I'm in my sophomore year of highschool and just switched into RCM with my studio! After playing for almost 8 years my teacher decided to put me in level 6 and it has felt perfect for me! Exams are in like 2 weeks and I'm very stressed so thanks for the vid!
I'm in the US and my teacher doesn't use the system, but refers to it a lot. Ex: she was talking about taking AP music in high school and how it's a lot like the RCM system.

I love this. This is exactly the info I've been looking for for a week! So many piano methods out there it's nice to have the RCM. Also, good to know we've testing here in Brandon!
my teacher was very intent on doing all level 8, 9 and 10 but after I took my grade 8 exam, he decided that I could go straight to grade 10. the difference in difficulty was a HUgE jump, but it turned out alright in the end.
The point you made about a Bachelor's degree being equivalent to the ARCT is highly dependant on where you go to school. If you want to go to a school with a smaller music program (like say the University of Lethbridge) then the audition requirements are only at a Grade 8 level, whereas if you audition for a school like U of C or Western the requirements are a Grade 10 minimum (i believe). Finally, if you decide to audition for UBC or McGill or U of T the audition requirements are ARCT level playing at a minimum. Not all bachelor's degrees are the same.
Yes, exactly. The entrance requirements for most smaller/standard universities are around a grade 8 level - what I meant was that by finishing four years of university, your level would be equivalent to ARCT. And of course the more challenging colleges require higher entrance exam requirements. Sorry for the confusion!
Interesting! I was thinking about going for RCM exams a few months ago, but seeing the prices was kind of a bummer. But I went to see a piano teacher to assess my level to know what would be reasonable, and she agreed with me for a level 6. I was very happy, since I had been playing piano for a year when I see her (16 months now). But I need to say that I had musical background (I've played clarinet and alto sax in high school) and I play about 3 hours a day in my good days, 1-2 hours otherwise (so 10-15 hours a week). I'll probably take a more local option (preparatory school from Université Laval in Quebec city, where I live). I was told the exams are like 40$ for practical, 20$ for theory. Way more affordable!
@Sani Swaro @Mortician's Daughter @Read hakomari@@zombifieddreams5815 lol it went pretty good actually, I'm not extremely proud of my mark, but it's still great! Unfortunately the judge was really strict :'( so I got a lot of points deducted for small errors; but NOT ENOUGH TO GET ME A GOOD MARK

One thing that wasn't mentioned about corresponding theory. You have 5 years to match practical with theory if you want the certificate. I did harmony 1 5 years ago but at the time i was still at Gr 5 practical. Now I need to retake my advance rudiments to match Gr 8 since its too old now (I'm better at theory than practical).

After this video I went to the RCM syllabus to look up the requirements for ARCT. It says: "Candidates are expected to perform with confidence, communicating the essence of the music while demonstrating a command of the instrument." This may be silly but I dream to do this and sets my goals a little higher.

Anyway, just wondering how Garry Burgess is doing? Wondering if you've been able to do something with piano with your injured hand. If you're reading this let us know.
Interesting. Unfortunately we don't have such a system in our country. One question: The pieces in the RCM levels are very different (technique, epoches, styles etc.). Do the students study all or nearly all of the pieces of one level before starting with the next level? I mean: If they go on too fast, maybe they miss something that is important for a higher level?
I can comfortably learn Chopin's nocturnes in a couple of weeks. My stretch pieces are Chopin etudes. I learned revolutionary, and right now I'm learning ocean (going for the easier ones first). liszt etude transcendental etudes, paganini etudes are all to intense, but Hungarian rhapsodies are easier for me. I think about 10 as I'm about that level too. Most of Chopin's Nocturnes are rated at a Level 9-ARCT Level. However, you really need to work on your sight reading in order to get up to an ARCT standard.
Is there a graded system in the US? I like the idea of including theory, performance, history, ear training, etc all-in-one. I would like to find a teacher in the US that uses a method like this.
Hey I recently finished a piece but I don’t have anyone to play it so if anyone what’s to play it I’ll email it and all I ask is to post a video of you playing it so I can hear a human play it
What's the benefit of taking the exams now, having never taken an RCM exam before? I've been playing piano for 9 years, and my piano studio doesn't use grades (I live in the US). I won't get high school credit, and I'm not going to a music college or music major. AluminiumFalcon you shouldn't worry about that. If your current teacher does not know about grading but is nonetheless a great teacher you could: 1. Keep practicing with him but get consuling elsewhere about RCM grades or 2. Ditch him completely and get yourself a RCM pianist teacher, your call.
Not all teachers use these systems. That doesn't mean that they are bad performers or teachers. My teacher never really paid much attention to RCM, though we did use unofficial or more local systems of "ranking." In conservatory, it never even came up. Though some students did talk about levels in their past, I think by that point it was less pertinent as there was a sort of equalizer with admission to a music program. The point is that there is no real standardization for what constitutes a "good" teacher in regards to specific pedagogical methodologies or implementation of certain grading systems. It's pretty objective. Keep in mind that most famous pianists in the past never had these systems and could play and teach circles around these people who cling to the RCM.

Fruits and Ghosts don't worry about that. Worry about yourself. I consider that really good. I'm also grade 10 lvl though at 13 years old but I'm not taking the test because I find it'll be too stressful for me in the future
ah man that is such a big deal! they are ARCT and 12 and you are grade 10 and 13 years old! what about LRCT and 11 years old would that double your stress rofl
I think that a lot of teachers generally lack in teaching education; pedagogy, psychology, teaching principles, didactic and methodology of music teaching. Knowing how to play an instrument and having a few teaching certificates is simply not enough. There is a whole science behind teaching a music subject. And this is where a university comes in, as a place where one studies all of the professional teaching skills. RCM exams are not enough..

I know this video is a year old, but I am watching it for the first time and I just wanted to mention that “rudiments” is pronounced like “rood-iments.” And not Rudd.
I have a test in august and am super nervous 😭😭😭😭
i know 4 ppl who have their level 10.. they're in grade 9... i have nothing...
Idk why, but the thumbnail made me think of Allysia getting married with the piano book. And she’s showing off her ‘new’ wedding ring 😆😆😆
-don’t kill me-
I’m currently at a grade 10 level at 13, but where I learn it’s very stressful because most of my teacher’s students are at an ARCT level at 12 years old.
Fruits and Ghosts don't worry about that. Worry about yourself. I consider that really good. I'm also grade 10 lvl though at 13 years old but I'm not taking the test because I find it'll be too stressful for me in the future
ah man that is such a big deal! they are ARCT and 12 and you are grade 10 and 13 years old!
what about LRCT and 11 years old would that double your stress rofl
i did the alfred begineers, then skipped to grade 3 and skipped to grade 6
Changiss.
My exams are in june 😓😩
But you know, they're great for high school credit!!!!
Exactly! Good luck!

What about tuition...

My friends are doing arct in grade 8. -_-

Knight H steering wheel broken
send help im doing mine tmr
I think that a lot of teachers generally lack in teaching education; pedagogy, psychology, teaching principles, didactic and methodology of music teaching. Knowing how to play an instrument and having a few teaching certificates is simply not enough. There is a whole science behind teaching a music subject. And this is where a university comes in, as a place where one studies all of the professional teaching skills. RCM exams are not enough..
LMAOOOOO I’m in grade nine and level seven at rcm but yet I don’t really practice piano
Lol
I am 12 and will be in ARCT next year
Perhaps LRCM
