How to Build a Chainsaw Mill from Scratch

  • Building your own chainsaw mill from scratch to accommodate your bar and powerhead is a great way to produce lumber from logs. Milling this way is a versatile and low cost entry point to logging and yields slabs and rough cut boards to your own dimensions.

    Really enjoyed the video. Want to do one myself. For all the complainers here, if you don’t have all the gear, then go buy one. If you do have all the equipment like I do, then go ahead and enjoy the experience of making your own from someone who laid the process out from start to finish. I am sure there are many units out there for the buying, but there is nothing like using something you’ve made yourself.

    Great job. For those people who think it took too many tools..... or time.....or too complex.....quit watching diy videos. Many tools or projects people build require a variety of tools and most of the time end up costing way more than what you can buy them for....from China. That’s not really the point. If you want the cheapest tool to do your mill work, by all means, go buy one. The author of this video didn’t say it was going to be cheaper or very quick to build. He decided to build his own quality tool and share his experience with those of us interested in watching. I appreciate the craftsmanship. And in the end, he’ll end up with a tool he can pass onto someone who hopefully will appreciate it. Again, great job pal. Don’t let the nay-sayers drag you down.

      well, you can build it just with an angle grinder and a welder, but 70 $ is a good price for it. i must build it cause here in italy it cost 200$ or more (and aslo cause i build almost all my tools=)

    • @keithlucas6260
      @keithlucas6260 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, just because we can, doesn't mean we should.....adding up the materials in the build list is around $70 plus labor time and added loss of productivity and revenue from this diverted effort. Simple economics and having spent fourty years in manufacturing.

      @@keithlucas6260 Keith Lucas but sometimes even if the shop one is cheap and ready to use it doesn't mean it is a good one. Making your own is for sure a lifetime durable tool, and also it will be easier to fix, since you made it. Every time i bought a cheap tool i had to modify something to make it better. Or simply you need something really specific. It isn't only a matter of money

      the type of chain does make a difference, if you get micro chisel with skip tooth then even a small chainsaw can pull a big bar
      it comes down to howw much drag you have with how many teeth that are busy cutting and how aggressive are they cutting

    For the ultimate chainsaw milling book, try Will Maloff's "Chainsaw Lumbermaking" ISBN 0-918804-12-4. Available secondhand at exorbitant prices, but free from Google books. I own a Granberg mill and the lumbermaker both. Takes a big saw to mill a big tree. The engine runs continuosly and takes a lot of abuse. But I made my woodshed with a Haddon lumbermarker and a Stihl 170 -- an entry level saw. I chose small logs and took it easy. For logs over 30 cm (12") you will need a much bigger saw, Stihl 600 series and a long bar such as you have.I like that crank mechanism, Granberg does not have one.

Dunno. The fact that you can't keep the saw aimed at the ends is annoying to me.

    Do yourself a favour and install an oiler. Some wood is very dry and the saw oiler cant keep up. It should be installed on the cutting side of the bar- just after the nose. That way you will have lots of oil to keep your bar from burning up.
