journey that displaced a period of depression he had endured for a while, helping him to *understand* what had only been confusion to him previously. That's my claim & I'm sticking to it! 🙂

It is not disco-ordinance, you just have not learned to listen to it yet. It takes practice, for some 5 times is enough, other need 50 times. The intro in this song is FAR from disco-ordinance once you get it.

I like some Yes, but have to admit this is not one of their songs that I like. If I heard it before, I don't remember, and probably won't remember this time. I actually thought it was going to be a different song. Looking forward to some better songs for Dave to react to. I am glad you both enjoyed it though.
I thought Jon Anderson became a Christian later in life, as evidenced by this song he did with Christian Adult Contemporary band 4Him for the 2000 "The Best Of The 2000 Dove Awards". th-cam.com/video/xry2mUM0e4c/w-d-xo.html
I have an opposite path of Dave; grew up listening to nothing but secular rock music and later became a Christian and listen primarily to Christian music of many genres. I often wonder why he never found the "good" Christian music, as I have tons of it. Must have only listened to the mainstream stuff.

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh, he found it later in life, when his mom was no longer in control of every aspect of his learning. But as much as I love Newsboys and think DC Talk's Jesus Freak and Audio Adrenaline's Bloom are some of the best-sounding, most-inspired Christian albums ever recorded, I have never heard a so-called Christian artist produce the chills I get from Beethoven, Genesis, Yes, Rush, and others. You ever hear of Grammatrain? - JD

    • @TimWright623
      @TimWright623 ปีที่แล้ว

@@LiteralistReactions DcTalk and Newsboys are pretty good, but they are the tip of the iceberg for me. I have hundreds, if not thousands of great Christian music CDs and DLs, and yes, I have some Grammatrain. I have genres from pop to rap to metal to synth-pop to industrial to hardcore to punk and of course, some adult contemporary. As far as the "feels", I feel plenty of that in a lot of that music but mostly the lyrics. Rich Mullin lyrics are as deep as you can get. But of course, that is just my opinion, and that is the great thing about music and art. We are all right! Did you that Michael Tate of DcT is now the lead singer of Audio Adrenaline?

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Newsboys seemed to have run their course. Tate, the album, was good, too. Michael once hid behind me, I mean RIGHT behind me, hands on my shoulders, in a crowded hall to walk through unnoticed. Worked for like 30 seconds then we had to run for our lives. - JD

    • @TimWright623
      @TimWright623 ปีที่แล้ว

@@LiteralistReactions Has to be more back story on that one! But that's ok, no need for more info. I don't know what I was thinking, Tate is the lead singer for Newsboys, not Audio A. I don't know who AA's singer is now, but I know for a short time it was Kevin Max also of DcT. I was a lot more into that stuff when I and my kids were younger. I know people have guessed the Central PA area for where you live (I really don't care one way or the other), but we used to go to Creation and Purple Door and many local shows. The late 90's and early 2000's were a hotbed for so many great bands in the Lancaster/Lebanon area and I was happy to be able to see so many of them. Good times, but now that is becoming a memory like the old 70's and 80's rock bands I used to like so much. Maybe I'm becoming a bitter jaded old man? You kids get off my lawn!!!
