    Another TH-cam ( can't remember who) stores used blades in a jar until they go to the doctors and then dispose of them in the sharps bin. Seems the safest option

      Giselle Peralta im seeing the sharps concern here alot, my razor pack container has a slot on it's flipside especially for rendering them harmless before and the pack is used up and to dispose of in. maybe this is not universal to all brands' double edged razor packs but in case ppl are like me and are missing its exisence for ages (its uber inconspicuous), i thought id share...

      You can buy recyclable used safety razor banks. Cost about $10 and hold 300 blades. When full throw the whole lot in recycling.

    In the olden days there was a slot in the back of the medicine cabinet for used blades that went directly into the wall. Not too sure how safe that was, especially if someone decided to remodel the bathroom.

    I once owned a Rolls Razor. It had a stone on the inside of the case, which you could sharpen the blade with when you put it away. It lasted for years and it had the advantage of not needing a new blade. It's a shame they don't still make them.

    • @theminimalistninja

      Wow, that sounds amazing! I am sure you could still hunt one down but bet it would be a bit tricky :/

      John, indeed. You can still find Rolls Razors at Ebay, but the problem is to make sure they are in good condition. I got one in a flea market for a few dollars and it's in amazing condition.

    I been using mine for about a year, and I gave one to my boyfriend this christmas, he was a little bit afraid of cutting his face at first but now he is loving it, he says it´s a loooot better than a disposable razor, even the expensive ones.

      It's a bit late, but does your man use shaving soap instead of foam cans?Bc soap gives the perfect slide of the razor on the wet skin, while foams are just "dry". He'll fall in love with all those scented shaving soaps in the market and their effect on shaving routine.

    What i like about them is theyre so easy to clean and you dont have to leave it with lots of tiny hair bits between the blades like with cartridge razors

    • @theminimalistninja

      Totally! I haven't even thought about that! They are so easy to clean! The best part? They don't ever smell. My old cartridge razor always used to smell like shi*!!

    After reading several comments, under no circumstance should used blades be composted, recycled or thrown in the waste. The responsible method is using a sharps container, which can be purchased at a local grocer or pharmacy. Each container comes with manufacturers return instructions for proper and safe disposal.

    The blades _absolutely should not_ be put in recycling unless you are completely certain it is okay to do so in your area. Every jurisdiction I know about will at the very least say that they should be put in regular trash so it is sent to a landfill. In some jurisdictions, it is even _illegal_ to put them in recycling because of the risk to the workers sorting the material at the recycling facility. (Just think about the things that could happen to them if they got cut. All sorts of pathogens could be exposed to their bloodstream. Worst case scenario they could die (I wish that was hyperbole).
    They're made of recyclable material, yes, but they cannot be recycled. (That said, the waste compared to any disposable cartridge is absolutely minuscule.)

    • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's, of course, vital to check with one's recycling facility first on the appropriate steps that need to be taken to recycle or dispose of the blades :) Most recycling facilities have heaps of information about it on their website and when in doubt, they can always be called or emailed :)

      You should never throw razorblades, scalpels, hypodermic needles, etc away unprotected. The classical way is to use some sort of solid plastic container to collect them and seal the container with tape before throwing them out (when the container is full). It is much safer for everybody.
      You can use things like these stiffer plastic boxes where meat salad or other bound salads, or sometimes antipasti are sold in. A single one can hold a good amount of used razorblades.

      Albatross brand blades have a take back program where you can send all used double edge safety blades regardless of brand.
      here's some info from albatross: "You can store and ship your blades in a variety of containers, such as used pill bottles, a used soup can duct taped on one end, or by using a heavy weight internal envelope inserted into another envelope as is our standard procedure."
      The address is:
      Albatross Designs
      PO Box 2254
      Berkeley, CA 94702
      Just thought i would share.

    A nice razor which is adjustable is the Murkur Progress 510, it has a long handle and I shave two passes on my face( I am a man) . You can change the setting eg: from 3 to 2 to clean up the missed hairs and prevent cuts and razor burn. A little baby oil can be used as a preshave. Bodyshop shaving soap is perfect and lathers very easily. Hope it helps.

      As for me, I cut myself once really badly, I was going too fast, but haven't cut myself since. I love it for pubic hair - it makes for a really clean shave and once you are into the swing of things you can go faster without cutting yourself. hope that helps! would love to hear other people's experiences as well :)

      well as a gent lol i do use safety razor for the private area, but my reccomendation would be one that is not aggressive and actual shaving cream like praraso or another cream.
      If you are looking for a recommendation, mine would be the wilkonson sword safety razor which can be purchased from amazon for under $10 CAD. Its cheap but is very forgiving for cuts and honestly a decent razor overall. I have more expensive ones but this plastic and metal razor is the most forgiving i own, so i use it mainly for my super sensitive areas (see link if you're interested).

      Learn how to use it on other parts of the body first (holding it at the right angle, you need very little pressure etc) and then just take your time. Build into it even, some parts down there are easier than others so build your confidence on those parts first.

      I suggest stretching the skin while shaving, shaving your knees while they are outstretched straight, make smooth, short strokes, and always use lather and conditioner while shaving. If you do these things, even the boniest of knees can be shaven. If all else fails though, no shame in waxing them.

    • @amwehr86
      @amwehr86 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can give it a whirl. I shave with my knees bent because it makes the skin taut.

    Something to note for all the ladies that might be interested in getting a safety razor: Pretty much all of the safety razors specifically marketed to women are rebranded private label manufactured razors, so chances are you can find the exact same razor for a lot cheaper if you're okay with it not having pastel coloured paint on it. (Look at Weishi, Baili, DS Cosmetics etc.) The Merkur 23C used in this vid is just a plain jane honest product, though.
    Most razors are also cast from Zamak (zinc-copper alloy) that has been chrome plated. It's a decent material and will last long if you look after it, but it can fracture or chip if dropped or knocked, since cast metals are brittle like glass.
    The most common breakage you'll see is the top cap's threaded post shearing clean off/having it stay behind in the handle's threads after being dropped from standing height or mishandled during shipping. Due to being cast, they can't be repaired in any way. You could replate a razor after having lost its chrome, though.
    In my opinion, the most underrated (and mostly unknown to women wanting to get into using a safety razor) product range out there would be Razorock's line of 100% stainless steel safety razors. (Sold on their ItalianBarber website) They cost only slightly more (around $60 to $70) than most of the razors made of Zamak and they have none of their weaknesses. Definitely the best value for money in the wet shaving market. If you already have a razor, don't sweat it, but if you're still looking to buy one, be sure to check them out. You'd like their "super knurl" handle.
    Also, one piece of advice: Wet shave. Canned foam is "dry" and filled with air that makes the experience uneven and its application doesn't prep your hair. Get some sort of brush and a shaving soap that actually lathers well. If you want vegan, PAA's CK6 formula is explosive and synthetic/horse hair brushes don't involve utilizing something from dead animals.

    • @theminimalistninja

      This is dependent on where you live I am afraid and what you've got available around you. I choose a Merkur 23 C long handle razor and love it. Not really - it's just important to take it slow. I prefer using short strokes and a lot of them over long strokes. That's a personal preference though.

I think maybe I need to practice the proper technique, but I've followed every tip I've read about and I'm still getting knicked and don't get a very close shave compared to other razors.

    • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How often you'll need to change the blade is hugely dependent on how often you shave, how long you shave for (as in duration) and which areas you shave. What do you use to shave with? Have you tried switching it up? :)

    *I use both a DE Safety Razor & a Multi-Blade Disposable.*
    One for the bulk, the other for the stubble. Fast, Easy-To-Clean, Smooth Shaving is the outcome.

    I have considered switching to a safety razor to both save money and reduce waste. But I was wondering, how likely are you to cut yourself with a safety razor versus a conventional one? Are there certain ways you have to hold it and move it to prevent cuts?

    • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Grace! I would say that you are just as likely to cut yourself with a safety razor IF you are new and not used to it. Use it like any other razor, take it slow and get a feel for it. It's a little different, a lot heavier and may take a little to get used to. Now that I've gotten used to it I cut myself a lot less compared to the conventional one and the shave is a lot smoother! :)

    Excellent video! I must admit, I've seen your videos pop up in my recommended (related to minimalism), but I hadn't watched one yet. I just looked up, "shaving with a safety razor," and your video was the first to pop up with a female (I didn't want to shave facial hair :P), so I clicked and, well, you have a new subscriber! • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is totally dependent on you, I found it fairly easy! :) There are ones with short handles, long handles, single edge & double edge. Again, totally dependent on personal preference and how you like to use yours. There is lots of info on that online that may help you pick the right one! :) Yessss, whatever works with your current one will most likely also work with a safety razor :) Hope that helps! :)

      What safety razor (and blades) did you use? (You facial hair growth may have a significant part in this matter.) What expectations are you having? What is the 'single blade'? A straight razor? There is more of a learning curve to that, plus you have to be dedicated to stropping and honing the blade, but it gives a great shave -- provided you respect it. If you're referring to a straight razor, maybe consider a Feather 'Artist Club SS Razor' (folding) or 'Artist Club SS Japanese Razor' (non-folding, kamisori-style), which both use Artist Club razor blades (which are stiffer than DE blades) and are easier to maintain. Perhaps not as quick as using a cartridge or electric razor, but once you learn how to use a safety, straight or Artist Club style razor it will give a better shave.

    In case you are not aware there is a HUGE wet shaving( meaning to use Traditional and/or Vintage shaving tools, techniques and methods ) represented on TH-cam and you might benefit by watching some of the videos.
    This said, I'd like to offer you a suggestion. DE shaving is great without a doubt and you did well pointing this out. However, I think you might enjoy enlarging your experience. I suggest checking out Ebay and researching Schick Injector Razors. They are a Single Edge safety razor. Specifically, look for a "G-Type Bakelite Schick Injector" model. They are easily found and very inexpensive but the shave you receive from them is incredible. The reason I am suggesting a "Injector Blade" model is based on your experience of using a DE blade for several months. A SE blade is thicker and more rigid than a DE blade. And if a DE can last months then theoretically a SE blade might last a year or more. Injector blades come in a 7 blade dispenser. You should watch how the dispensing device works to understand better.
    Anyway, I enjoyed learning about your experience and opinions on the matter and hope this helps you expand a bit. ;)

      That's exactly why I made this video - I couldn't find that much info on it and figured it's time to talk about it :) That's a sign, haha! The razor that I have has a longer handle which is great for shaving legs and armpits. @The Minimalist Ninja. If you want to try something new and want fat hefty long razor with adjustable and long handle. Try this The Viking Emperor series( Fat chrome), (Fat Angustus) version good one! After trying this safety razor for 7 years, The viking emperor meji its the lastest version 2020 but its shorter handle so I don't recommended that. Just go for Viking Emperor Fat Chrome or Fat Angustus version etc.
    With, shaving soap/cream(Refillable) preshave(Refillable) and aftershave with this razor you prob last long time 6 months- 1 year. Ofc razor last lifetime etc

      I am sure they'd appreciate the gift! It may take a bit of getting used to, as it's quite different from normal razors, but it's amazing once you've got it figured out! :)

    For any beginners; merkur, and Edwin Jagger, make good razors and people are now making 3D printed razors which have gotten good reviews such as these: www.shapeways.com/shops/clockandflame?li=pb
    If you want to safely dispose of the used blades you can use empty prescription medication bottles or failing that, a water bottle with a small slit cut into the side.

    I started shaving with a safety razor about four months ago and love it. My daughters are just getting into shaving their legs so I was hoping to encourage them to use safety razors if they were comfortable with them. I just came across a Merkur 23C that I'm about to buy and was wondering how it would be for women to use so your video was perfect. Thank You!! 😊👍

    was shaving your private areas easy? I use disposable ones right now but I really want to go more green I'm just horrified that I'll cut myself down there since I'm already clumsy as it is right now 😂

    • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut myself once really badly because I was going way to fast, but haven't cut myself since. YES, it's not difficult, you just gotta go slowly and make sure to soap it up! I was terrified at first, I don't shave often these days, but when I do it's smooth - no cuts! It will take some time getting used to, but the shave is incredible and if you go slowly in the beginning you are not going to cut yourself!! :)

    Thank you for sharing this video , it is very informative. Is the long handle or the shorter hand better options for particular areas and where may they be. I am seriouly considering a safety razor , namely because as you have mentioned, the others are so very expensive. Thanking you in advance for a reply. Best regards.

      I've only ever had a long handle one and I am therefore unable to compare the two. I've read that the shorter one works better for shaving ones face and the longer one is better for places that are trickier to reach or further away such as legs! :) It's really all down to personal preference though, I picked a long handle one because the only area I shave on a regular basis are my armpits and the length works great for this area! :)

      It is preference. My dad likes a longer handle (4+ inches), I prefer a medium size (~3.75 inches), many TH-cam's prefer short (3-3.5 inches).
      People say the shorter handles are more maneuverable and I tend to agree. However, the medium-long handles feel better in my hand and imo feel more balanced ie not top heavy. Plus, if I need it to be more maneuverable, I'll just choke up on the handle and hold the razor closer to the head.
      If you buy a 3 piece razor, you can buy different sized handles and swap them out to suit your needs

    My main concern is that I want to shave my inner thighs, but that’s where your femoral artery is. Putting such a sharp blade anywhere near such a vital area frightens me honestly...

      It's really not that big of a deal. You'd get used to it in no time. Safety razors are actually saver, because of that. They make for a more precise shave, the blades are sharper, and you hardly need to use any pressure to get it done :)

    When you put shaving cream in your private area, does it burn? Does it turn you on when you use the brush the lather the shaving soap around your private area? Can you post a picture of your shaved private area?

    • @theminimalistninja
      @theminimalistninja  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use shaving cream I am afraid as it usually contains horrific ingredients :S I use natural soap only and know what goes into a good soap as I've made my own in the past :)

    First of all: Thank you for sharing you experience and being honest, I personally think that the vid was educational ^^
    I know this may sound sick, but are there any vids on techniques to shave you ladyparts? I am from germany and want to switch to the safety razor in love to the enviroment. But I am admittedly scared to use it 'down there' like in between the labias and the edges because the hair there annoys me the most and i really dont wanna cut myself there since I am very very sensitive to pain ;_;

      I think there are forums that you can check out. Just google away and I am sure you'll find something. I currently don't shave my vag on a regular, but have done so in the past and have never had any (major) issues with this razor! :)

    You must be mad to use a DE razor without proper shaving cream or soap on your armpit or anywhere else. You can pick up some old spice, proraso for dirt cheap and they can last months.

    I just bought one, they look daunting at first, but I have yet to cut myself, my electric on the other hand managed to on several occasions. No moving parts is how I like it.
