I really like the calm way you talk through topics with just enough details to keep it extremely interesting. These video's fly by :)

A thought I had when you were talking about putting character animation first is that many indie developers have a tendency to think of art/animation/sound as being "polish", or secondary elements. But in fact, as they relate to game feel or "juice", they're not "polish" at all, they're core elements of many genres. How it feels to execute the gameplay loop is so driven by what kind of feedback the player is receiving, and that feedback is largely transmitted through the art and sound design. And in many, if not most, modern genres, making the core gameplay loop feel good is critical to the overall gameplay experience being a positive one.
So I think that whether it's a game jam or a rapid prototype, it's valuable to ask yourself, "How much does this art or sound asset affect how it feels to play the game?" And if the answer is "A lot", as in the case with a player animation, that may be an important thing to implement early on in the process and to put some real time into. If the answer is "not very much, it's mainly to enhance the mood" maybe you can put it on the back burner, like you did with the background art, Adam.
Just some thoughts I had watching through the video! Loved playing through Trauma and it was fascinating to hear you summarize your process, since I mostly wasn't paying good attention during the livestream. Congrats on the top 10 finish!

This is golden insight and a major takeaway I also had from this excellent video. After several self-taught years of prototypes and one shipped commercial game, I'm just now catching up to this realization myself. Clear communication is critical to the core experience and part of how we communicate is through feeling. My working theory at this time is to juice all core elements early.

Your work is very inspiring. It's impressive to see a person who has honed multiple skills over several years apply those skills in a confident way. You aren't leaving your success to chance you're putting in the work every day. So thanks for that

Congratulations on top 10! You totally deserve it. Very much appreciate the time you took for that and the time you took to rate games. It all helps! Also definitely would love to learn more about your workflow for music!

I really love the basic idea and concept you had for this game. I don't expect you to make anything more out of it but I still want to - mostly for myself - write down some ideas it gave me.
I like how every time you confront a trauma, it does something to the player character, mostly, regardless of additional input. You can use those "memories" together, each one on it's own, but it in the end you don't have much precise control. So I was thinking further along in the therapy - for harder puzzles - you could learn "techniques" in order to better deal with past and new trauma: Mechanic wise, you'd collect such technique cards that give you abilities similar to the trauma cards, but with more agency. Something like "accepting your own flaws" could make you jump into the air but you could control how high or low you jump. "Asking for or accepting help" could move you horizontally; left OR right. Or you could even keep all the trauma cards after a certain point. As to show that you have learned to confront and deal with them on your own. Independent of someone guiding you into confronting them at a specific point. The puzzles might become too complex or convoluted at that point, though.
Anyway, just some ideas that I got from your beautiful game. Thank you very very much for the inspiration this gave me and I wish you all the best for your work on Insignia. I already love the demo :)

19:17 I love this! I would love to know how to practice making Music and SFX properly. My best songs can take an entire week to complete, but you do it really fast. I use your planning methods for art/animation too which makes it fun.

How can one single person excel at such vastly varying tasks in such short amount of time, this is truely inspiring to see, good for you! Congratulations on the outcome of the jam, which is well deserved. Keep up the great work! Best wishes from Germany

    Congrats on the ranking.
It's kind of fun and interesting to see behind the scene.
I start drawing just a week ago and slowly catching up on your vids.
I was around last year's Ludum Dare video yesterday too, what a coincidence.
PS. I have to sit a few meters more from the screen because of the constant very close-up shot.
Somehow this year's social distancing makes me uncomfortable.

I'm a bit late to this but Adam I just played through Trauma and its very good for the time you had. The story is very good it hit me in the feels lol and I love the moving around of the cards its such a cool and fun idea. That said I love your art style and even though it is present in the game I did miss your beautiful backgrounds. :) I know you didn't have much time but its still such a great game and the character is so cute. lol Peace and One Love friend.

Great job with Ludum dare Adam.
You seem a tiny bit out of focus in the DSLR recording. Also some slightly softer and brighter colour grading would look nice :)

    • @AdamCYounis
      @AdamCYounis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm still working out the kinks of trying to record through the HDMI out feed rather than saving a video to memory. I was in focus, but the quality loss between the HDMI out, OBS, Resolve and TH-cam resulted in something not so great.
I think there's potential with the format, but I may have to fork out some extra cash for lighting / a better camera (this one is a canon 650D that doesn't do 1080p out from the preview)

No need to watch the video.. here is how he made a top ten ludum dare game... u only need a few things.. its real simple... 1. A BIG TH-cam AUDIENCE.. you need this for people to play and rate your game so it gets noticed more... got one of them lying around at the back of ur cupboard??? good.. use that one... 2. have 5 or so years of pixel art and more of general art practice... 3.. enjoy your top ten game.. You are welcome.
