Funny to watch them practice in summer cloths. Game time they are in their uniforms and move so precisely you almost think they are machines. This reminds you they are a bunch of very talented hard working young men and women !

I never marched one day in a college band. Got drunk with plenty of them. But by "college band" was at Camp Pendleton, Ca. 1st Marine Division. In four years I went all over the south Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Sydney, Australia, Guadalcanal and other parts of the world too. Talk about hot. 110° with 98° humidity and full dress blues, Guadalcanal sucked. But not for why we were there. The 50th aniversary of the battle. I got to meet many WW2 vets that were there too. WW2 victory/campaign medals, 2 or 3 purple hearts and MEDAL OF HONOR. And all of them more humble than meager pie. Been all over the US and was a machine gunner in war. I would not change a thing or trade my time with anyone, not even another Marine. I met some of the most amazing people, (and dicks), I could ever have the pleasure of knowing and now, am friends with most to this day. If you are young, you have the whole world ahead of you. Live today as if it is your last. Should you do band in college? I think if you can and you don't you are a fool. If for no other reason than to just have fun. Studies are hard enough. But if all your fun comes from ridiculous parties and alcohol, you really are missing out. I do not regret one single day from the Corps and will treasure it forever. I realise college isn't quite like that, but it can be while you are there. You cannot join the band after you graduate. And I have been blessed to also teach for 30+ years. You get one chance, that's it. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't or shouldn't do something. Especially if that person is you. And if you are so inclined, and can hack it, the Marine Corps will accept you up to age 27. But don't think for one second that they are going to make boot camp any easier just because you are the "old man". Or woman. In fact, those 18 year olds running circles around you in the beginning, a lot of them can't hang either. Marine boot camp has a very high attrition rate. My initial platoon was 68 on deck. On graduation day I was one of 14 originals in a platoon of 69. But the band field has more college grads among enlisted personnel. No other MOS comes close. I would say 40% of my unit had college degree and could have very easily got OCS and become officers. But they were MUSICIANS. Now, once they became Marines, they were first and foremost riflemen. Then musicians. And yes. Marine bands do go to war. As perimeter security for the commanding general. Which in our case included clearing enemy bunkers, live mine fields, watching prisoners, convoy security and living through gas attacks. Great fun...

My marching band has the same marching style as the OSU band, except we have to "swagger" which means to sway left to right for each step we take, and we also do an armswing for EVERY right step, rather than every other. We even have a "Script CHS" which is similar to script OHIO but we spell out our schools initials of "CHS" rather than OHIO.

bt25: it wasn't 90 degrees in August, it was averaging heat index of over 110. If they couldn't dress cool enough to stay upright (and I'm guessing even then there were a few who would go down) it would have been too much. Even my local high schools allowed sports attire (running, etc) and shirtless for the guys. It was FAR hotter than 90 degrees in the midwest, everywhere, this summer.

Unless times have change a good number of the players you see in the band are woodwind players who check out brass instruments so they can march...I was at OSU in the late 80's/90's and I was surprised at how many ww players learn quickly enough to make it into the band....then again, that may be why the first time I heard the band "open" up I was underwhelmed by the volume as opposed to the set number all being actual brass players...just my opinion as I still think the bands sounds great!!
