    £49k buys you are near mint, 1982 930 Turbo, i know which car i would rather, the old air cooled whale tail.

    • @mikeokhravi3321
      @mikeokhravi3321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. You're brilliant. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an old Porsche? The purchase price is the tip of the iceberg. Think before you comment.

    • @peterlewis3540
      @peterlewis3540 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If one has the car serviced and maintained at an independent Porsche specialist, then running and maintaining a classic air cooled 911, should not cost the earth.
      Granted,genuine Porsche parts can be expensive, but if maintained correctly, the old 911 air cooled engines are almost bullet proof.
      A friend owns a 1983 911 Carerra, which he bought four years ago.
      Its in stunning condition, in Guards Red with Black upholstery, and two owners from new, himself and the previous owner.
      Buy the very best example you can afford and find, and then look after it.
      The independent Porsche specialist in Cardiff, has affordable hourly rates, and the knowledge to maintain your car.

    • @mikeokhravi3321
      @mikeokhravi3321 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Peter Lewis I want you to be correct in this argument, but even if one finds a reliable car, there is still the hunt for a quality example, the hunt for a reasonably priced shop (though it seems you've found one), the headache of worrying about a catastrophic event (known to occur to air-cooled Porsches), and the regular maintenance which would inevitably cost more than on a new vehicle.
      I know I was irascible, but my point was it takes a special kind of commitment to own a classic Porsche and it certainly shouldn't be driven every day. A new one is 80% of the thrills with none of the headaches.

    • @peterlewis3540
      @peterlewis3540 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is certainly very true, but when one considers the asking price of a new 911 Carerra or even a standard Boxter, the early 911s look good value.
      I was recently watching the Quentin Wilson classic Car series earlier this year, where he praised the virtues of the late 1960s 911 Scs.
      Unlike most modern 911s, which do depreciate, rather slowly i know, but they still lose some of their value over the years.
      Early air cooled 911s are becoming solid investments, and even though one has to spend good money to find an unmolested example, you will make money on one, if you are willing to maintain it well.
      We all know how much Porsche dealerships like to charge for servicing and repair, but if one can find a really good independant specialist, whose hourly rates are more realistic, maintaining a classic air cooled 911,should not blow the bank.

    • @heavnbound
      @heavnbound 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I think the backseats on the 911 are simply there so men can convince themselves or their wives that the purchase of this sports car is "practical" but how often do most 911 owners use them? IMO, if you want practicality buy a Panamera, and if you want a true, balanced sports car purchase a Cayman or a Boxster. To bash a 2-seater sports coupe because the engineers decided to lean more towards performance than practicality is in my opinion very emotional and ignorant. Which this guy, who reminds me of the obnoxious Piers Morgan is, emotional almost to the point of being a bit feminine for a man. If I owned a Boxster I would trade the look and feel of the Spyder any day for the "practicality" of the regular type. Either way I'm not going to bash one of the greatest sports cars of our generation.

    I was just on the Porsche website and I loved everything I read about the Boxter Spyder. I love the car's minimalist nature and all the design elements that evoke Porsche's proud racing history. I wonder what Eberhard Schulz would think of it. Personally I think it's a modern interpretation of his Isdera Spyder which itself was a 1980's interpretation of the 1950's Porsche 356.

    I'd honestly get a Boxster S over the Spyder, and I'd get a Cayman over either. But once you filter out Clarkson's silly narrative and watch the fast-lap, you can see that it's tremendously balanced through the turns. Just a wee bit of slip angle in the rear and making full use of all four tires. The Boxster/Cayman platform really is one of the best sports cars made.

    Hu? 944, 968 and 928 are transaxles with the gear box in the back and have perfect weigh distribution which is an even better concept that having the weight all in the middle which tends to let the cars spin faster. The 944 was once known as the best handling (stock) sports car. The funny thing is that this reality doesn't bother customers. As with the Boxster, the rear engined (really a bad concept) 911 is prefered by customers and given the stronger engines because people want it that way.

    the roof, door pulls, a/c doesnt matter its probably the best handling car on the market today so if u ask me porsche succeeded 100% with it because it does exactly what they wanted it to

  • @teeek421

    It's all a matter of style. The Cayman is indeed a coupe, and the Boxster has a soft top. But the Spyder is a slightly different design with the 550 in mind. It has the classic "double hump" in the back and a "stripped down" philosphy.
