As a Norwegian, this is the image of Thor I grew up with. Red head and a huge belly. Whoever claims this is disrespectful towards culture and stuff needs to check their sources. Marvel on the other hand is way different from the “cultural” image of Thor. 😅🤣 loves both versions, but Marvel is very different from the original tales and image of the Norse characters, Marvel Thor is American, that’s also why he is pictured differently than Thor in Scandinavian comics. It’s a different purpose and sales point.

I think the belly should have been a bit more of a square to fit the way I picture Thor, but I do agree that he has always been a big boy. Marvel's Thor is a Calvin Klein model, not a thunder God, lol. Thor is the rough kind of handsome and that includes some fat on top of those big muscles. I still think Peter Madsens Valhalla is close to the perfect depiction of how I see Thor, even if the style is a little cute. That body type is how I see Thor.

While I have no problem with this depiction of Thor and find it quite refreshing-to say it's truer to Norse mythology because he is large is false in accordance to this channel's words as well as other Norse Mythology historians. Kratos is driven by rage and despair in most of the games, and betrayed when he is tricked to slaughter his family. But when he's put in a position of authority like a general of Sparta or the new God of War, he becomes drunk with power. He is lustful, temperamental, prideful and only has a mild soft spot for children that remind him of his first daughter. Regardless of all of that, he won't hesitate to destroy a city or and all of humanity to pursue his own goals. Once he leaves the world of the Greek pantheon in ruins, he hates all the gods including himself. When he moves to the world of the Norse mythology he wants to live the simple life of a human putting his past behind him including his power. To me, this depiction of Thor feels extremely accurate and realistic. He's got that 'Eddie Hall-ish' extreme strongman build, and seems like the kind of guy who could pick someone clean off the floor with one hand. Armor wise, although the armor isn't extremely practical, I feel like that is also extremely thematic. Thor has always been portrayed as foolhardy and bullheaded, so the wide open area in the chest could be a 'I gave you this much vulnerable area yet you can't kill me' kind of thing. He also shouldn't be built like Kratos, as the Norse ideal body is different from the Greek. Greek was all about form, while Norse was all about sheer strength. Just feels like it hit all the points for me

It's another to face one's own reality and accept that one wouldn't be the good guy when one gets these superpowers because of you aren't the pinnacle of morality in ordinary life, why would you be with superpowers? All that would do is to amplify your best but also your worst behaviour and make it much more extreme.

This Thor literally looks a fat guy who has only lifted potato chips and beer into his mouth his entire life instead of any form of weight. You cannot look at a picture of Eddie Hall and tell me there are any similarities in physique outside of the fact that Eddie has a wide gut. Eddie's pecs are massive, his biceps are defined and peaked, he has rounded shoulders, and you can see his abs on his large core. This Thor has zero pecs, and absolutely zero muscular definition or sign of muscle. People keep comparing him to a power lifter in physique which is entirely false as most power lifters are relatively balanced, but also higher weight power lifters LOOK strong. This Thor just looks like a 'God' of eating competitions. Which is fine. He doesn't have to be jacked to the teeth, but for the love of god stop saying he looks 'strong' like this. With regards to Thor being an antagonist, that doesn't necessarily make him a villain. An antagonist is merely a foil for the protagonist, and God of Wars protagonist is Kratos. Kratos destroyed the world of Greek myth by slaying the gods, and in doing so unleashed chaos and destruction (for example, killing Poseidon caused the Earth's waters to rise and great storms to erupt unchecked). Thor could still fill his role as the protector of humanity and simply view Kratos as a threat.

I feel like something overlooked in this is that in the God of War game, Thor's described as a drunkard and is shown to be abusive towards his kids. Kratos kill both Magni and Modi in GoW. You kill one (can't recall which one was first), the other runs to Thor, Thor beats the shit out of him and tells him to go kill Kratos or not bother coming back. Then you kill the second son.
This Thor, by default wants Kratos dead, or got sent to fight him by Odin because Kratos is stirring things up WAY too much to be ignored.
This isn't "I'm here to protect humanity" Thor, this is "You killed my sons and relatives, you bastard!" Thor, or "I got sent here to kill you, so die already." Thor.
Either way, he's probably gonna treat Kratos more like the Jotuun after they swiped Mjolnir than anything else.
This game also isn't too kind to the Norse gods. Mostly in the sense that they are portrayed more like the Greek gods. Vain, sadistic, narcissistic, cocky.
While this is (probably) done so Kratos will look like a good guy in comparison (now that he's not a rage fueled monster with barely a concept of mercy or restraint). It shows that even if you wanted a "good" interpretation of the gods, you're not likely to find it here just due to their narrative roles.
This took less effort to pull of with the greek gods because they're (in simplified terms) assholes with superpowers and egos to match. It's not like the greeks pretended that wasn't the case when they wrote about them.

A bit late to the party, I know, but your final question about how GOW may depict Thor's personality got me thinking ...
I do believe the direction GOW will take is to make Thor a straight-up antagonist who plays against his primary roll of friend and defender of humanity, but I believe they'll do it in an unexpected way. Throughout the game we're inundated with story after story of how shockingly violent Thor seemingly is, but making him some mustache-twirling (or I guess in this case beard-twirling) villain or a snarling madman wouldn't be a satisfying or even sensible subversion of his supposed loyal and friendly demeanor.
I think what they're going to do is make him surprisingly cordial and eloquent. He'll speak calmly and clearly and present himself as unexpectedly professional (The "calm and reasonable person" line in the sequel trailer leads me to believe this). At the same time I think he'll be shown as someone who's shockingly good at putting on an act of being affable and quite charismatic.
Basically, he'll be a true clinically defined psychopath; someone who's amazing at pretending like he could be the friend and defender of humanity, but in reality he's cold and empty and perfectly capable of mass slaughter with no remorse. In my opinion, a sophisticated elitist psychopath pretending to be friendly to the "lesser folk" would be the perfect opposite of a warm down-to-earth working Joe who'd move the nine realms to protect the people.

    • @obesus787
      @obesus787 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thor in mythology is surprisingly reasonable, but has a tendency towards violence. He’s known for his short fuse, but this is slightly redeemed by him not holding grudges. When he visited giants in the myths, they wanted him to prove his worth by drinking a horn of mead without stopping, lifting a cat and wrestling an old lady. He failed at all and they mocked him relentlessly which pissed him off and he left, afterwards one of the giants admitted that they had used illusions to mask the real nature of things. The horn of mead was actually a literal ocean and he greatly reduced the level, the cat was the world serpent, and the old lady was literally time (or age, I forget) itself, the giants feared him, which is why they wanted him to prove himself in the first place. Thor accepted this and went on his merry way.
He’ll probably not be too clever, but clever enough to know his own limitations, and when it comes to combat he’ll probably be a lot more wise to Kratos’ nature than Balder.

The devs described their interpretations Thor as a hedonistic one which also fits with Thor in myth. I believe as a hedonistic individual would eat and drink tons. He would sit, laugh and have a rotten good time with people. This I think is one of the best interpretations of Thor not because of any historical significance (Although it helps) but because it’s something new, it’s something different and it will be fun to explore especially as an antagonistic character. Also I like that he’s one of the antagonists. Keep in mind this is a franchise who’s story subtext is that the gods weren’t really people worth worshiping. Just look at God of War I, II, III, and all the additional games. Most of the time the characters we would usually associate as the “Heros” such as Hercules, Theseus and so on were in line with the myths to a degree but twisted the story to frame them as being more toxic than heroic.

I feel what's actually important to this debate is "Does the design fit the portrayal the devs are trying to create?" and I'd argue it does. Marvel Thor does this too. Marvel Thor is supposed to be a shiny paragon hunk because he is supposed to be beautiful and admirable and mythically powerful. This isnt that Thor. GoW Thor is described as a brutal, angry, lout. As Mimir even says "A fat dobber." While I'm totally understanding of the strongman physique vs. hunk physique arguments I keep seeing surrounding this image, I think its beside the point. Even if you give up and say "Yeah, this Thor is just fat." I think it serves the purpose the devs are trying to achieve which is de-mystifying Thor as this hero god. GoW Thor is a fat, abusive, angry drunk. He's a genocidal maniac who given his worlds most powerful weapon used it to kill everyone he could get at and then put himself out of work. It wouldnt surprise me at all to find out that the reason Thor seems to be leaning more toward the obese in his concept art is that he sits on his ass drinking and eating in Asgard because he has nothing to do anymore. He killed everyone he was supposed to or allowed to and now Odin has had him in de facto retirement til Ragnarok.
