Why I Don't Have Impostor Syndrome (And Why You Shouldn't Either)

  • Impostor Syndrome (the feeling of doubting your abilities or thinking that you're a fraud) is extremely common in tech and software engineering. At a company like Google, it's especially prevalent. In this video, I share 5 techniques on how to overcome impostor syndrome as a software engineer (though this advice applies to other fields as well).

    1. Actively acknowledge your strengths.
    2. Don't let one/ few negative comments/ feedback overpower the lion's share positive.
    3. Find your weakness and make sure you grind on them till you feel that you've become a master in it.
    4. Only compare yourself with those at your level and not with someone who's more professional/ overly qualified
    5. Trust the process- understand that the system is correct and come out of your incorrect mindset.
In a nutshell, always be a leaner. An open and broad mindset along with a great deal of effort will give you the clarity to be the best of who you are. Thank you for this video! I've an interview coming up soon :)))

@@clem I had a thought. Since imposter syndrome is very common in tech companies, wouldn't it be great for them to address it in onboarding? I wish I had something like this video, when I was doing my internship.
The thought is: This video should be used by tech companies for their "onboarding"/"training" as optional content. Imposter syndrome is common, but I have never seen it addressed by a company. Yes, a company hired you therefore we think you are worthy and all, but sometimes thats not enough. It would be very impactful and a benefit to the company if impostor syndrome was rooted out from the get go. If you think it could be useful, then why not pitch it at facebook and who knows, it might catch on and change things in the industry for the better.

As I have a degree in science, I am not familiar with all those technical terms such as SQL, html, etc. I know eventually I would have to do my own research but do you think you could possibly comment or make a video on a comprehensive list of things a self-studying person should master to get hired? I have the will to study hard, just have no idea what to do as my time is limited(within 8months or so). I would really appreciate your advice. It can change my life.

it's generally accepted within the field that it takes 10 positive experiences to make up for 1 positive.
also handling negative effects is a survival mechanic and if we do not have the ability to stop the negative we tend to fall back to "avoidance" and simply pull away.
I find that everyone sucks majorly even at the Very highest level people don't have a fucking clue what they are doing and the entire idea of their expertise comes from them lying about how amazing they are, hyperbolic, which properly comes from many fields being infested with people being hired on lies, which means everyone needs to lie or there is a lying candidate which is just "better"...
we are seeing the breaking point currently and at least in my country we start seeing hirings written in terms of "joking/pissing on the entire: want new developer with 10 years experience 7 languages, perfect expertise, ready to work overtime for free, and can call superman in with mindcontrol; ow and the person needs to work for Half the salary etc".
there is a ton of other reasons etc. but it all comes back to "we all majorly suck at our jobs, as we are all hired in jobs that are pushing our limits of competence; most are" and therefore we should learn to be ok with sucking at things, and ok with others knowing.
so that we can improve and stop pushing each other to stress breakdowns, depression etc. all on lies and all only benefitting the extreme few at the top taking everyone else resources and hoping everyone is too stressed from running too fast to make the resources, to actually realise they are killing themselves all for a very few evil people at the top.
taking care of peoples health is far more important than having yet another disgusting capitalist pushing everyone from the top while they are stealing all the resources doing next to nothing for the amount they are taking.

Honestly I unconsciously get imposter syndrome too when non-cs people ask me a random "not cs related question" and throws the line "You're in cs you should know this", and it automatically makes me feel bad about it when it shouldnt
