      A jam is the exact place to make your first game! It would be way too hard to start with a long-form project. I am brand new to all of this, and I did the Godot Wild Jam a couple of weeks ago, and made my first ever game. To couple that, I only had tutorial experience in Unity, so not only was I learning how to make a game, but I was also learning a brand new engine. Seriously, it was so rewarding, and now that the game is made, I can look back on all the lessons and apply it to something long-form, rather than that "analysis paralysis" that one might get from starting a daunting project with no bounds. A time limit is a fantastic motivator.

With that new bit of knowledge I been applying it for my main game and has showed some interesting results. I can’t wait to participate in more jams in the near future!

    Thanks for posting this Adam. I was not planning on doing game jams any time soon; I'm making the transition from RPG Maker to Unity, and I only know how to do a few things, but you made me determined to make Something this weekend. I'm glad I did; I gained such a better grasp of what will go into making a Unity project. I'm sure that when I learn things now it will be at a deeper level, and not so passive, because I've made something and had to rely on myself to launch a whole (if small) game.

    This rings true with normal software development too. Ideally you want to do develop anything using an "agile" method. Starting with the most basic functional version of your product, then iterating over that adding a feature, the repeat. That way when you hit a deadline your have something that hits 80% or 60% or 25% of what you wanted but that's better than 0%
    Were as many project/ developers end up doing a "waterfall" approach, which is get it all done in one go. Which can seem tempting but its alot harder to see where your going wrong when you do it all in one go & if you miss your deadline you basically have nothing to show for it other than a pile of assets

    Hey Adam. Love your work, top tier pixel art content. Don't know if you will read this, but help me out.
    I would love to have a channel about game dev, but I'm brazilian. Should I do my videos in portuguese with english subtitles or do them in english with portuguese subtitles? I'm thinking about this because the english speaking market is way more evolved on this niche and staying on my native language might limit the reach of the channel.

    • @AdamCYounis
      @AdamCYounis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Brazilian Portuguese has a pretty big audience, so I'm sure you'll be able to grow a significant audience with just BR. But, for sure, the English speaking world is bigger. If you can communicate well enough using English, I think it would be worth it in the long run.

    So I'm an artist that wants to get into programming so I can do a game jam but I'm a little confused. Are you all really memorizing all of that code and just writing it all from memory or are you looming it up and copying and pasting code? Is that even allowed in a game jam? Also are their time constraints beyond 48 hours? Like could I stay awake and be working for the full 48 hours or is it more of a 9-5 thing?

    • @reidschott5517

    Counterpoints:
    * Something that you can do in a weekend isn't worth its space on a resume unless you need something to pad your resume out
    * I agree with you that if the choice is between playing games all weekend vs doing a game jam, the game jam is a great choice
    * Yes, you do get rapid feedback from a game jam, but if the design decisions in a jam game are inconsequential since the game has to be so small, you aren't getting valuable feedback
    * I agree with you that if you're really starting out then a game jam may have some value, especially if it's the thing that inspires you to actually work on a game. I see comments from other people who say things like "I'll do a game jam once I learn how to make games" and to those people I say "Stop making excuses and do the game jam. You'll learn something."
    * Overall my point is mostly: I have the perspective of someone who has more ideas than time to implement, so a game jam is just going to get in the way of progress towards something I'd actually like to be doing. I don't think I'd get any value from making a simple game. I personally don't value "completion" because I don't see completion of a simple game as any more of an accomplishment than completion of a system or meaningful portion of a more complex game.

    • @AdamCYounis
      @AdamCYounis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless you're just making your games just for you, the test of your systems / games will always come down to whether other people think your game is fun or good. And getting regular exposure to how players receive your design choices will give you invaluable insight into where your effort needs to go. If you're just engineering physics or lighting, no problem. But if you're designing player facing stuff you can't really do that efficiently in a bubble without exposure to feedback.
      So even if the jams themselves aren't going into your resume, the experience from jams will make the bigger resume pieces much better.

    Personally I don't appreciate the mentality that comes with Game Jams. You can learn a lot more by limiting what you focus on in a similar fashion (like a movement system, combat mechanic, story interaction) Of course this isn't as satisfying as making an entire game(for most people). If competition isn't what motivates you then this will most likely yield better results.
