I went for my exam this morning and my examiner compared to yours and your friends mine is actually nice.Or is it because she asked me if it’s my first time doing an exam and I said yes because IT IS and she always says take your time to look at the sight reading stuff and start when your are ready for my pieces. Before my exam I was actually almost praying for a nice and a female examiner because those are usually nicer.
My examiners were always so dishonest and superficial. For gods sake if I didn’t do well, I wish they could have been more honest with me. I have an impulsive fear of even pursuing music now because of this superficiality. I hated piano exams and I always will, and what an absolute waste of money. Hundreds upon thousands of dollars wasted. It hurts me more knowing that I was always lied to. I hope examiners can read this and gain more insight and understand the perspective of students, because it’s crucial to fuelling this dying industry. Though I hope people lose interest in RCM qualifications and become less fixated on one way to become a musician. There are simply many more ways to create music and to attain true artistry and musicianship. RCM makes me feel like a loser, yet it has taught me that my talent radiates differently, which is a good thing. And to those all taking exams, always remember that music is much much much more than a stupid grade, it is the essence of human identity, it is subjective and individual like a painting, it does not mean that one piece or one interpretation is wrong and the other correct, every iteration is beautiful in its own expression. This is the beauty of music that RCM is taking away. This is my final realization.
This exam is not for the making of musicians. It is for creating knowledgeable amateur music enthusiasts. That is why musicians who want to make music never feel satisfied with these exams.
There's something so sterile about conducting music like this. So clinical and takes away every bit of joy and expression about it. I understand that interpretation and expression can be emulated once you can play something in an autonomous state and to do so, you need to be accurate. However, this really stripped away every bit of joy classical music ever brought me. I now strictly only find joy in contemporary styles. There are HEAPS of technically difficult contemporary pieces too, so you can't use the argument that classical is more demanding. The elitism and fabricated "superiority" of classical music has truly turned this wonderful style into the most mechanical and clinical act for young children learning it. Just look at the comments of young people freaking out!!

@@fruitcupsandorangejuice Hi! I finished the exam quite a while ago, and it went pretty well. RCM will send you the sight-reading piece about 24 hrs before your exam (mine was a bit later than 24 hrs though), so you'll have more than enough time to prepare it.
Though perfect pitch is very helpful in music, you can still learn to create, play and enjoy music without it. Not all musicians possess perfect pitch. It's called ear training because one is actually learning to distinguish one note from another. All it takes is practice. Yes, those who've been studying music for longer might enjoy an advantage. But it's not out of reach for newer students.
As a violinist who never studied ear training I found everything to be rather easy (thankfully all the chords were in fundamental state, which made the analysis of the progression easier)... apart from the sight reading, is that asked even to non pianist? I could never do that...
