I'm a beginner at guitar (started 3 weeks ago but I'm a good ukulele player) and I was having so much trouble with the spider walk. My teacher expected me to get this perfectly in 2 weeks and I felt like I was disappointing him. I watched like thousands of videos for help but this was the video that helped out me out and brought some significant progress in me. I read the comments under this and turns out that you passed away a couple of years ago. I would just like to thank you for all the help and guidance; you've helped so many people across the globe. Rest in peace ❤ Love from India
wow... sorry to hear about her passing. I just found these videos today. I'm so glad I did. It feels strange getting help on youtube from a deceased person though. Sorry for your loss to all that loved her. May she rest in peace and may God bless her for her work.
I have been watching a lot of guitar playing lately. It looks like a lot of people suffer from "Fly Away" I just began my lessons, and my fingers act like they have a mind of their own. I will practice keeping my fingers close to the guitar. I think this video will help me on my way to learning the best way to play a guitar. Thank you
It takes dedication to become a great player, but insight to help others do the same. Not many people know that stuff like this is involved during the learning phase, as opposed to just playing songs all day. Thanks a bunch Susan!! :P
Thanks Susan, very informative and simple enough even for a beginner like me.Keep posting your lessons please, you are opening the flood gate of learning to play guitar and a tremendous help to everyone.
Wow Susan I wish you were my teacher this is the BEST explanation on how to correctly do the spider exercise! I am surprised that none of the guitar lesson books even mention these things?
great lesson! it would b even better if u showed the view looking down over the fretboard. i tried this last night & it is tough! gonna keep on working on it. thanx for sharing this w/us.
I agree in fact this is one of the first things my guitar teacher gave me to work on as a new student. So helpful especially when learning chords and building finger skill, dexterity and strength.
wow cool exercise. My pinky sure does like to fly away. I knew i had a problem with the pinky just didn't notice how bad. Nor did I realize how to fix it. LOL Thanks for sharing
Is there a set pattern when you're walking up the fretboard (i.e. skip every other string and alternate fingers 1, 3, 2, 4 - or...every other note of a pentatonic scale)...or are you simply playing random notes?
Sorry to hear she passed as I wanted to tell her that her fingers are NOT short.!! I just started and even on the high E where she begins and says to keep Your knuckles parallel....RIGHT!! I hope that this is a 'comes with time and practice thing!'. My fingers are not super short ,but I have no clue how guitarists do this stuff? I won't give up anyone else? same problems? Any good advice?
I don't understand what will this video help me accomplish? I got that it will help me control my fingers but would it improve my soloing skills ? ....thanks for the video I really like it! :)
3:52 - 4:09 Notes played: F (1st fret 1st string, index finger) C# (2nd fret 2nd string, long finger) G# (1st fret 3rd string, index finger) F (3rd fret 4th string, ring finger) B (4th fret, 3rd string, pinky) C (3rd fret, 5th string, ring finger) E (2nd fret, 4th string, long finger) F (1st fret, 6th string, index finger) Bb (3rd fret, 3rd string, ring finger) E (2nd fret, 4th string, long finger) C (1st fret, 2nd string, index finger) Bb (3rd fret, 3rd string, ring finger) G# (4th fret, 1st string, pinky) D (3rd fret, 2nd string, ring finger) A (2nd fret, 3rd string, long finger) D (3rd fret, 2nd string, ring finger) D# (1st fret, 4th string, index finger) It seems like a random order, but I could be wrong. Does anyone else find some sort of pattern?
Your pinky looks like it has 4 joints, but great tutorial. These are exercises that are very beneficial. I would also add to stick on one fret with index finger, then tap alternatly with your 3rd and 4th finger, on the respective frets until it burns. After you do this for 15 minutes, once a day, you'll find yourself playing eruption like mister Halen.
This is real good and hard.I fought in the war got out married raised 4 kids worked 2 jobs.Hard jobs.Took care of my wife.Built our home with my hands board by board painted it kept it up for years repaired it.Sent my kids to collage. Then my wife cheated on me and left.2 years went by then she begged me to come back.I said no.This guitar lesson is harder than all that.
This is great if I knew what fingers she was using. She says 1, 3 and 4 but never explains which fingers she is pressing down with. I am a beginner and didn't understand at all what she was doing other than flying away with the fingers. I couldn't notice how far she lifted because I didn't know what fingers to look at. I need to find some help for beginners I guess...
Watch other vids too i try to accrue knowledge of this from lots of sources because i like to see what is consistent in the videos and litlle helpful hints theymaythroewinthereandeveryonehastheirownwayofteeching. :)
There seem to be a lot of comments along the lines of "but I can't see which notes she is playing", "is there any Tab?", "camera angle is so bad I can't see what's happening" Well, congratulations, you completely missed the point of the tutorial. The idea is to keep your fingertips a close to the strings possible, at all times. Which notes is she playing? It doesn't matter - it is NOT a pattern exercise !!! During the exercise you play ANY note on ANY string that isn't the one you just played - that's it !!!
i can stretch my fingers on fret board from 2 to 7th fret,, what i mean is that when my first finger is on 2md fret my pinky stretches to 7th fret and the notes sound perfect what does that mean i have small fingers or what?
This technique is great, but after prolonged time it can damage your tendons. It is best ( in my opinion) if the wrist and arm stay as straight as possible. This puts much less strain on your delicicate tendons.
It depends. If you have a guitar with a thick fret board, then you need to just practce. And, while you practice just try and keep your wrist as straight as possible. (avoid major bends in the wrist.)
rent a shill it’s random... just use the correct finger on the correct fret...... moving up and down onto different strings.. fingers 1234 on fret 1234 respectively...the exercise calls for no fly away.......... Index is 1..... middle is 2... ring finger is ...3 little finger/ pinky is 4......... fret 1 starts at the head.. furthest away from guitar body..good luck..🌸
This looks and feels like it’s putting an awful strain on the wrist. Would it be better to bring the guitar neck up much higher so your wrist is not at such a harsh angle?
if you are playing classical guitar you always lift the neck high enough that the headstock is approximately the same height with your head. this position is the "best" position for guitar playing as it is easier on the hand and requires less work moving around the neck. playing typical acoustic your neck is at a right angle with your body. I guess she put the neck that low so she can video the guitar without showing her face?
This in fact isn't that important unless you are playing something fast. In my personal experience i get more feeling in to it. Just make sure no to flip them all the way off, and almost 99% of the time don't move your fingers off when you put a new finger on the next fret. This should be quite obvious and it doesn't need any practice, it comes naturally as it becomes harder to play. You will most likely find this technique and use it your way on the road to becoming a great guitarist.
This was somewhat confusing and not clearly demonstrated. It would also help a lot not to cut the top of the picture so you can't a clean look at what her fingers are doing. Not that helpful.
rest in peace i hope she knows that she's still helping people years later ):
Is she dead?
what ?
What the fuck how do you know she’s dead dude
@@slowlynow9 it says that on her website, she died in 2013 :(
I just went to her website and there was this announcement that she passed away on 2013. A great loss for the musical world. I missed her already.
Sir Tristen :(
how sad!
Rip :(
@Sir Tristen Sometimes the suffering is unbearable. May she rest in peace.
RIP
RIP. I think it is great that she lives on to continue helping guitarists with her videos and website.

fly away keeps you from string squeak

The Spider is random on purpose, just keep finger
in the same fret on alternating strings, keeping
the pattern random is much more challenging
Thank you for this amazing video.
A simple yet very useful exercise =]
Wow Susan I wish you were my teacher this is the BEST explanation on how to correctly do the spider exercise! I am surprised that none of the guitar lesson books even mention these things?

Wow. the "fly away" is something I've always overlooked. Thanks, this exercise was helpful.
Great exercise, thank you!
Splendid presentation of fine technique!
BTW... your hands are beautiful.
Great excercise. Thank you.

Very helpful technique, thank you
Thank you for the help.....That guitar looks like a couple of mine....Conn? Great guitar...
Great lesson thanks!
so nice....❤🎉
That's great tutorial.
Awesome...Thanks.

Thanks , you are right it's going to take some time to get good at it, take care
Thanks for the tutorial!
Superb
Brilliant! this is what I need to get faster. Thank so much! :)
Thank you for this lesson!

Mea Dish No, no pattern at all.
No, no pattern at all.
No, no pattern at all.
Thanks for this vid man! super helpful!
The view perspective is REALLY tough to completely underwtand .... GREAT video though ... Love it!
Great
Very help ful
What is the pattern, please? Where is each finger going? Thanks.
thanks! i learned something new today. would probably take me several years. lol

Heard My wrist snap and crack a few times is that bad? Anyone know of any good finger extending Docs.? Maybe a weekend project in My garage.
Never thought about this problem!
i thought you said
''hi im susan frusciante''
i nearly pissed my pants and was like johns mom is that you??
Nice voice, comfortable talking speed and experienced.
I cant believe she has passed away :(
Yeah, March 4th 2013. The purported cause was suicide, which makes it doubly saddening.
***** I agree. She was clearly good at what she did. :/
I have played a long time, my little finger still does the flyaway thing, jeez, how to keep them all close to the guitar neck?
I dont understand which note you play when doing the spider its seems like you just pick them randomly
can you say what notes?
Great stuff... just realize that not only do I have a "fly away" finger, but its more like a "a whole flock away!" ;-P
huge issue for me. ive been looking for a long time for an exercise to adress this problem. just lucked out finding this
Thank u

Unreal vascularity on the hand :O

Thanks... I actually did search around and watch others as well.
you can figure out yourself by ear, but you obviosly can't xD
transcribing comes with experience silly.
Teodora Jajic Well aren't you the cats ass. He said he is a beginner.
thanku mam i am Indian i want learn so help me please
There seem to be a lot of comments along the lines of "but I can't see which notes she is playing", "is there any Tab?", "camera angle is so bad I can't see what's happening"

yup, means your fingers are tiny..but don't give up lol
which guitar is it ?
It just looks like a Classical Guitar with nylon strings mate.
Looks like a Valencia classical guitar. I have one and it looks pretty much exactly like it.
What kind of guitar is that? Just curious. It looks like you have more space between the strings on your guitar than I have on mine haha.
It's a classical guitar
It's a Yamaha C45...u should know that...it's one of kind classic GuitaR...(=^.^=)....
if I can just add one thing, don't over do it if you are a beginner. real guitar playing has been known to cause injuries.
Very sad loss. RIP.
This technique is great, but after prolonged time it can damage your tendons. It is best ( in my opinion) if the wrist and arm stay as straight as possible. This puts much less strain on your delicicate tendons.
Zaya Armijo How do you hit the low E then?
It depends. If you have a guitar with a thick fret board, then you need to just practce. And, while you practice just try and keep your wrist as straight as possible. (avoid major bends in the wrist.)
Zaya Armijo My fingers can't reach the low E string without muting the high E and padding the low E (resulting in muting the A).
my gf hates spiders and doesn't like me playing this when she's in the house. What other exercises can I play?
You can get the same benefit from scales
Tom Debevoise can't, my gf uses them all the time to weigh butter and stuff
Humor, Ha
+Tom Debevoise Maybe this is a better excersice than scales for picking hand.
You should switch to push ups
Can someone please tab out what she's doing. I'm clueless
rent a shill it’s random... just use the correct finger on the correct fret...... moving up and down onto different strings.. fingers 1234 on fret 1234 respectively...the exercise calls for no fly away..........

I know what you are trying to get me to achieve but the fingering in last half of the video is not very clear!
Sip , 👍 suka,

My condolences as I read the next post.
Harder than it looks....and easy to get discouraged! I'll keep at it.

I guess she put the neck that low so she can video the guitar without showing her face?
Could not follow where your fingers went, as you moved across neck for the 2nd exercise.
i like those hands ^_^
aaaaahh my fingers really hate this exercise lol. much to practice
thats cramping my muscless to control not to fly away.
There is a spider .. a spider... a spider... it's deep in my soul...soul...soul...
Now u need to do a vid on two hand tap
ihahaaa i fly away so badly... birds wonder what the hell im doing up here :D awesome vid..
omg i just read comments.. RIP..
I don't fly away too badly, but that kind of control makes my hand cramp - just watching!!
i'm gonna cry
I have no control over my pinky :(
I don't either, even if I try to force it it still lifts up.
cut it off..
play power chords with your pinky to make it stronger. Then it will come naturally
hello
hey
When you said "the spider", I thought it was "the spider" from Scott Tennant's Pumping nylon.
This in fact isn't that important unless you are playing something fast. In my personal experience i get more feeling in to it. Just make sure no to flip them all the way off, and almost 99% of the time don't move your fingers off when you put a new finger on the next fret. Sounds like a spider too! :) lol
what if your already a guitar god like me?
My pinky keeps flying away.
This was somewhat confusing and not clearly demonstrated. It would also help a lot not to cut the top of the picture so you can't a clean look at what her fingers are doing. Not that helpful.
became a damn fan of yours...do me a favour ..Make me yo deciple. I would love to be the one
Ya can't see what your doing, Are you hitting notes randomly within the four frets? It doesn't look uniformed.
Yep :-)
this video could easily be done in 1 or 2 min max
RIP
