I have been a ride operator for 11 years now. I actually get guests after I measure their kid and they're too short say that "they'll take the risk" Like are you serious??? The air gate thing is a real thing too. They have sensors on them and has shut my ride down multiple times. I also have seen so many injuries from cell phones and other items. Just remember if you ever get a job as a ride op, you will get cussed out for doing your job sometimes. You all nailed the things we hate! Awesome video! If I was to add one more thing we hate it when we're measuring a kid and everyone starts chanting "let them ride!" and also booing us if they're too short.

I'd be the one guy defending the ride op. And I'd really let the parents know it's their own fault their kid can't ride and to quit wasting everyone's time. Like why is everyone getting mad at the ride op for doing their job? They should be mad at the Karen (parents) for trying to go against the rules!

Ride op here! Thanks for making this video. I actually had an instance yesterday at work regarding the height dilemma. It’s far too common that parents think that their child is taller than they are, and that they cannot do wrong, or that nothing can go wrong on their visit. I just wish people were more respectful of the ride ops and the park policy. It’s an unfortunate reality to have to deal with disrespectful and nasty guests, but that’s just a part of the job.

I gotta be honest; I have approached ride ops and asked if the ride was down for the day or just temporarily. I prefer it when parks put up a sign stating that this ride will be unavailable today. A live person standing out in front of a closed ride gives me hope...I don't want it to be false hope.

It's been 22 years since I was a ride operator. I operated a rollercoaster at Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. The air gate thing is especially a hassle. You are right. Used to drive me crazy. Someone pushing on the gates would cause the train to stop dispatching. We had a white line in front of the gates that guests had to stand behind. I would give the speil. Please step back behind the line the gates are now closing. And guests still would not listen and step back. I don't.
Know how the new air gate systems work. But I know that the old ones when the gates were about 8/10 of the way closed They would snap closed. Like on a Spring. I would be nice the first time and flip the switch back to open if a guest hadn't cleared. And i would again say please step back from the gate . If they failed to move, I figured out that I could whip the guest with the gate By waiting until the gate was 8/10 of the way closed and then flip the switch from close to open back to closed real fast And it would whip them back. If it caused the dispatch to stop by somebody shaking the gate. I would do the same thing real fast open to close And it would whip the gate out of their hands. Some people might think that that's mean. But I didn't know what else to do with a guest Not listening or paying attention. Sitting on the top.
Rail, we would tell them to get down. But if they were sitting on the bottom rail, we really didn't say anything. I can say that Being a ride Operator was one of the most fun and exciting times of my life. I actually encourage the younger generation to go out and try it. Just be responsible while doing it.

I had a family come into the train station at the park I work at, with their elderly grandma in a wheelchair with them. She was hunched over, not able sit up or hold on if was needed to brace self. She couldn't get into her own seat either. So I didn't let her board per policy. The family was irate because the woman, 90ish years old, couldnt get on any rides. I honestly do believe she didn't know where she was.

Similar when I worked in Disneyland Paris a family with a severely disabled son who thought he’d be perfectly ok on Star Tours.
When I was telling people about it, other people said they had to deal with the same family trying to get on Thunder mountain, space mountain, basically everything, the family seemed to think because their son was severely disabled and at disney he’d be miraculously be able to get on rides that throw you about and he’d be fine

A big one for me is littering the ride with scrunchies and gum. Ride ops may not like the question about when a ride will reopen but it is normal to ask that question when anything is off schedule. It's equally frustrating to the guest when the ride op gives the short answer by saying they don't know. It's best to explain to the guest what is happening and what is being done to remedy the situation. Then you can give them the short and long estimate and allow them to decide what to do.

There was a couple times this wasn’t the case. To this day I remember them both vividly. One instance was a guests son wasn’t tall enough to go on a ride. He started yelling at me in front of other guests. Another instance was a parent had to go on ride because his child was didn’t meet the height requirement to ride by himself. The father started cursing me out to stop the ride. With other parents with their children on the ride as well.

Good list. I could add 100 more (like, say, when you get off the coaster, don’t stop on the station platform to talk about your ride).
But I would quibble with one thing: if a ride goes down and there’s an attendant standing at the closed entrance, there’s nothing wrong with politely asking, “Any idea what time it may re-open?” It may be repetitive for employees to hear, but it’s a natural question to ask, and it’s not unusual that the employee may know something - whether it’s likely to be a short fix, a long fix, or a closure for the rest of the day.

    - Complaining about getting stapled
    - Asking for airtime room
    - Trying to go for extra room with restraints
    - Complaining vocally about ride operations
    - Pretending to know more about their jobs than they do
    - Requesting rows
    - Acting like not getting a preferred row is the end of the world
    - Trying to talk to them casually about rides/parks/etc. while they’re working

    - Complaining about the quality of the ride to the ride operators

It's sad cuz most of that stuff is common sense. My favorite is "what time will the ride open" I sat by a ride once and watched person after person asking this. I got so frustrated that I actually started telling people before they walked up. The attendant was very grateful. I even joked n said they should just have a sign saying that they don't know when it would open. People would still ask tho..lol..
Another one to add, especially for larger guests "utilize the test seat by the ride entrance". Trying to get a guest into a restraint and they don't fit, really slows down ops.

Holiday World & Splashin Safari offers free sodas all day long. Multiple kiosks to just walk through, get a blast of cold air and a free soda. This means there's also tons and tons of cups they go through everyday. But you never see them sitting anywhere. There are trashcans at the beginning, middle and end of every ride line. More trashcans scattered around the park, smoking areas, next to benches, anywhere people are likely to pause for a minute. Most surfaces are also rounded so you can't just tuck your drink on a railing or curb. This really promotes people utilizing the trashcans.

The list I would say is pretty good coming from my perspective as a ride op but there are a few things I would add. One is related to downtime. Don’t ask us why the ride is down. Even if we know why the ride is closed you most likely won’t know what it means and even if you do you are not qualified to fix the ride. Also this one might be personal preference but at least at the rides I work at we don’t offer preferred seating on a busy day. I know everyone wants to have a specific row but the more people we put in that one row makes that line longer and makes the actual line longer. I will fill the chutes behind the air gates with one train full of guests and then when the gates close I add more people. But if I fill the front or back with more and more people I have less rows to work with and therefore diminished capacity. Now say the row is open yeah go for it you can take row 6 or whatever but if it’s already full forget about it.

    Interesting and informative video!
Universal Studios has free lockers outside of the ride lines and a full security checkpoint with metal detectors to circumvent the issues with phones.
One thing that I would like to see implemented is digitally checking a potential rider's height. Simply attach a laser pointer to a wall and have them stand against the wall. If they're not tall enough to break the beam, they can't ride. There could even be a scale at the bottom which checks to make sure that they're not secretly standing on their toes or anything else like that. If either of those conditions aren't met, it sets off a little alarm and flashes a red light. If the rider passes, it has a ding and a green light. Also, I'd give the ride operators a secret button that will make this device trigger a negative response even if it has determined that the potential rider could ride. That way, operators could reject those that they think shouldn't ride for safety reasons without getting blamed for rejecting them. You know, "It's not up to me! I have to check anyone who is close with the sensor. The sensor rejected your kid, not me. Management will fire me if I don't abide by the sensor." Just a thought.
Oh, and your comment about running a theme park made me think of this! Have you ever played the board games "Funfair" or "Unfair"? They're both about running thee parks. "Funfair" is the easier, less complicated, nicer, and shorter of the two. It allows players to build their theme parks in piece without worry of another player breaking any part of what they've built. With that said, "Unfair" let's you do things like file a frivolous lawsuit against another player's park so that they lose their employee card of a person making balloon animals right before they would've paid out at the end of the game. You know, because you're "concerned about the choking hazard a popped balloon could cause". 😅 Though it's not so fun when that player gets revenge by sending hooligans to your park to sabotage or vandalize a ride that you had built up as your best attraction.😢

At my local park (BGW), there is a coaster called Griffon, where people sometimes hop a fence outside of the station into the handicap line, so they can sneak back into the front of the front row line, oftentimes cutting in front of hundreds of people who have been waiting in line for an hour. The ride operators constantly tell them to go to the back of the line. A year or two ago, someone got fed up, and it resulted in a large brawl that made the local news. I've heard every excuse in the book including it's their birthday, they rode it 3 times earlier, they traveled x amount of hours to ride, etc. I've even seen wild tall hairdos and platform flip flips on kids, and you could tell that they practiced at home how to stand up to the height stick.

People really do need to be aware of loose objects - and not just phones! Shoes too!
People have lost their flip flops and it's insane to think about having to then walk on a super rough - and most likely BLAZING HOT - surface until they can actually retrieve them. And you know shoes at the parks are gonna be way more than you could find at Walmart.
And then there are the idiots who lose their hat on a coaster and decide to run into a forbidden area - that's forbidden for a REASON??? - and end up decapitating themselves for a 15 dollar hat. Like...Just inform the park services that your hat fell off and they'll retrieve it when they can?? Losing your hat shouldn't make you lose your head - literally and figuratively!

Ive rode batman a ton of times, and one day (at the time i was kot rall enough to ride superman), and they ended up mixing up the height sticks. So i go to the bottom, get checked snd he says im good ro go. Then at the top they had supermans height stick and not Batman's height stick and measure me and say you're way too short bud. You can't ride. Then i get mad. I tell my dad, and he told the guy. The guy at the bottom was confused. He said okay, ill check again. He checks and said im good to go. Then i go up AGAIN with my dad, and then at rhe top they said im tok short and ro stop comint up. Then the fiy said if tou xaj progude s gideo of rhe height working down there, we'll let you on. So what'd we do? We did that and they STILL DIDNT LET ME ON. We told guest relations and they were well aware that the stick was mixed up. I get it, they dont ger paid enough to deal with arguments even though ive rode rhe ride before. Like it isnt my fault they mixed up height sticks and guest relations was aware of it but didn't do anything.
