  • Raag Abhogi Kanhra (Khayal & Tarana)
Vocalists : Ustad Salamat Ali Khan & Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan
Tabla Player : Allah Ditta Khan
    Sarangi Player : Zahoori Khan
    A Syed Wajid's Presentation
*It is said that the "Sham Chaurasi Gharana" was founded in the 16th century by Hazrat Data Shajlal Shah , a contemporary of Miyan Tansen . He was born in 1556 and lived till 1605. Legend has it that the Rajput Raja Shyam Singh, at that time, ruled over 84 villages. Eighty Four, in Hindi, is 'Chaurasi'. So, it all started from this small village in the state of Punjab in Mughal India.
However, there is no written proof about the founder of the Gharana or how long this tradition goes. The Wikipedia page suggests that the Gharana was founded by a certain duo Miyan Chand Khan & Miyan Suraj Khan.
Whatever maybe the case, it is upto the historians to find out. For the music lovers of today's time, Sham Chaurasi can be related to only one collective being of Ustad Nazakat & Salamat Ali Khan. After the demise of the amazing duo, Sharafat Ali Khan and Shafqat Ali Khan carried forward the Sham Chaurasi tradition!

Most scintillating and mesmerizing rendition of raag Aboghi by the Ustad Duet. What an amazing voice modulation and control over sruthi and layam. Expansive and exhaustive sangathis depicting the true essence of Abighi. Its a typical Carnatic Ragam that will inspire confidence. Abhoghi is indeed the personification of courage combined with conviction, portrayal of directors enriched with devotion and a depiction of determination emboldened with dedication. The artists exploring Mind bowling depth and width of Aboghi. One of best and memorable rendition of Aboghi. Listening to such raga is an aesthetic experience that is beyond expression. Hats of the musicians🙏

The story of "Rajput Raja Sham Singh ruling over 84 villages" is nonsensical as the village Sham Chaurasi's (in the present day district of Hoshiarpur) history doesn't bear it out.

    • @hargitsingh4971
      @hargitsingh4971 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The gharana is believed to have been founded in the 16th century by Chand Khan and Suraj Khan who were contemporaries of Tansen at the court of Mughal emperor Akbar. Successive generations of musicians in the gharana specialised in the dhrupad form of singing and evolved a tradition of duet vocal (jugalbandi) performances. Meer Baksh and Khairdeen, Karam Elahi Khan, Vilayat Ali and Hadayat Khan, Ghulam Shabir Khan and Ghulam Jafar Khan, Nazakat Ali and Salamat Ali are noted practitioners of jugalbandi from this gharana.
The gharana is centred at Shamchaurasi in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, India; alternate spellings include Shamchurasi. An explanation of the name is that sham is taken from the name of the Sufi saint, Sant Shami Shah and (chaurasi =84) was named after a cluster of 84 villages which constituted a land revenue unit. According to one legend, the founders were given a parcel of land here as a grant to them by Mughal Emperor Akbar. In an alternative version of the origin, the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah "Rangila" was said to have been so impressed by the gharana that he gave all income from the 84 local villages, known as 'Chaurasi', to the Sufi saint Sant Shami Shah.

Although its is truly scintillating to hear the one who renders the super sonic speeded brigas and taans, it is equally extraordinary of the one that renders the real jeevan of the raag aabhogi, with his subtle, powerful abhogi raaga essence in the calm yet impactful outpouring. Yes , that's is what this Gandhara duo has gifted us with.

Sye Waji Saheb thank you very much for your reply. May God bless you. When I was working in Delhi one of my friends from Pakistan Dr. Abid Ali Dost gifted me a few tapes of Ali Brothers which contained various raagas rendered by them like Saraswathi, Gorak Kalyan, Gavati etc. Each peace is worth its weight in gold. I first heard Ali brothers sometime during late 60s. Since then I had fallen flat for their Music. Insha Allah I hope to hear more music of Ali brothers through you. May God bless you for ever

Actually I beg to make small difference in the persecption of samirji. When a person had asked the great sage of south India Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi , whether it was Music that made Shri Thyagaraja Swami,( the great saint composer and one of the trinity composers of carnatic music), attain self realisation( Mooksha), The Bhagawan replied " pettradai paadinaar" , meaning , the composer had already attained self realisation and it was from that dimension of existence , outpoured all the monumental compositions. I gave this preamble , because, Indian classical music (particularly) is one of the many , perhaps the easier, modes of vehicles that will help ( only if it is approached from the spiritual bent of mind) to reach higher levels of consciousness . if this Divine art is approached from just art point of view , meaning , from a view point of skill, craft, virtuosity, angling to impress or dazzle the listeners, then it remains at only that level. It will get one, all the name, fame, etched in history, none like him name, lots of admirers, may be students and all that is, of this material world only. But for elevating both the musician and the listener, to the higher levels of it requires the musician to completely self sacrifice, at the feet of The Art, which will/ may result in -Very few "fans", very little recognition, almost none of the material world benefits I have listed above . the two things that certainly happen is, firstly the " need" portion of the musician's basic existence will definately be taken of. Secondly, there will be a complete transformation of the heart and mind of the musician and because of that , the listener too. this will be the vehicle that will take both the musician and his/her listeners on their individual journeys toward the higher levels of consciousness, resulting in their attitudenal change in their mind toward love, generosity, help ever hurt never, brotherhood of mankind and fatherhood of The God Almighty. There will be no competition, no misunderstanding or rift throughout the musicians' lives.
So, going by the history reporting about the duo brothers, they were v great musicians, period.

Music especially Indian classical is pathway to God.
If you are serious student then it becomes a conveyor belt without your knowledge.
This state of being is also transmitted to listeners.
The Raga, the singer ,the listener become ONE.
This is becoz of potency of Raga plus the musician who is a sadhaka.

@@sria8163 extraordinary expression of your understanding sir🙏🙏. So so so true, what you have said. Music leads to the advaitha bhava feeling wise. We may indian music in particular, because, of the lyrical content....which is a lovely way of the naaman rupa form of contemplation. Having said that, I do believe that raagaa aalaapana being designed the way they are( only vowel content), is to focus the singing mind and the listening mind to both become the "Saamaanya aadyaathmika Saadhaka", becoming one , toward the Oneness.

With the limited knowledge of classical, I am showered with bliss.
Here I specially liked the development of the rag (badhat ? perhaps)
the way in which it starts with serenity and then unfolds in numerous ways
touching the super-conscious level again and yet again and yet ....and....
I do not know how people listen to such great renderings without floods of tears

I was frustrated for some intimate personal matters. So I purchased a real high-end music system of 'Sonodine' brand
      (sort of a revenge).
Along with that I purchased some LPs.
This was one of those LPs, and Abhogi Kanhda was the raga which made the DUO reside in me permanently.

What a divine blessing that mankind has been gifted with this Gandharva Duo!!! This aboghi all though sung in the hindustani system of indian music, there are so many many phrases that these mahaan vidwans sing , that are typically Carnatic music phrases(we call it pidigal) . Listening to these phrases from the Divine voices is indeed an inexpressible feeling. It tugs at one's heart !! It is so humbling to listen to this oneness of theses two mighty systems.

The reverencial bhakti that they had toward their Divine is so evident even in their swara phrases. Every swara is sung with an utter prayerful humble with so much bhayabhakthi, as in mindful of the sacraedness of every swara, as one would approach their esteemed Guru!! In South india , the term bhayabhakthi is used to denote / express utter complete surrendered careful approach toward Divinity. In this instance, it is Naada Beahmam Itself! ! . The Shamchaurasi (or Shamchurasi) gharana is believed to have been founded in the 16th century by Chand Khan and Suraj Khan who were contemporaries of Tansen at the court of Mughal emperor Akbar.

The Rag is the same as Kalavati by which name it is more popular in Northern India. A great work of Art.

Abhogi and Kalawati are the different ragas
With moorchhana from Abhogi’s Madhyam we can have the scale of Kalawati
Means Madhyam of Abhogi is Shadaj of Kalawati
And Pancham of Kalawati is Shadaj of Abhogi
Abhogi: Sa Re ga ma Dha Sa
Sa Dha ma ga Re Sa
Kalawati: Sa Ga Pa Dha ni Sa
Sa ni Dha Pa Ga Sa

Kalavathi is altogether a different raga. It is equivalent of malayamarutha of South Indian style. And abhOgi is karnataki origin raaga.

I have a strong belief that Ustad SAK was even above Mian Tansen....I mean the improvisations and sheer pace in taans is just not seen or experienced with other classical singers. I have listened to all the Kings and Queens of Classical music but USAK was above all.....Even Ustad Amir khan who knew more than 300 Shrutis didn't show such capabilities as USAK. BGAK is also one of my favorites but Salamat ali Khan went above all of these great names. It really disappoints and saddens me when I look at Sham churasi gharana, especially Shafqat and his kids are just making a fool out of themselves.

However, there is no written proof about the founder of the Gharana or how long this tradition goes. The Wikipedia page suggests that the Gharana was founded by a certain duo Miyan Chand Khan & Miyan Suraj Khan.

Its so unfortunate that in Pakistan all original Hindustani classical songs originally in Braj Bhasha were forcibly 'converted' into urduised renditions as this was actually in Braj Bhasha - the raga is dedicated to Lord Krishna as are all ragas in the vedic system devoted to a particular vedic God i.e. Raga Malkauns is dedicated to Goddess Parvati etc This duo is in fact my favourite, a versatile couple of classical singers originally from India who remained in partitioned India ( Pakistan) - what a shame really that they had to sing part of this song in urdu.
