    Another great review. Well done. I would recommend you drive the 981 Spyder. It is much more refined and in particular the roof. The suspension is much more dampened than first generation Spyder, and it has the GT4 shifter so it feels similar to the GT3 touring shifter. Not counting the 911 engine power and sound. I love mine and enjoy driving it more than my 991.2 GT3 manual as i can take it to the limit without it trying to kill me and it sounds as good. I have fitted on mine the same tire sizes as the GT4 and they fit perfectly on the stock wheels, which eliminated any hint of understeer. I also fitted the GT3 control arms upfront to allow me to dial in proper alignment (camber -2.7 F, and 2.5 R) and the results are epic. It will give GT3 and GT3 RS a run for the money. I use mine mainly on track and autocross events, and I don’t think many Porsches can beat it. Highly recommended to drive and add to your collection... Mark

    While the top may take some time to assemble the huge benefit is that it can be driven with the top on with the rear window section removed. The 981 and 718 do no allow this option. With the side windows down and no rear window plenty of airflow and some shade if desired. Plus the glorius exhaust sound.

    • @wrefordmiles
      @wrefordmiles ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on - And also remove the screen between the two seats. What you then have is a sun/weather cap on the car with a very out in the open feeling and all that lovely noise coming in from the rear.
      My Spyder stays in the garage like this and the the 2nd part of the roof only ever comes into for overnight parking away from home - It’s not until you own a 987.2 Spyder that you really get why the roof is genius and not the comedy show depicted in this an other reviews.

      @@wrefordmiles Congradulations on owning one. I saw a video once, and can no longer find it about the side windows not meeting the top completely even though the windows are all the way up, along with a lot of wind noise in this condition. Is this the case with your experience? If yes, I wonder if Porsche will have it fixed for the upcoming 718 Spyder RS?

      @@carlfrederick8433 my short list included a Caterham 420R and Lotus Elise 220 I also ride motorbikes - The 987.2 Spyder in comparison to these is very refined!
      The window to roof seal is just the overlap and no more but it does keep bad weather out as for wind noise I find it better with out the 2nd part of the roof - The 987.2 Spyder is not about refinement but because of that it feels special all of the time fast or slow - It’s a unique experience that is no longer available in new models

      Jared Hodge the second generation Boxster Spyders just are all around better. I’ve owned both and the first gen car def wasn’t worlds different than a standard S of the time. I agree the 3.8 sounds gruffer and the sport exhaust is fantastic.

      @ilovetool1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jameswillard1 Is it almost like a Boxster version of the Cayman GT4? On videos anyway I think that 3.8 in the Spyder and GT4 sounds better than a 911. Looks like Luke from "Cars with Luke" is finally getting a GT4.

    • @jameswillard1
      @jameswillard1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jared Hodge i was actually in a unique position back in Spring of 2016 as I was fortunate enough to get an allocation on a GT4 but not being 100% certain it was going to happen I took advantage of a new Boxster Spyder that another dealership actually discounted (at the time GT4’s were much harder to get and more desirable despite making many more of them ....I believe the Spyders actually hold their value better now though🤔) so I had both for about a 3 month period and I can say the Boxster Spyder was every bit as fun as the GT4 and for some reason the exhaust sounded better and had much more pops than the GT4 but the one area that the GT4 was much better in was that it was much more focused in terms of handling and steering and very evident when I would switch from one to the other, but I guess that was to be expected when you look at the differences in chassis between the 2 ....the GT4 having a much stiffer body, motorsport designed suspension with several shared components with the 991 GT3, and Pilot Cup tires. They were both fabulous cars 👍🏻

    • @ilovetool1
      @ilovetool1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jameswillard1 Thanks for that. I never actually liked Porsche until I saw the Cayman GTS and GT4. A naturally aspirated mid engine car with a manual gear box is just so rare I would imagine they keep their value in the future. Which means I won't be able to afford one! haha. Cheers.

    Always been interested in one of these for exact reasons you say. You would need to be a proper driver to live with that roof, and that makes it cool. The question I always had was this. On paper the 964 RS looked like a mild spec change over the C2 but the reality was night and day different. Is this the same? Do all the little tweaks elevate the Spyder way above the regular Boxster as a drivers car? Oh, and by the way Jason, you want the ceramics because of unsprung weight saving rather than the stopping power. Cool video guys, love your work on the older interesting cars.

    Hi lads, I have one of these (and a 1971 911 T). My thoughts are, this is the 3.4 DFI engine (also in the 991 911 I think), so its a very strong and very characterful unit. Mine has the sports exhaust which absolutely makes the car, and is a must have. I can put the roof up or down in about 4 mins, its actually really simple if you watch the Porsche factory video on TH-cam. I have had it parked and have driven in torrential rain and it does not leak. I believe this is the last of the fully hydraulic steering Boxster's. I reckon it's nosier with the roof up than down, those rear buttress's flap around a bit. Mine is a PDK (first generation) gearbox, and while I would prefer the manual there were only about 4-5 of these sold here in NZ, so beggars can't be choosers etc. The 7 speed PDK is very quick though, and you can add flappy paddles to it (the push/pull system is average) from Porsche or TechArt. Final drive gearing is shorter, and way better than the next model (the 981). Handling wise the suspension setup is largely custom to the Spyder, and it pretty much leaves my previous modified 997 911 in the dust. Oh, and mine has the full leather "porn star" red interior which is striking but a bit average if you have a hangover! Hope this helps :-)

      Phil, I don’t think I have ever seen a Spyder for open sale in NZ. In any case, I have just bought one in the UK and it should be in NZ by July. Then there will be six! Btw I had PDK in my Cayman R. It was my preference for the Spyder as well. I have a manual 964 and Boxster, but the crawl and out of Auckland in those is painful.

    • @philnj1962
      @philnj1962 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, yes I believe there were only 4 that came here to NZ. Did you have that lovely Cayman R for sale recently? 964 sounds nice as well. You will love the Spyder I'm sure. I based down in the South Island so a lot less traffic issues, and some mind blowing roads.

    • @1993Turbo36
      @1993Turbo36 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil Johnson - I sold my R in 2016. It was ex UK, Carrara White, Silver Spyder alloys, Buckets etc. it was a weapon on back roads but was neither Arthur nor Martha on track days where it didn’t have the straight line speed to keep up with GT3s and was too fast for the older machinery. I now use a 2.5 Boxster to play with the older cars. The Spyder will lead a cosseted life. I know of two in Auckland and now yours. Still quite rare.

    I've always found the roof thing awkward but it starts to make sense now considering the whole package. And as others have noted it seems that with a little practice you can put it up pretty quickly.
    As for opening the door properly my advice would be to grab the door rail with your hand corresponding to the side you're sitting on (so your right hand if your're sitting on the right side) and use your other hand to operate the door pull.

    The Boxter spyder is a great looking car. Not overly powerful but light and quick nonetheless. You can see the styling elements from the 550 spyder, a car that I seen in person a few weeks ago. A really beautiful car. It would be cool to see a bigger one that can accommodate a larger engine, maybe an RS6 engine. That would be a truly awesome sports car.I'd love to review one for my channel. How do you get your vehicles?

    It’s really sad to see another review where the correct procedure for raising the top wasn’t followed. Top gear was even worse though. That top takes about a minute to raise and can withstand heavy rain. The top is one of the coolest features on that car, so lightweight and sleek in profile. The sidewindows are also nicely cut compared to other boxsters including 981 Spyder.
    Bucket seats are also a nice feature. Same seats as the foldable seats in the GT3 991.2 (not in USA).
    The rest of the review was very good.

    Another smile inducing Friday night highlight. Thank you gents. Always thought the Spider had a cachet and allure that elevated it from other Boxsters. Though I’ve always been happy with the Boxster as an entry level Porsche.
    I think the car looks amazing, sounds excellent and appears to repay some spirited driving with a throttle- compliant rear end.
    Very enjoyed Damian’s whistful Guinevere moments by the lake for then Jason’s Lancelot to appear in his white charger.
    Excellent hilarity all the way through.
    What about making a modern ‘Lil Bastard’ really light weight, tiny wooden Nardi racing steering wheel, bucket seats, silver paintwork, red leather interior.
    That would be sweet.

    I much prefer the superb handling of a Boxster against a 911; I’ve tried quite a few and that heavy engine in the back means they handle really awkwardly. All because of a silly cramped rear seat! In a Boxster the balance is spot on and is so much fun to drive! You mustn’t forget that the Boxster was born out of the spirit of the classic Spyder racers and to capitalise on the MX-5 success. It also was a way for people to try a Porsche for the first time and to have fun. Which it does in spades. And that can’t be bad.

    I own a 981 Spyder and two things are annoying:
    - long gearing
    - steering. it's quick and turns in nice but the electric steering gives no feedback and feels a bit like gum sometimes
    Comparison would be nice, i suspect the 987 to be the better car but the 981 looks better and the roof is easy.

    I currently own a 718 Boxster S. Recently I test drove a 2017 911 "base". It was decent but it felt like a bigger grand touring sports car. When I got back in my Boxster after the test drive, I was relieved to be back in it. It feels so much more responsive, lighter and with better handling (mid engine) like I could just toss it around and have fun. I don't know why Boxsters get less respect. After all, they did save Porsche from bankruptcy. Less we forget.
