Never feed hedgehogs mealworms. It thins their bones and cripples them, eventually killing them.
@@BetrayedAndAmused really that’s so crazy I’m about to get one in a week and every informational video that I’ve watched has said that mealworms are in they’re everyday diet. Thank you for letting me know. Can they have live mealworms or no mealworms at all?
Hiya, mealworms have virtually no calcium and high phosphorous levels. This level is very bad for them. Whether live or dried, mealworms are a death sentence to hedgehogs. Dried kitten biscuits (a brand where meat like chicken or turkey is the first ingredient listed) is ideal for them. :)

They never eat mealworms in the wild and shouldn’t be fed them as they will kill.

Yes, unfortunately mealworms are widely used in ‚wild hedgehog‘ food, which is unregulated. It‘s a terrible idea and, ultimately, fatal for hedgehogs. Tell hedgehog owners to check out Hedgehog Cabin on here and Twitter. They give excellent advice. Kitten biscuits are best to feed them.

The wild hedgehogs here in Ireland have a diet mainly consisting of earth worms, snails and their favourite is slugs. I am feeding two in my back garden every night with some cat kibble now in the autumn months to ensure their survival of winter hibernation.

Hedgehogs will only eat slugs and snails if they are starving, and can cause lungworm.

Seeing that baby mouse broke my heart ❤️😭 I'll stick to feeding my hedgehog boiled eggs and meal worms. When I was younger, we went on a school trip to a zoo and they were feeding the otters... Feeding the otters with day old chicks, right in front of us little kids 😶

Stop feeding your hedgehog mealworms! This will cripple and eventually kill him.

There are high levels of phosphorous and low levels of calcium in mealworms, which eventually causes a degenerative bone disease, and the bones break, eventually killing the hedgehog.

What is primal raw? Was it the meaty bits in the bowl? or the kibble mixed with it? And which primal raw do you use? Can you reply back with a link?
Primal Raw is a brand of raw pet food that makes pre-made grinds for raw-feeding.

this helped lots my albino hedgehog has not been eating her kibble and i do give her worms but they are freeze dryed she doesnt drink lots of water even though i have 2 water bottles her original owner was doing great with her but just months after i got her she was being weird her original owner did the same things im doing but without a heat lamp i had to get her a heat lamp without a light because she is kinnda sesodive to light giving that shes albino and all albinos are blind im very worred about her any ideas tell me please she is around 3-4

A little bit of fruit is fine! Can you find wax worms or dubia roaches?

Any freeze dried raw for kitties should be fine, just look at the fat % and make sure its not too high! I love ziwi peak, primal is good too.

I have had hogs for around 5 years now and I have bred them. They must have have lots of variety...Mario's are their favourite, mealworm ( live) waxworks sparingly as they are fattening. Kibble helps keep teeth clean and strengthens gums. No fruit ...maggots are good and crickets with one leg removed for easy capture. Clean water every day. Sprinkle all live with calcium! Very important for their bone structure. And of course handle them lots while checking nails eyes and signs of ill health 😊

NO!! Mealworms cause hedgehogs bones to thin and break. Eventually killing them. SUCH bad advice on this video.

No, you can’t say that just because you want to feed it to them. Mealworms will kill hedgehogs. Please look up @HedgehogCabin on here and Twitter. They know what they’re talking about.

Can I feed ziwi peak for a hedgehog
I love Ziwi but it's a bit high in fat. If you can find a recipe 20% or under it would be fine, or mixing it with a lower fat food would be fine as well and would balance it out.

@@koda4316 you could cut the mix with Fromm cat food just to bring the fat down. You could also feed Ziwi canned as well if your hedgehog will eat it. If you want to actually feed raw, you can get a premade raw like Answers or Primal for cats. I would supply a high quality kibble in there as well until you know your hedgie is eating the raw mostly and doing well on it.
My hedgehog doesn't like kibble she likes cat food 😭
Hedgehogs can only eat live insects
Frozen insects would make them sick
And contrary to populat belief, hedgehogs normally don't eat chili dogs!

I mean, I understand that you think insects are necessary, but cat food? Why would you kill chickens, lambs, fish, cows etc. only for one single animal? Why kill one animal to feed the other? I could bear the moral conflict of hurting insects, but larger organisms ??? That's just hypocritical .
Sorry but how are you not being hypocritical now? You find these animals worthy of life but not bugs? They are all living creatures. The thing is, I want to give my animals the food that is biologically appropriate for them. Hedgehogs are insectivores. However, hedgehogs eat meat as well. I wish I didn't have to feed him kibble because feeding him raw would be much more biologically appropriate, but he is picky and tends to only care for the kibble.
@@PawsofPrey I know that putting the bugs worth under bigger animals is also speciesism but it' at least to 100% necessary, while feeding other animals is not. :) I'm sorry, that my writing sounded angry or wanting to offend, that's the problem on the internet, you don't have intonation and face movement to show your mood :,) I just wanted to point out something really important like being aware that one animal has not more worth than others.
@@hannahlandesberger9256 no worries, it is silly that things can sound a different way over the internet if you don't add faces lol. I do understand what you mean though. But hedgehogs require more nutrients that not only bugs provide unless you give a very wide range of variety. Unfortunately since my hedgehog is picky I do need to offer him kibble so he gets enough nutrients.
