    I had the Capcom collection for the Saturn back in probably 1999. The local Electronics Boutique in Columbus OH started selling Japanese imports of Saturn games when the US Saturn games market dried up in 1998; however, the imports didn't do great since local Saturn owners would have to mod their machines, or buy a 4-in-1/5-in-1. Which meant I was able to buy the collection for 8 bucks (the same price I paid for the Saturn Konami MSX Antiques Collection :)). I did enjoy the games, though I tended to gravitate towards 1943 Kai for some reason.
    Nowadays if I want to scratch the shooter itch, I have Capcom Classics Collection for the PS2. It has all three.

      These quick conversions ordered by western publishers that just wanted to sell as fast as possible a game in a box with cool visuals is a terrible thing. Even when developers made a good job technically, it remained gameplay flaws as there was no time for testing before sending the program for masterisation.

      Capcom’s mid-late 90s fighting games (like Street Fighter Alpha/Zero or the early Marvel comic games) are supposed to be nearly arcade accurate on the Saturn compared to the PSX. I think some of them do require RAM expansion cartridges, but from what I’ve seen/heard about them, it’s totally worth it to get the best experience.

    It's probably just more apparent in the NES version because you can see a number ticking down- but the energy gradually goes down on the original arcade version also, sort of in an effort to simulate depleted fuel. That's why weapons can generally be cycled to a energy refill, to help with the ever-depleting fuel. Also many hidden items that will refill all fuel.

    • @solarflare9078
      @solarflare9078 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. It does decrease faster in the Famicom port though. I counted 3 seconds before it goes down by one in the arcade and 1 1/2-2 seconds in the Famicom port

    Great vid thanks Mark, I was playing this a couple of days ago on the Saturn and I find it to be really annoying with that health meter and the topping up of it being a huge distraction from the fun of shooting stuff, if it was 1 a hit kill system I might have liked it a bit more. I do remember enjoying a version at a seaside arcade which was fairly easy so I guess it had it's dip switches adjusted.

    This is my favorite overhead shooter ever, before the genre just became nonsense bullet hell garbage. Also on the graphics, going into an arcade in the 80s this game looked pretty good, it wasn't anything special, but I don't think it looked dated. Also I didn't realize this came out in 87, I always thought it came out earlier. Anyways the NES version of this game was great in that you had to do the power ups, that gave you a reason to keep playing it over and over. I also had it on the C64, which as a kid I always thought kind of sucked. In any case it was a HUGE upgrade over 1942 - from graphics to gameplay it was just dramatically better and nothing was more disappointing than going to an arcade or seeing machines at the store or Pizza Hut and seeing the 19 part, and then seeing it was 42. BOOOOO! Still upset at that.

      Not emulaion, but the PS1 Cap Gen ports all stuffed into 1 disc, with a few extra games actually running off emulation, like Forogtten Worlds, Section Z, and others. You can tell everything is Cap Gen PS1 by the Street Fighter ports having load times (which were shortened, but not removed), and the dark backgrounds on Ghouls N Ghosts.

  • @spacefractal
    @spacefractal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    still much better sound when compared to the crappy sound from 1942.
    btw the Atari ST speed looks wrong when compared to other videos (has not tested this game). so the speed seens to been emulator overclocked from a game that was not designed with that in mind, but should have been more closed to the speed from the Amiga version. So the speed can been a emulation issue? A least on the original Atari ST hardware. Some games might support Atari STe.

    • @meetoo594
      @meetoo594 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably running a 50hz game on a 60hz system. That causes issues like this due to the frame timing in the main game loop messing up. They could have coded it properly to detect what region machine it was running on but this is us gold/probe so not surprising they couldn't be bothered, or maybe it was never released outside Europe on the ST, who knows.

    For all its flaws, namely it had VERY POOR Colour and Bullets would get hidden in the background due to it being a more detailed Spectrum Port... Was a really good blast!
    1943 pales in comparrison... but I have to give credit where its due... The CPC Port looks OK given how much Probe tried to push it! I would have been happy had I got this as a child!

  • @nekononiaow
    @nekononiaow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ah, those early Atari/Amiga games where they managed to get even their lead machine (ST) port suck.
    The sea background pattern is eye destroying on those two ports.
    The Amstrad doesn't look too bad but why did these idiots put stuff on the side of the screen? That prevented them from using the CPC's hardware vertical scrolling capabilities which would have allowed the game to run faster.
    Great way to give oneself more work and make the game worse at the same time... Can't expect too much of Probe after all.

    I have to agree with your opinion of this game in general. It is a very polished game that plays well, but it is not exciting. I never felt like a powerful badass while playing it. Now fast-forward to the game 19XX, which in my opinion is one of the greatest vertical shmups ever made. You feel like a TOTAL badass while playing that game. I would donate a kidney if Capcom would make a modern sequel to that game specifically, with its lock-on feature preserved or even expanded. 19XX also sounds incredible, particularly the jungle stage 3.

    Yeeeah, gonna have to disagree with you on the arcade music. It sounds much better than the average arcade game of 1987 (like R-Type, which, as much as I like it, has some piercing leads, Double Dragon, Contra, which sounds even more thin imo, etc). Even more so impressive too once you consider this game used the YM2203 chips over the much more powerful YM2151 chip that those games listed used.

  • @shotgunl

    I quite like the 1942 series, though 19XX is my favorite. I think the one word to describe 1943 is "improved". 1943 is a great improvement over 1942 in the arcade as well as the NES port. Luckily, Micronics gets kicked to the curb for the Famicom, and Capcom puts in a good showing themselves. I do definitely prefer 1943 改 on the PC-Engine, but 1943 is still a nice, fun shooter on the NES and blows away the 1942 port. Sadly, though those of us with Nintendo's console got a well-made port, it seems the 8-bit micro owners got shafted with the UK equivalent of Micronics: Probe. Now, I do like some of Probe's games (Forsaken, some-but-not-all of their Mortal Kombat ports, etc), but we all know that half of the time they produced some of the janky-est playing ports around.

    At the start of the C64 version, the scrolling goes jerky when the plane loops the loop! Is that a problem with the emulator, or does it happen on a real C64?

    • @overkill1473
      @overkill1473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Arcade version has a resolution of 256 x 224. Capcom did not redraw the graphical assets for Generation 1. However the Playstation version uses a nasty VDP stretch, which messes the controls up. If you want a full screen Tate mode on Saturn: TV Service Mode -> + H Stretch.

    Can anyone tell me why Amiga games, the ones that use MOD sampler files for audio, have to hard pan the sound effects along with the audio? Was that the only way to make mod files, either all 4 channels were l/r or mono, but both was somehow impossible?

    • @meetoo594
      @meetoo594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are only 2 channels per speaker, so to get stereo sound fx they would have to sacrifice 1 channel from each side and thus only have 1 per side for music, which would sound dreadful. There were ways to get more perceived channels out of the sound chip by downmixing or rapidly cycling samples at the expense of audio quality and cpu load but im not aware of any games using this.

    To put the lamentable Amiga version into perspective, it was an ST port, doesnt use Amiga hardware at all, and was released as a budget title, I.e. they were never putting any effort into it. You only have to look at quality like Hybris released at the same time to know the Amiga could have handled 1943 with ease.
