  • How to: Make a chainsaw milling attachment.
    In this video I run through the making of a milling attachment for my 1970s Homelite 1130G chainsaw. This is a 100cc saw with tons of power for milling. I tried to use a regular crosscutting chain to rip this log because I was excited to try it out... We got one slab ripped but it definitely wasn’t ideal. Next time Ill use a chain more suited for milling.

    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    Nice build! One recommendation get a ripping chain for that saw. Much better for ripping a log you are doing.

    If you tack all 4 clamp plates together you can drill all the holes in the same spots so they all match, sand tacks off, seperate, then debur drill holes, and weld the spacers on.

    Man,, I like your fab bench! Been looking to make a chainsaw sawmill myself, interesting video, I can't weld worth a dime but what I burn in stays. Don't think I will go through all that though, 7min and two men pushing and pulling,, should have backed off, re sharpened and started at the other end. then got a maul and just split the bad end to open it up and you could finish that off later. Really want to see how long under good circumstances it takes to mill up a log hard or soft. A buddy of mine in the Cascades just bought a mill from Harbor freight $3000, it runs a 5hp gas with a 2.5 -3" bandsaw, it works beautifully, cuts thru a 12" x10' in about 45-1mins time. But it ain't portable. It does however cut up to I believe its 30", but you have to load the log's on it. I'm thinking,,,, the money of about $150 for the ones on eBay are cheap enough after watching this and the results. Not condemning, you do excellent work, just seems it either needs something we else or you should do another video. Kinda took the will to build my own outta me.

    You should really protect your hands and arms when you are welding, it's not a good look for someone instructing. That ultra violet from the arc can really do some damage deep into your flesh. On the plus side a very instructive video and nice mill.

    It’s nice to see those old powerful saws still at work. I use an old ProMac850 on my mill and it cuts great. Sharp chain makes all the difference. In my experience the top plate angle on each tooth doesn’t really affect speed as much as the smoothness of the cut surface. I will switch chains from 10deg to 30deg and speed is really similar. But when either are dull you really notice. Thanks for the great video. I love the metal work.

    try filing your chain teeth to a 10-12 deg angle with an electric mechanical sharpener to insure consistency from tooth to tooth. Harbor Freight has a nice one for like $50 or less with a coupon or on sale. Also, angle your saw at 30-45 deg angle and don't swivel it back and forth, let the good sharp chain eat it's way thru, your cuts will be awesomely smooth.

  • @oldoldpilgrim1885
    @oldoldpilgrim1885 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When ripping straight down the log as you did, you only get tiny chips that resemble the powder that comes from cross cutting with a dull chain. I sometimes make boards with a homemade milling attachment that looks frighteningly similar to yours. (:- )

    Dude- great build, good video. But we don’t need to hear the high speed audio of the chainsaw running- especially at full volume while it’s squealing over your voice over. I’d rather hear what you’re saying. Just a little constructive criticism. Anyway- great build- I’m subbed and I’ll be checking back on this one when I build my first mill.
